Hi, when will you take orders from EU to EU and what's the smallest batch size? Single prototype board or more?

Nice, I have sth similar on my wiki, namely random binary string overlaying the page with the text "If you can read this text (opacity=0.41) if means the page has not been edited for a long time. Consequently the information it holds might be deprecated or no longer represent the opinion of this author." to clarify.

So far the closest I've seen is the #dev-chat on the Steam Frame Discord server https://discord.com/channels/1438213354618617908/15540532718... but it's mostly about software dev for, not productivity, including software dev in general, more broadly.

I'm not questioning what they invented, I'm highlighting their business model, how they actually make money.

Total or Shell use a lot of state of the art technology to mine, they are still oil companies.

I do care still, there are dozens of us, dozens!
Neat, would also make for a nice Zim (offline Wikipedia and other websites) plugin/view.
They definitely exist and I'm actually quite convinced they are valuable... but it's a bit like calling Google a technology company because they sell millions Pixel phones and billions in GCP while >90% of their revenue is still advertisement (please don't quote me on the numbers they are surely incorrect, it's to illustrate the idea).

I'm making a provocative shortcut.

McKinsey does not offer actual strategical advice, they offer scapegoats and insurance that when shits does hit the fan, the client will not be the one sent to prison.

The glossy magazines read by C-suite is the slick marketing part, not the actual product.

I suggest you present a SplinterCon in Stockholm in December. It is, very sadly, an important situation to explain.

want to join a productivity on Frame Discord or Matrix channel to discuss more what's been tried and identify where the gaps still are?
Re:Way to Play Super Mario 64: On Apple Vision Pro on Thursday October 22, 2026 @11:27AM (#50196744)
Yes, a lot of versions but not all unfortunately, see e.g. https://github.com/Lumince/singularity with for Q3 52433670036000520 as latest vulnerable firmware.

I posted https://video.benetou.fr/w/wUfpqnvEoe7sfQvu8BAyph and https://video.benetou.fr/w/6KbGB7YY4oqkjPH4HJYUab just yesterday so... yes ;)

Suggestions and ideas welcomed.

FWIW on pairing keyboard I also tinkered with https://mastodon.pirateparty.be/@utopiah/117178674206706009 specifically for this setup.

Depends on your needs obviously :

- cheap Android that can potentially be rooted : Quest 3

- deep into the Apple ecosystem and not a hardcore gamer : Vision Pro

- gamer and Linux tinkerer or just want an open device : Steam Frame

The upcoming Meta headset is also quite nice possibly for remote work but again it's Android and from Meta.

It's a plutocracy. Maybe it wasn't obvious until now but the current administration is quite clear about when one is invited to buy a dinner with the commander-in-chief by donating to his crypto coin.

> bit nervous about putting it out there before I'm sure that ...

At the risk of being presumptuous I believe that's the wrong way of looking at it. The point isn't to show the entire World that everything you did is perfect (because it's not, for anyone) but rather to grow from potential collaborations, even if only just discussions in issues. It is a humbling process to show how something was built but with a positive crowd it is definitely leading to growth!

Re:Show HN: A working 3D model of an Enigma machine on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:52AM (#49905779)
Neat, would be great to have it in WebXR with hand tracking, imagining 2 modes :

- AR where the machine can be put on your desk, next to documents

- VR where the machine is in context, e.g. a 3D model of German Naval Signals HQ in Guernsey, eventually stepping back to a broader context.

I think it's true but only in equitable societies.

Putin or Trump are totally isolated from economical and political consequences so they have no problem severing ties. If there are genuine co-dependencies, including for the leaders, they it's much harder to break peace.

I imagine the ideological aspect is the deeper motivation but it only matters with the right circumstances.

Re:MicroLLM Lab – Try 7 tiny LLM's in the browser on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @02:23AM (#49888993)
Firefox on Linux doesn't support WebGPU https://caniuse.com/webgpu should enable via a flag.

Adding a warning about it could help.

I'd check https://github.com/Josh-writes/microslate-firmware/ for the xteink as it is less focused on only reading, but keep in mind it's a screen only, so not touch. Buttons though are pretty good so enough for tick items on a list IMHO.

Please check out my page on the topic https://fabien.benetou.fr/Content/SwappingPartsOfTheRestrict... and let me know if I could improve it somehow to help you.

Overall though my recommendation is :

- do what you can TODAY no matter how small

That means if the OS is too big a of a step, start with an application. If the hardware is too locked down, start with data so that next time you buy hardware, you will bring over that data then switch. Don't postpone.

Re:Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests on Monday September 28, 2026 @04:02AM (#49874923)
> decoupling your services from cloud providers

doesn't it boil down to not using unique services?

If nobody provides an alternative today that could switch as quickly as changing an endpoint and token then you are coupled.

It's not a technical decision as much admitting in the strategy that we are cutting corners because it's cheaper/faster today but some hypothetical day in the future when we'll magically have more resource we won't?

Re:When did Google get so f-ing weird? on Monday September 28, 2026 @03:56AM (#49874886)
If you are serious about the topic check out "Artificial Intimacy: Who We Become When We Talk to Machines" by Sherry Turkle coming out tomorrow.

It's not about NVIDIA stock, it's not about your latest harness, it's not about code review on generated code, instead it's about what happens to us when something not human fakes being human and the dangers of it.

I only started reading it but if it's as fundamental as her previous "Reclaiming conversation" then I expect it to change my life for the better, even if it means fighting against the dangerous behavior of the majority of people around me.

An AI is not a person and when you elevate it to that status you lower yourself. It is very dangerous, even more so when it's done, like mobile phone and engagement more broadly before, for profit.

Protect yourself and those around you, regardless of how you like or dislike AI, and trust actual humans specializing in studying human behavior, not psychopaths craving billions.

Tetris: The Games People Play 2016 graphic novel by Box Brown is pretty good too.
Re:Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free on Saturday September 26, 2026 @08:16AM (#49855812)
That's because you the user are not the customer of Google and such services. You are actually the product being sold to the customer, namely advertising companies, by Google.

The farmer take care of his pigs but only to the point they get slaughtered.

> Maybe the model is just getting better, and maybe I'm being less careful while under pressure to ship more and more often. But model capability is obviously growing.

If you are a normal person research (e.g. https://arxiv.org/html/2606.22721v1 but there are a lot more, not necessarily on coding) has shown that you indeed are being less careful. It most likely also works better simply because more resources are being poured in.

Re:What even is an OS now? on Saturday September 26, 2026 @05:45AM (#49854899)
I feel like most articles challenging OSes have no idea what an OS is.

Sure question what the latest tool can offer and how to integrate with it... but that's just being an app, or a window manager, or a package manager, or a distribution, that's not challenging what the OS itself is and does.

If your OS doesn't change how a computer allocates resources, then you are talking about higher level, and that can be super valuable too, arguably more valuable, but ... that's a different thing.

PS: also chroot (half a century, just checked for the fun of it), jails, containers, VMs, etc limiting how the allocation can be done do exist and have been used for decades already.

Re:Yes, Claude can do nine loops on Friday September 25, 2026 @03:27PM (#49848839)
I'm an AI skeptic, or even anti-AI, and even I would have a hard time to admit it hasn't gotten any better.

In fact I will even admit it, yes AI has gotten better... but also how could it NOT? It has literally all the resources it can has, namely attention from everyone, everybody talks about it, a lot of workers, from state of the art researchers to annotators, all the material resources, from dedicated chips to networking to water to electricity, the entire available dataset of Human written and said thoughts, literally everything published and thus categorized.

AI literally has everything humanity can provide, it better be "better".
