So they buy up the machines, likely create supply issues (add waiting time etc.), then rent them out at premium?

People are outraged landlords doing that with housing.

Yet someone such rent seeking behaviour is acceptable?

Get fucked.

Re:GPT-Rosalind-6 System Card Addendum on Monday November 02, 2026 @11:51AM (#50339675)
Probably AI came up with the naming scheme ;-P Maybe they used Gemini for that or copilot.
Re:We Took over ChatGPT Accounts on Saturday October 31, 2026 @01:27PM (#50318107)
That incentive works both ways. For instance employee sneaking in a security hole and then selling it to a mate so they can collect the bounty.
Re:We Took over ChatGPT Accounts on Saturday October 31, 2026 @10:12AM (#50316397)
Should be given $5-10million under NDA. No headlines.
Re:We Took over ChatGPT Accounts on Saturday October 31, 2026 @10:12AM (#50316394)
Indeed, it's like "here peasant, have this fortune of $5,000, may it change your life". Pathetic.
Re:Show HN: A working Nintendo in ~1GB of Qwen weights on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:31PM (#50307274)
Isn't that the same with e.g. human brain? Computer program can compute billions of equations, whilst human will struggle with just one.
Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:48PM (#50278964)
Imgur is not available in the UK due to censorship.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:48PM (#50277821)
Here they offer no finance for over £5k. Crap.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:44PM (#50277746)
I bought a laptop for a relative and didn't realise it doesn't have touchscreen. They complained for a day and I often saw them try to touch the screen and then being disappointed it doesn't work. Week later they never mentioned it again and use the laptop just fine.

When I was buying them a second one and asked about touchscreen, they said they don't care anymore for it, so second laptop also was without touchscreen.

Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:31PM (#50277431)
I like how I can see its screen quality on my screen.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:37PM (#50264605)
It's not justifying an upgrade. Shame there are no finance options for M5 Max 128GB.
Re:Genie 4 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:47PM (#50261942)
What is this for? I cannot understand these models. They are very much polluting the internet with nonsense and use capacity that people and businesses need for actual work.

If these are the cause of why I have to pay 2-4x I used to for a computer, then Google should go fuck themselves.

Re:SIMD-accelerated computer vision on a $2 microcontroller on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:25PM (#50250415)
Because these are normal instructions.

If you do multiplication using mul instead of loop and add, is it acceleration too?

Re:SIMD-accelerated computer vision on a $2 microcontroller on Monday October 26, 2026 @02:14PM (#50248359)
Why is it still called SIMD-accelerated, if these are now just normal instructions. You just have to take a little bit more effort into restructuring your algorithms to make use of them.
Well, if we didn't have corrupt regulators, Google would have been fined out of existence ages ago.

That said it will be interesting way of exploitation. If you want to find people who have certain email content, you can serve them ads manipulating them into taking an action. Like buying a scam product / malware.

Re:Show HN: Run full iOS 16.5 firmware on Android Devices on Thursday October 22, 2026 @06:37PM (#50202065)
They could implement Grapple Store and then clone most popular apps.
Re:PHP2Shell: AI uncovers critical RCE in PHP on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @01:02PM (#50184197)
They guess the next token based on probability which is derived from training data.
Re:PHP2Shell: AI uncovers critical RCE in PHP on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @11:32AM (#50182736)
Many exploits are used by security services, so this gives time to wrap any investigations or surveillance or find another method of accessing target servers.
Re:PHP2Shell: AI uncovers critical RCE in PHP on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @11:31AM (#50182723)
If AI "uncovered" it, that means it was already in the training data and likely exploited in the wild.
Re:PHP 8.2.35 on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @11:30AM (#50182695)
Why they can't publish an expoit so people can run it against their own servers to check the impact?
I think people in the West have little experience living under totalitarian regime.

Typical ways of overcoming censorship is creating own lingo, so that it goes past censors or distribution of physical leaflets, underground press and organising resistance offline.

Thank you!
Re:Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @02:27PM (#50170572)
That reminds me of hotmail's 50GB limit that cannot be changed. This created so much pain for some non-technical people I know (missed important emails, then having to spend days deliberating what to delete etc)
Re:Voxtral 3 on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @02:19PM (#50170436)
How can I download the model to try or am I misunderstanding something?
Re:Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @12:07PM (#50168472)
Probably simplest solution is to keep current behaviour and get a second iPad for notes.
Re:MiniMax M3.1 Flash on Monday October 19, 2026 @02:34PM (#50156115)
The comparisons with models like GPT-5.6 or Opus are pointless because they vary substantially. They are often nerfed shortly after release and then performance is not consistent. One day model will be doing relatively fine, another it will be dumb as markov generator. In that regard self hosted models are better, because you know what is running your requests.
> In that context, I no longer feel inspired to contribute to a commons that’s being strip-mined by massive corporations

Open-source was always strip-mined by massive corporations. It was main source of free labour for decades.

Unfortunately there are always people willing to subsidise these corporations with their time for a badge of "honour" and few pats on the back.

Great to see more people awaken to the fact corporations thrive on unpaid work whilst making billions for their shareholders.

I am yet to see this trickle down wink

Re:Source code of the Estonian online voting system on Saturday October 17, 2026 @04:35PM (#50134888)
> The public needs to believe it, and hypertechnical solutions are a hard sell.

Public doesn't need to know the details. Production of paper, printers is quite complex and so production of the pen. Yet people are not concerned about that when voting and we don't publish schematics of a printer that printed the ballots.

> Please note that even on fast computers this program struggles to simulate the C64 hardware at real speed. A real C64 is simulated at 31% of its speed on an Apple M3 Max, 39% on an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 (Gorgon Halo), and 48% on an Apple M5 Max

Key takeaway is why FPGA is still useful. Even modern CPUs can't handle certain seemingly simple data processing tasks in realtime.

Re:DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:11AM (#50131344)
Remember when we were dumbfounded why our service is slow despite having implemented quite robust caching mechanism. Turns out simply the flag that enables it was hardcoded to false. So it was minor update (changed flag to true), but provided substantial speed up.
