Re:Ask HN: What tone to use in code review suggestions? on Monday June 27, 2022 @12:34PM (#31897004)
There's not a lot you can contribute unless you worked on the ticket. Notice how the only example you came up with was refactoring.

This was more important back in the day but now linters and formatters are mainstream.

The best time to code-review is at the beginning.

Ugh Seneca. No gracias. Hard pass.
Re:Ghost 5.0 on Monday May 23, 2022 @04:27PM (#31484421)
I doubt it but even then it doesn’t extrapolate any further.

As a dev, it’s your job to tell the client what’s good for them and it sure isn’t this.

Re:Ghost 5.0 on Monday May 23, 2022 @03:58PM (#31484119)
And where are you gonna find this supposed author?
Re:Ghost 5.0 on Monday May 23, 2022 @03:56PM (#31484105)
Not really, even if you’re being sarcastic.
Re:Gov.uk drops jQuery from their front end on Thursday May 19, 2022 @03:34PM (#31439084)
I call bullshit on all accounts. If someone actually tasked you with adding a button to a webpage...
Re:The death of 'mandatory fun' in the office on Thursday May 19, 2022 @03:29PM (#31439012)
That's what I tried to tell students at a bootcamp, but then I never got hired back. They could just fuck off whenever they wanted to go play mario kart, and I tried to tell them that's not what they were paying them for.

No clue if any made it

Re:Gov.uk drops jQuery from their front end on Thursday May 19, 2022 @03:27PM (#31438979)
that crap is solved in a lot of places, jQuery is no longer the only library, and you don't need to support legacy browsers as much anymore, if at all

Companies are getting more security-conscious because of all the hacks and the pain of keeping old browser support is no longer outweighing the risks of upgrading is my theory.

It's too crazy to be satire.
Adding my voice to the consensus that this article is trash. As always, the blackest of falsehoods are dressed up in platitudes.
Re:Netflix lays off about 150 employees on Wednesday May 18, 2022 @03:14PM (#31426513)
I don't know why you're getting downvoted. They used to mail me the criterion collection when I was in high school. Obviously it's not that now.
Re:The business case for fewer developers in meetings on Friday May 13, 2022 @12:42PM (#31369817)
Formal meetings should only be used for either parties or emergencies, and parties are always emergencies, so they take precedence.

Ideally!

Re:WordPress’ market share is shrinking on Thursday May 12, 2022 @01:27PM (#31357191)
Businesses don't care about stuff like that. Especially if the alternative is free. Any maintenance is too much maintenance.
Re:WordPress’ market share is shrinking on Thursday May 12, 2022 @01:22PM (#31357112)
You're kinda doing a little logical fallacy there too.
Re:Why do you waste so much time on the internet? on Friday May 06, 2022 @11:26PM (#31291909)
Because you're avoiding something. What "that" is depends on you, so that's why there's no clear answers. But it's usually some giant shit sandwich you're gonna have to eat and there's nothing you can do about it.

"If you gotta eat shit, do it first thing in the morning." like Albert Einstein used to say.

My theory is that the subconscious works so well as a database so that's why every to-do list gets abandoned.

You're better off just trusting your gut and playing things by ear since information, and even your own motivations, change constantly.

I've liked personal wikis a lot more than GTD-like stuff.

Re:Social media break improves mental health on Friday May 06, 2022 @10:48PM (#31291739)
YMMV, I suppose. There's always psychos and sociopaths. But I wouldn't trust anything they say...
Re:Social media break improves mental health on Friday May 06, 2022 @11:28AM (#31286311)
There's acute mental pain, heroin numbs that too, but you're right.

That kinda thinking, the new "you're wasting your time on Facebook, go read a book" is just the old puritan "get to work loser". Literally, one of the oldest scripts in the docs to get you to work harder for the man. Damn him.

If you're brain is too tired to do anything but watch cartoons or play video games, or just fart around and not do anything, then that's your god-given right and you don't even have to be tired to do that.

Facebook gives us social connections and those are critical for humans. Far more important than reading a book or going for a walk.

Re:Pop culture has become an oligopoly on Wednesday May 04, 2022 @07:22AM (#31258984)
Pop culture has always been an oligopoly. Even before the days of the Beatles or the Olympians or even the Octoads.

You can’t change this because pop culture and the star system are for the masses. Art is for early adopters. It’s that same concept of the technical chasm we have.

Re:Ask HN: Is Ruby on Rails still relevant? on Tuesday April 26, 2022 @04:02PM (#31172464)
If you're just starting out, I wouldn't go with Rails. Get really good at Typescript and React instead if you like the front-end, or Node or Golang on the back-end.

Although it's a hard choice because the books and documentation and training resources are great in Rails, so easier to level up, but I don't think that's where things are going anymore.

Re:Infinite Mac on Tuesday April 26, 2022 @03:47PM (#31172284)
So what was Key Caps for? Some kind of virtual keyboard pops out but I wonder what for.
Kinda like what happens when you bite into a Madeleine.
Re:What I learned during my three days offline on Friday February 18, 2022 @04:13PM (#30391201)
3 days is an excruciatingly long time for someone with a heroin addiction. An internet addiction is more like a weed addiction.
Re:Ask HN: What are your contrarian views? on Sunday February 13, 2022 @10:02PM (#30327966)
Electron is awesome.
Re:Train burglaries in LA on Saturday January 15, 2022 @01:11PM (#29948713)
No it wasn't. The reason ww2 broke out was because the terms they agreed to after WW1 sank the country's economy.
Re:Train burglaries in LA on Friday January 14, 2022 @11:38AM (#29936679)
Why do yall think Hitler invented anti-semitism in Germany? Big Bad Wolf fallacy.
If you're a Vim fan you're probably going to like Obsidian. Great app for Zettelkasten fans
Re:Do Dev Careers Die at 35? on Tuesday October 12, 2021 @04:03PM (#28844396)
Wow no. Extremely poor article. No hard data to back anything up. But anecdotally from my own experience, most working devs are late 20s and above.

This stereotype of younger devs was more valid in Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 days simply because there were fewer devs in the pool but today the field is well saturated

Funny how all the laypeople here are convinced the experts are wrong because word soup. Almost as if there weren't at least 2 or 3 Dunning-Kruger articles every other week.
