Re:Why Blogging Platforms Suck
on Monday December 11, 2023 @09:23AM (#38600873)
Friendly reminder that in 2023 ~90% of consumer internet traffic is done on a mobile device. Us power users and people pretending to work in their cubicles use desktops a ton (though both groups also use their smartphones extensively). Best practice is to design for mobile-first, especially if you're trying to optimize for search. Google now indexes with mobile usability priority, too.
ETA: That said, it works pretty well on mobile for me. Not sure if you made any changes in the last 3 hours (:

The new Discord mobile layout is even worse than the new Webflow designer layout.
Kinda looks like it's the original launch version of Instagram but sharing only with friends (approved followers) instead of publicly. Combined with that app from like 13 years ago where you could have your photos printed into postcards and sent to people... dang what was that called? That's a throwback.
Re:Ask HN: Does Email Open Rate not matter?
on Friday December 08, 2023 @09:32AM (#38569458)
Open rates for tracked marketing/sales emails are almost always determined by an image with a unique URL being loaded in an HTML email. So if you load remote content, it'll register as an open even if read receipts are blocked.
Re:Ask HN: Does Email Open Rate not matter?
on Friday December 08, 2023 @09:30AM (#38569439)
Not only that, but if your recipient has an iPhone and uses the Mail app (and a few other platforms now), the images are all loaded on Apple (or other) servers first as part of a privacy and safety process, registering as an Open. So it's even harder to tell if people are actually opening the emails or not.

I was like 12 when I got my first paycheck and probably bought Pokémon cards (which I still have) but no clue, really... 20 years later when I received my first payout from a company I co-founded, I bought a bottle of Hibiki 21... does that count?

Now take that data and use it to power a co-founder matchmaking network, rather than it just being between two people!

Re:Reddit can survive without search: company reportedly threatens to ...
on Monday November 06, 2023 @10:46AM (#38164107)
Reddit's on-site search is so incredibly awful. It's impossible to find anything even remotely like what you're looking for. If they de-index or go behind a paywall or something, it will become useless.
