Also very impressive (and delivered with great humor)

I still have the circuit diagram (paper copy) that shipped with my Acorn Atom in, ahem, 1981. Didn’t ask for it!

(Edit: with the help of the circuit diagram we did make a simple mod to one of the output ports of the device)

Ouch! Horribly wrong on https://www.agedfish.com/blog/meiwaku-and-the-brompton-bell....

Maybe the Star Wars reference threw it.

Echoing @ivvve. Keep it up and thanks for sharing.
Re:Show HN: Contact Form Delivery on Sunday October 23, 2022 @04:33AM (#33305479)
I happened to need exactly this and was putting off coding it up myself. Signed up and was testing a live set-up within minutes. Very nice!
Re:Some New HTTP Verbs on Tuesday September 13, 2022 @09:01AM (#32823691)
Not quite useless. POST tells the server to check for a body which I think is a reasonable indication of intent. But otherwise, yes, it’s all arbitrary and just vague hints to the server program as to what you might possibly be thinking of doing…
Re:Apple Announces iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus on Thursday September 08, 2022 @06:39AM (#32763705)
Can verify this having been woken up more than once by a -very- attention getting earthquake alarm on my or my employer’s iPhone. A contender for Most Shock and Awe in a single notification.
Re:The Cluetrain Manifesto (1999) on Thursday August 11, 2022 @05:19AM (#32423307)
Still got my copy somewhere; will dig it out and re-read, though I suspect with some disappointment and sadness.
I’ve undertaken information security training in a number of Japanese companies. They all had what I thought was a disproportionate weighting on the “blind drunk salaryman falls asleep on a train and leaves behind a laptop, mobile phone, USB stick etc.” scenario.

I stand corrected.

Edited for clarity

Re:Kitchens in the World, by Income per Month on Tuesday May 17, 2022 @06:43AM (#31408510)
Most Japanese kitchens have a combined microwave and oven; the oven is consequently small compared to one in the US but works well enough. Woks are used for Chinese cooking and so aren't standard in a Japanese kitchen.

The fridges are small by comparison but, especially in cities, most people shop several times a week and so space isn't a problem.

Great to hear. Have used Dead Man's Snitch in the past and plan to do so again in the future.
Re:Bootstrapping a Forth in 40 lines of Lua code (2008) on Monday September 14, 2020 @05:25AM (#24468277)
Forth was available for the Acorn Atom (early 80s). Sadly, didn't have the money or time to go down that route then. Had fun with its Basic though...
+1 for The Culture Map. I would recommend for both old timers and new comers to multi-national/ multi-cultural workplaces.
Re:A Spectre is Haunting Unicode on Sunday July 29, 2018 @08:11AM (#17637721)
This is utterly wonderful - brought to mind the film Brazil's fly in a typewriter.

I'm now going to have to go down the rabbit hole of each of these ghost kanji. Good times.

Re:Caddy – The HTTP/2 Web Server with Automatic HTTPS on Wednesday April 25, 2018 @06:17AM (#16920152)
Agree. The $25/month stops me using it for side projects that generate small but non-zero revenue. Love the concept but not sure when I'll get to play time on something genuinely personal.
Tokyo (not sure about the rest of Japan) has similar with a number of 'play parks' within larger parks. Rope swings, makeshift slides, saws, hammers and nails abound. The kids come back smelling of smoke from the communal bonfire though...

See http://playpark.jp (Japanese only)

Different article (same subject though) already discussed on HN at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16320964
Re:“Ask 'why' five times about every matter” on Monday May 09, 2016 @08:18AM (#11659190)
Both the original Japanese (meaning 5 times) and possibly pun Japanese (meaning misunderstanding) are read as 'gokai'.
Re:APIs: The Building Blocks of the App Economy on Friday November 06, 2015 @11:40PM (#10523741)
In fairness, on site the itself it is pretty clearly highlighted as sponsored content.

Must admit that I was disappointed on clicking to find that it wasn't actual reporting.

Doh! Many thanks; have updated.

Got me!
Re:Ask HN: Resources for learning manual software testing? on Sunday October 11, 2015 @08:29AM (#10369047)
The Ministry of Testing is a good starting point, http://www.ministryoftesting.com

If doesn't sound like you are providing an API but if you are feel free to mail me directly (email is in my profile) for some resources; my company works in that area of testing.

Re:How the UK found Japanese speakers in a hurry in WW2 on Wednesday August 12, 2015 @07:47PM (#10051513)
Another of the SOAS intake at that time was Bernard T Smith, an RAF officer, who was posted to Japan in 1946 to take part in the rebuilding process. Bernard was subsequently involved in the UK computing industry. His paper on a general purpose query language, SPECOL, is interesting to read today given it was published in the 60s. (http://comjnl.oxfordjournals.org/content/11/2/121.full.pdf)

(My company published a Japanese translation of his 1946 memoirs and I had the very good fortune to meet Bernard. Sadly, he passed away last year).
