I’ve found that aftermarket memory foam eartips work much better than the stock ones for keeping them in my ears.

Ah but is that the Xbox 1, the Xbox One, the Xbox One X or the Xbox Series X?
“Pop” gets used in the UK sometimes but I’ve only heard it in northern England. Never heard Soda anywhere in the UK though, apart from the specific case of cream soda.

There's always DOSBox!

Yes, pretty much all knowledge management in biology is built upon technologies that came from the semantic web community, and biology is certainly not just academia.

There's not much application for knowledge graphs in e.g. a CRUD app of customer names and addresses, but turns out there are an unlimited number of things you can describe about e.g. a protein, and you can't just design one schema because you don't know how it's going to be queried.

See: https://bioregistry.io for countless examples of public datasets used everywhere from academia to "big pharma".

Sorry that was poorly worded - I love the SNES aesthetic and of course hope it’s here to stay. I meant “moving on” as in chronologically to the styles that came afterwards. As though we gradually iterate through the past, marking each era as “retro vintage cool” instead of just “old”.
> Given that we are entering/have entered the age of nostalgia for early 3d

Are we indeed! I look forward to the new era of retro games then - maybe they will finally move on from the SNES aesthetic.

Do you have a reference?

I think it might contribute more than you think, looking at how many points the rising articles have. Especially if your one vote is an early vote.

I’m not sure $.ajax() is a good example now that fetch is widely supported.

They do the same with “quality” too so I guess it’s just their accent.

> Javascript does / did the same thing (var loop variables get hoisted to the function scope, so they are available outside of the loop; add to that that `range` creates a pointer and you have a perfect storm of weird, confusing things.

let is preferred nowadays in JS and doesn’t have the weird hoisting behaviour that var does/did. JS has neither “range” nor pointers though so I’m not sure what you mean by that.

Re:Linux on the laptop works so damn well that it’s boring on Saturday September 24, 2022 @09:18PM (#32968108)
I can’t imagine not being in the “multi DPI” scenario though? It’s not some edge feature that affects a minority of power users, it’s just plugging an external display into a laptop. The DPIs almost never line up - not since high DPI displays became mainstream about 10 years ago.
And Solr wraps it reasonably nicely over HTTP if you’re not on the JVM.

I didn’t know that - I’ll have to check it out, thanks!

Fair enough about the others, but that’s a controversial opinion about 3, which is critically acclaimed and a classic for anyone played it as a kid in the late 90s. It only gets criticised because Ron Gilbert wasn’t involved.

The voice acting cast from it are nearly all in Return, along with lots of references, so it’s canon for Gilbert purists now too!

Re:“Return to Monkey Island” is out today on Monday September 19, 2022 @02:25PM (#32901986)
3 has worked perfectly on ScummVM for at least a decade, and you can buy it on Gog.

4 is indeed very much a pain (and so are the controls). The PS2 version is better than the PC version in my experience.

Re:“Return to Monkey Island” is out today on Monday September 19, 2022 @02:23PM (#32901962)
CoMI (which is 25 years old) definitely is a classic to my generation, who mostly played it before any of the other games. It just gets complained about by older folks who played 1 & 2 first because Ron Gilbert wasn’t involved - which I can understand, but it’s a shame because it’s such an incredible game.

Couple of hours in already and it’s everything I’d hoped for!
Re:Gen Z never learned to read cursive on Sunday September 18, 2022 @12:16PM (#32888743)
Yes, UK educated here and I’ve literally never heard of “cursive” (other than from Americans). Just “joined up handwriting” that we learnt in primary school in those books with ascent/descent lines, which certainly seems to be a lot simpler than American cursive.

OWL2 does a good job of formalising these things. What they call concepts and categories would be Classes in OWL. What they call data would be Individuals.
Re:Win32 Is the Only Stable ABI on Linux? on Monday August 15, 2022 @03:02PM (#32473817)
It’s a reimplementation of the APIs rather than an emulation. Same as how Linux reimplemented UNIX APIs, but it’s not a UNIX emulator.

Re:It's quite hard to lose a Duolingo streak on Sunday July 03, 2022 @10:17AM (#31967852)
I don’t mind streaks alone, but it seems like whenever I open the app I have to click through about 10 pages of animations about League Repairs and Streak Freezes and Friends Quests and Gem Boosts. It’s really frustrating and almost always makes me quit the app immediately. I just want to take a lesson and I’ve paid for the subscription already.
Re:Has the ‘great resignation’ hit academia? on Tuesday May 31, 2022 @04:11PM (#31574331)
The salaries suck but this is the UK. If you’re in the correct social class to be an academic you should have your own independent means, and use your academic salary as nothing more than rent for the townhouse you’re staying in while away from your country estate. /s

(Somehow this is both sarcasm and the literal situation of people I know.)

We used to position the TV such that it was split between two bunks of a bunk bed. One player below and one player above.
Re:DOS Nostalgia: On using a modern DOS workstation on Thursday April 14, 2022 @09:14AM (#31026544)
I also use a Model M. they don’t make them like that any more!

I use an IDE to SD card adapter rather than CF, as SD cards are super cheap and easy to image.

Driver support might be an issue - and it might run TOO fast!
