Same with me - late 90s. Celeron 366Mz, 64 MB RAM, 4.3 GB HDD. Don't remember the video card and the sound card. Used to stay up all night to try and fix X11. And once you got it running - victory !!!

Yay!!! There are people like me in this world. :-)
Re:There's no reason for software to be slow anymore on Saturday August 22, 2026 @04:48AM (#49397861)
With RAM becoming expensive, developers will have no choice but to make memory efficient software.
I never stopped using Firefox.
Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2026) on Monday April 13, 2026 @12:41PM (#47754655)
I have used mostly gemini (antigravity). I do one feature at a time. If antigravity says I have run out of tokens then I come back 24 hours later. :-)

I have been prompting and building a pos[1] for fun. I have been improving it bit by bit. I will also admit that I have not looked at the code that AI tools have generated. I let AI test it and the AI also finds bugs and fixes it.

Its a fun project, all done using free tier.

Re:No, it doesn't cost Anthropic $5k per Claude Code user on Tuesday March 10, 2026 @01:07AM (#47319269)
I wonder how they are defining a power user. How many tokens, what could be the size the code base?
Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (March 2026) on Monday March 09, 2026 @06:00AM (#47306937)
Building a boring POS (1) using various AI tools just to check what can I do with these tools. I have used claude, gemini and now using antigravity. I have not done a single edit manually.

I got it all done in probably an hour or two. But done in 10-15 min blocks over many days.

Re:Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft on Monday February 02, 2026 @08:15AM (#46855676)
You won't regret. I have been using debian for last 25 years on and off and for last 8 years non stop. I have no complains.

Re:Ask HN: Any example of successful vibe-coded product? on Tuesday December 30, 2025 @11:10PM (#46441174)
I have built a POS for restaurants. 100% vibe coded.
Re:KDE is now my favorite desktop on Friday September 19, 2025 @12:31AM (#45297964)
Don't think so. The issue is probably with drivers. The crash does not happen when software rendering is used.
Re:KDE is now my favorite desktop on Thursday September 18, 2025 @01:46PM (#45292686)
I was using KDE, but with Debian 13 upgrade kwin crashes with every alt-tab. Had to switch to cinnamon.

I run Ryzen 3200G.

I do a mix of architecture, solution design and probably 15-20 hours of coding in a week. Nowadays, experimenting with elixir/phoenix.
I am all for complete and absolute ban on plastic bags.

Re:TikTok is scary good. It's digital crack on Sunday March 27, 2022 @12:08AM (#30817626)
I loved this app. But its banned now in India. I really loved the creativity shown by simple average people, sometimes these people were really poor. And their creativity blew away a lot of so called actors, celebs etc.

I my eyes it was a game changer.

Re:Winning Wordle on Tuesday March 01, 2022 @09:36PM (#30522979)
There are probably hundreds of writeups on strategies to play Wordle. I play it for fun and I play it random. My first word is whatever comes to mind. I know I can increase my chances by selecting a word with more vowels in it but where is the fun in it. :-)

I once got it on second word - it was pure chance. I am now waiting for the day when I get it on the first attempt. :-)

Re:Namecheap: Russia Service Termination on Monday February 28, 2022 @11:55PM (#30509798)
I don't think I can agree with this as a customer. I mean did namecheap block customer from US (because of Iraq/Afghanistan etc etc), France (Africa) and other countries?

This is just cheap.

What if FB came up with this response based on the data from German and French users?
I am not sure what type of companies you have worked with. But I have never seen this happening.

There are times when a client selected person is not taken in but the reason has never been what you have described.

Please do not generalise.

Re:How to Hack APIs in 2021 on Tuesday August 10, 2021 @07:07AM (#28127308)
I suspected that too, but I do not know enough about these reactive frameworks to be 100% sure. But as a user of such apps, it is absolutely frustrating.
Re:How to Hack APIs in 2021 on Tuesday August 10, 2021 @06:54AM (#28127229)
I agree and I hate two things about SPAs.

- Works terrible in bad networks.

- And the thing I hate the most is the shifting of images, links when the page is still loading. But this may be a implementation issue.

Re:How to Hack APIs in 2021 on Tuesday August 10, 2021 @06:51AM (#28127214)
I also always have the same tick at the back of my head. I have put off learning/playing around with all SPA technologies because of this.

To me it looks like we are increasing the surface area for a attack - again this is a hunch, a kind of smell test.

But I also see that react etc are running away with all job offers.

Completely with you on 3. This is the most dangerous one - its like not wanting to hear bad news or give bad news. I have found myself doing this with health issues.

1 and 2 can be helped with a bit of discipline and perseverance.

Re:Disasters I've seen in a microservices world on Sunday June 13, 2021 @02:16PM (#27494879)
> In your situation it seems like a non-technical person in charge of technical decisions. Those decisions are by definition poor quality.

The client is to blame. The client let go of all the people who knew the technical side of the product and has hired an architect to re-architect everything. And the client is in a hurry.

Re:Disasters I've seen in a microservices world on Sunday June 13, 2021 @11:35AM (#27493441)
> Why is it so hard for most to resist this hype nonsense wave when its oncoming and it's so hard to resist the anti-hype wave that inevitably follows it?

Because then how will one do career development? We are building now for a client and the client wants it, I can feel it in my bones that what we are building is far more complex and will be difficult to maintain. I am no expert in microservices but this hunch is just coming from common sense.

Re:Can I Email? on Tuesday May 11, 2021 @09:23AM (#27117769)
I could not even understand what the site did. :-(
This is crazy impressive. How many hours did it take?
Absolutely. This is true for any professional service business not only limited to the elite. If you work for a company that works for a client then you are basically working two jobs.
