Re:How Tabasco Became the World's Hot Sauce on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:57PM (#50090884)
Everyone has their preferences and we keep Crystal Hot Sauce, Tabasco, and whatever hot sauces we've created on hand. Our last hot sauce was a ferment using Genghis Khan Brain peppers, which was absolutely amazing; covered all the bases we wanted in a hot sauce for general use.

For Tabasco, we keep it on hand, because it seems to pair well with a lot of the sauerkraut dishes we prepare.

Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Monday October 12, 2026 @07:13PM (#50064365)
"I have to say honestly, that AI looks like an apocalypse for human thinking [ Im glad Tao is warning people, I just dont think many people will listen ]"

I think back to what happened to the school-aged population during COVID lockdowns; widespread learning loss, mental health deterioration and educational inequalities. Students who were self-driven, tutored, or encouraged by their parents to continue learning flourished, and they were no longer limited by the slower learning pace, distractions, and or downtime (transportation and fill courses/periods). Some students leapfrogged ahead of their peers. Unfortunately, most students were negatively impacted by the situation and are still lagging behind where they should be in terms of foundational skills and knowledge.

I'm thinking AI will follow a similar path. Some people will genuinely excel, utilizing AI to optimize learning; but, most people will offload most work to AI and, more or less, become addicted and dependent to it. Of course, leading to what Tao is referring to as "an apocalypse for human thinking."

And, nothing will happen. Did anything happen via Panama and Pandora paper leaks? Perhaps players with negligible political power to protect themselves were held accountable or selected by bigger fish to fall, but beyond those, nothing. The phenomenon is still happening and social collective action is continuously disrupted via no shortage of mechanisms. Wealth concentration is increasing and buying politicians was always a thing, but now it's publicly flaunted without recourse and they operate against what's good for the electorate interests openly--almost in spite.

I mean, the faltering ability to stir people to deal with Flock issue should be incredibly eye opening to what continuously slides under the radar for heinous activities that are not nearly as public facing or noticeably evident.

Fired up the old mIRC license I've had for decades last week to explore old servers and channels. Many are dormant, but life is still teeming in many. I'll probably wind up re-donating to mIRC developers and investing some time into IRC communities. I find the experience preferable to Discord.

Not a bad actor spreading misinformation, but I encountered a similarish weird, dystopian experience with ChatGPT.

Utilized ChatGPT on my PC to search local plant nursery inventories for a specific tree. Output showed several local nurseries with rough probability descriptions regarding whether they have the tree in inventory, except for one nursery. For that nursery, ChatGPT provided a direct link to the specified tree, which was directly on the nursery's domain, showed a picture and description of the tree, and even showed the item in-stock with 6 in inventory at the 5-gallon size.

Excited, I plan my trip and am about to pick up my tree, I then double-check the nursery site on my phone to verify location and stock. As I attempted to navigate the website inventory to find the tree, I noticed that the tree no longer existed. There is no page for that varietal or species of tree on the entire website's domain.

I head back inside and look at the ChatGPT provided link on the PC and there it is, showing the inventory that doesn't show up when you use the nursery's website to directly find it without the provided link. A call to the nursery, further verified that the tree is not in stock, nor have they ever carried it.

ChatGPT made it all up. Did ChatGPT decide to do this, or did the nursery pay for this type of "advertising" to generate in-person customers? Nevertheless, still an incredibly weird and dystopian experience.

Re:Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society? on Monday September 28, 2026 @11:10AM (#49879315)
US schools were restricted from engaging in appropriate disciplinary action without the threat of losing federal funding. Either schools take action against violent students appropriately, or they can lose federal funding. They were financially strong armed to ignore it.

It's extremely difficult to overlook the consequences of how this policy impacted normalizing violence from an administrative POV.

Unfortunately, I imagine that procedure would significantly increase the probability of mortality, if not directly kill the fish.
Re:ChatGPT Images 2.5 on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @03:15PM (#49615359)
The Facebook Marketplace experience for used items has depreciated considerably with the widespread adoption of LLMs. Between placing attractive models in photos to help sell items to "improving" the visual condition of items that completely misrepresent the real condition of the item, it's becoming a trickier landscape to navigate to find what you're looking for.
Re:ChatGPT Images 2.5 on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @03:07PM (#49615192)
I think every restaurant on Uber Eats in my area uses AI slop or, minimally, AI "enhanced" food pictures.
Re:No constitutional right to clean water, federal court finds on Monday September 07, 2026 @02:56PM (#49601693)
Constitutional right? No. But, it's an abject failure of the local government overseeing the infrastructure to fix or solicit help to fix. Jackson, MS government failed. Targeting them on the grounds of a constitutional violation seems like borderline legal malpractice, but probably an unfortunate standard time wasting legal protocol, for lawyers to suggest this was a viable route to begin with.
Re:Following legal advice, the Nitter project will continue on Sunday September 06, 2026 @03:09PM (#49589752)
Advice? Maybe ballpark quality if you can avoid hallucinations. The legal connections that will help net you a win, certainly not.
Re:Are Crows Our Friends? on Friday August 28, 2026 @12:29PM (#49480908)
A murder of crows lives about 200 m away and whenever a predatory bird enters their perimeter, they swarm it until vacates the area. Everything from osprey, hawks, vultures, and eagles, they leave Great Blue Herons alone though.

