Re:Fingerprints Are the New Cookies on Sunday October 11, 2026 @11:36PM (#50051086)
These tests aren't reliable - Brave does randomise values but it ultimately doesn't do much to prevent fingerprinting, as many values remain static. For example, Brave still exposes your GPU model and driver version.

See Fingerprint.com, despite Brave's protections you'll likely find it works reliably.

I'll preface by saying you'd be entirely reasonable in not finding this sufficiently reassuring, but compare the standard terms: https://cdn.deepseek.com/policies/en-US/deepseek-terms-of-us...

To the open platform terms (i.e. for API use): https://cdn.deepseek.com/policies/en-US/deepseek-open-platfo...

The standard terms includes clause 4.3 which grants them the right to retain inputs and outputs for training purposes, and this is missing from their API terms. The standard terms also cover the right to opt out (which you can do from your user settings). No such opt-out exists on the API because it isn't applicable.

This isn't true at least on the API. If you read their privacy policy you'll see the training clause is scoped specifically to the consumer terms i.e. for the chat product. No such clause exists for the API service, and it would absolutely be required under Chinese law if it was taking place.

Contrary to popular belief, DeepSeek really aren't interested in your prompts.

Re:GLM-5.1: Towards Long-Horizon Tasks on Tuesday April 07, 2026 @01:38PM (#47678730)
I'm on their pro plan and I respectfully disagree - it's genuinely excellent with GLM 5.1 so long as you remember to /compact once it hits around 100k tokens. At that point it's pretty much broken and entirely unusable, but if you keep context under about 100k it's genuinely on par with Opus for me, and in some ways it's arguably better.
I don't disagree but then don't announce it.

The issue isn't that they don't have these features, the issue is that they announced them in such a way that suggested they were right around the corner, or even that they'd be available on the new iPhone 16, and now it seems increasingly likely that the phone will never have the advertised features.

Entirely anecdotal but in my experience amalgam fillings do seem to hold up much, much better than white ones.
Indeed. My response to this has largely been "if this passes I'll just block traffic from the UK to my website" as it'd be cheaper than implementing this utter madness.
Re:Clap: The New Audio Plug-In Standard on Thursday June 16, 2022 @05:30AM (#31764048)
Indeed, REAPER is surprisingly prominent in video game audio.
Thing is even if you're not using Russian gas directly, prices are still going to be influenced by the global gas market (and the wider global economy in general).
Re:Moving a macOS window by clicking anywhere on it on Thursday May 05, 2022 @12:36PM (#31275523)
I suspect as of Big Sur that Apple were intending to release touchscreen Macs, but the changes to the OS in future versions makes me suspect that they then changed their mind.
Indeed. As someone in their 20s one of my regrets, genuinely, is that when I was younger I didn't just spend more time playing video games rather than doomscrolling...
Indeed but I think again information does have a role to play here. Back then everyone around you was going through the same shit and you learned to deal with it.

Now you have social media giving a constant reminder that you're not good enough and that you need to achieve more.

Conversely I do agree that there is a bit of a "learned helplessness" that I've noticed is a bit more prevalent in the younger generations, and I can't work out if that's a symptom or a cause.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I'm happily using Windows now but used a Mac before and it took a long time for me to realise that my complaints about Windows largely boiled down to "it doesn't do things in the way that I'm used to".

With that said, whilst I do like macOS overall I always found it infuriating how on macOS applications could steal focus. Something I do appreciate on Windows is that focus stealing by and large isn't a thing.

Re:Job hunting while day-jobbing (2021) on Thursday April 14, 2022 @07:23AM (#31025419)
I mean, I agree, but to be fair I had a positive experience once by letting my employer know when I had already started interviewing elsewhere (really just giving them a heads up that I was planning on leaving within the next 6 months) and to my surprise they were more than happy to match the salary and make changes (for example going fully remote) to accomodate me. I'm still there nearly 3 years later.

Really depends on the employer and on how much they want to keep you and how willing you are to stay there.

Re:An Account of the Shanghai Lockdown on Saturday April 09, 2022 @11:29AM (#30968872)
In short, because the vaccines available in China, as it turns out, aren't all that effective at all, and the Chinese government desperately needs to save face now.
Re:The hunt for the M1’s neural engine on Wednesday March 30, 2022 @01:30PM (#30858242)
Which implies that, at least theoretically, that Apple could enable the other neural engine at a later date (not that they would).
It really reminds me of that interview with Steve Jobs from the 90s where you can tell just how frustrated he is at Microsoft's success with what he describes as really "third-rate" software.
Re:Apple M1 Ultra on Tuesday March 08, 2022 @05:04PM (#30607804)
Not to mention if you build your own PC you can upgrade the parts as and when, unlike with the new Mac where you'll eventually just be replacing the whole thing.
Oh absolutely, but what I have noticed as well is that companies in lower wage countries have started charging more as well as there's now more demand for outsourced workers.
My company is fully remote, and whilst I'd agree that it's certainly doable to onboard people remotely (we've absolutely done this successfully), I would also say it really depends on the types of people and I suspect possibly the roles as well.
Indeed. Not to mention if you're at one of the bigger companies then you're more likely to change teams than leave the company entirely.
To be fair though I think there's a happy medium. For a while I really loved Apple's approach of just not giving a damn about backwards compatibility but I have to say using Windows did make me realise just how wonderful it is not worrying about whether the software I want to use will work.
Re:Pedestrian deaths spike in U.S. as reckless driving surges on Monday February 14, 2022 @07:50AM (#30331387)
To be fair I think the problem isn't just the people but how the roads and infrastructure is designed in the US. It's very anti-pedestrian.
To play devil's advocate, I actually suspect the reason Apple were planning to implement this was because they were intending to start using E2E encryption on iCloud photos, but to keep various governments off their back figured they could placate them by implementing this scanning.
Re:KDE: A Nice Tiling Environment and a Surprisingly Awesome DE on Tuesday February 08, 2022 @04:57AM (#30256610)
Indeed. I switched from macOS to Windows about a year ago now and I have to say I really appreciate how on Windows stealing focus is much, much more rare than it was on macOS.

I honestly found it infuriating on my Mac.

Indeed. I'm a web developer and my tools genuinely work better just under native Linux than they ever could with WSL etc.
Re:How did LastPass master passwords get compromised? on Thursday December 30, 2021 @12:40PM (#29738927)
Sums up my feelings really. I genuinely think that what they're saying is probably true, that these emails were sent in error (and I have to say I don't envy their teams at all in having to deal with the fallout from this), but it's also entirely understandable that many people will have been justifiably spooked to the point where they probably won't continue to use their services now.
Re:From Node to Ruby on Rails on Thursday December 16, 2021 @09:22AM (#29578366)
No doubt it's very popular still - I see it used every day. Just most of the people using it are busy using it and it's not the new hotness that warrants constant new discussion.
Re:Better.com CEO fires 900 employees on Zoom call on Monday December 06, 2021 @11:33AM (#29461830)
Indeed. I don't think the company should be slammed for this but his delivery was really poor here.
Re:Wikipedia is loaded, so why’s it asking for donations? on Wednesday December 01, 2021 @07:12AM (#29402964)
Not OP and don't have an example to hand, but something I noticed is that with subjects where I understand them well I do tend to notice a bit of a bias, but equally edits are usually accepted too.

The problem in my mind is that on subjects where I'm not as well educated I may well not notice the bias because I don't know what may or may not be disputed for a given subject matter.

Obviously everything on Wikipedia should be sourced but it's entirely possible to be selective of which sources you use.