I don't want to go out of my way to befriend them, because they may harass people who are not me on the property.

Re:Nitter project received cease and desist on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @02:15PM (#49438251)
Explains why the various links were suggesting to use different instances today. Surprised it lasted this long.
I don't even know who owns forgeeks.net. They're only a couple months old and is disseminated by a new HN account. Some of the "author" social media links appear AI generated.

Red flags galore. Wouldn't surprise me if it was bankrolled by bad actors and/or a website created/operated by AI agents.

Reminds me of a recent story about a Norwegian teenager who traveled to the UK to perform a hitman job for the Foxtrot Network, a Swedish organized crime group linked to Iran. The teenager received instructions from someone called "Agent 47."

I hear truck liner spray paint works wonders.
We do, it's called an outdoor BBQ. Meanwhile everything inside is electric, minimal toxic byproducts from cooking and zero chance of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Re:DARPA, U.S. Air Force fly AI-controlled F-16 on Thursday July 23, 2026 @12:39PM (#49024464)
Human control in flight has often taken a backseat to automation. For example, the SR-71, built in the 60s flew too fast to rely on human decision making for several tasks. If they were off by a fraction of a second, they would miss their intended recon target; so, both the navigation and sensor control were largely automated.

Seems odd to invest this much into AI flight of aircraft designed for manned flight, when it would be better to build craft spec'd for AI flight without human life support systems.

Re:Does creatine make you smarter? on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @04:45PM (#49013178)
Last year, I was severely sleep deprived, but needed to focus. On a whim, I took 25 grams of micronized creatine and it removed the issue with the dampened cognitive abilities. It just worked. It's nothing I would recommend as a long-term solution to sleep problems, but as a possible solution in a pinch, it could work.
Re:DOGE is done. What happened to its records? on Monday July 13, 2026 @12:37PM (#48895184)
"There isn't really much waste in federal spending."

That's debatable, because of all the pork programs that are snuck into large, omnibus spending bills. However, even that could be sold as, "one man's trash is another man's treasure" type of scenario; ergo, no waste!

I challenge anyone to read through the budget proposals and see what was authorized, it's interesting to say the least.

There's many isolated communities abroad that benefit from this coverage. Plus, when I begin my solo sailing adventure, I intend to use Starlink as my primary method to maintain contact, of course with traditional methods serving as backup.
Rented a car out of Munich and they forbade me from driving it to Italy. Said thieves are too common to risk driving, even in northern Italy. Train was simple enough though.
Information asymmetries are a bane in the medical doctor market.

Trust doctors with a grain of salt. There are many bad doctors that market themselves as good doctors, but are in reality terrible providers.

I recently had a scare, where I was encouraged by two separate general practitioners to seek immediate care with an ophthalmologist. I visited the ophthalmologist who I was referred to and they said everything was great, then booked my next appointment for a year out. Four days later, I started losing vision in my right eye.

After visiting a competent ophthalmologist, they were flabbergasted by what the other did. Ten appointments within 2 weeks later with the new specialist and we're undoing the damage that was easily preventable.

In short, some doctors are borderline DANGEROUS, but it's difficult to distinguish them with the ample legal protections they receive.

Anyhow, hope your brother recovered well.

Re:Dostoyevsky Isn't Difficult on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @09:43PM (#48667809)
War and Peace is one of those books I've reread every decade since I was a teenager. It's one of my favorite novels because, as I've matured and moved through different stages of life, the parts that resonate with me change significantly. Each rereading feels like encountering a different book, not because the words have changed, but because my own life experiences have shaped what draws my attention.

I'm sure many books offer this experience, but War and Peace explores the human condition across a lifetime in a way few novels do.

Re:Driving in America Is Headlight Hell on Thursday June 11, 2026 @11:49AM (#48492025)
The worst offenders are people buying aftermarket extra bright headlights, then incorrectly installing them at an angle that blinds oncoming traffic.
Yes and people who use it for dominating industries and markets out of pure greed have the potential displace and disenfranchise large swaths of the population. The possibility to tier society into people with full access to AI and people with severely limited access binding them with significant permanent disadvantages.

You don't have to agree with everything to Pope stands for to understand the potential dark paths AI could lead humanity to.

There's no shortage of people willing to make extremely poor financial decisions on games of chance, it's why gambling was heavily regulated. Visit a casino and witness addiction in-person, it's a sad sight.
