its not about their capabilities. It's that there just aren't six million vacant jobs...

Striking in the face of automation often just accelerates the automation. Ask the McDonald's cashiers...

I wonder if UBI might be an admittedly dark and cynical way to facilitate a possible AI transition. If e.g. full self driving for trucks is perfected in the US within the next three years and more than six million truckers loose their job at once, there is realistically no way to retrain this cohort. Using taxes on AI revenue to facilitate (somewhat universal) BI for that group, together with very liberal drug policies might keep social peace. Granted, not a satisfying live, but preferable to the alternatives...

Suddenly, physical Gold in a safe at home looks fairly decentralized and censorship-proof

I like the AI future shown in the dots announcement trailer (https://openai.com/index/introducing-dots/). Cooking, engaging with family, enjoying nature while simultaneously conversing with an unobtrusive AI that facilitates your creative and commercial endeavors. Would that be so terrible?
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:22AM (#50243202)
I wonder if we're already close to peak value at the foundation model/API level. With so many good open-weight models out there, I think more and more of the money will end up in the applications built on top. Unless companies like Anthropic can move into that space, I'm not sure I'd bet on them as long-term investments over the next 10–20 years.

interesting, this received about an equal amount of up and down votes. Guess this is like a political microcosm

You'd expect this from totalitarian regimes where even the most mundane cultural output becomes a vehicle for ideology. When you read a book about raising babies in Nazi Germany, you're actually learning how to raise obedient, emotionally hardened citizens. When you watch a romantic musical comedy in Stalin's Soviet Union, you're actually watching a celebration of the supposed superiority of Soviet society. Hell, my own dad who studied music in an east German conservatory had to write his thesis about Marx perception of classical music.

Somehow, this ideology achieved this without any of the pressures of a totalitarian regime - just by being an intransigent minority.

Re:Bring Back the Cool Save File Screens on Sunday October 25, 2026 @01:10PM (#50233738)
I think the earlier console generations where created by a bunch of passionate nerds eager to make something cool.

The current generations are created by highly talented designers whose work is reviewed by committee after committee with user research, marketing, management and creative direction all wanting to have a say - leading to the most universally acceptable compromise.

Once game development goes into the 300 million plus per title range, you really can't have any John Carmak or Romeros running around building stuff they are passionate about anymore. There's just too much money on the line...

Related question: Whenever I try to run Image generation locally, be it with Flux or Qwen, I seem to be getting results that are about 1-2 years behind what ChatGPT can produce today - and take up to 5 minutes for a single image. Is this a hardware problem (running it on a decent windows gaming PC), a configuration problem or just the reality of what local models can deliver at the moment on consumer hardware?

I was curios if there was a noticable increase in the number of security incidents before 2026 - and the answer seems to be "no". The Identity Theft Resource Center has the following data for Reported Data Compromises in the US (keep in mind that the internet itself has been growing as well):

| Year | Reported US data compromises |

|---|---:|

| 2016 | 1,099 |

| 2017 | 1,506 |

| 2018 | 1,175 |

| 2019 | 1,279 |

| 2020 | 1,107 |

| 2021 | 1,859 |

| 2022 | 1,798 |

| 2023 | 3,202 |

| 2024 | 3,152 |

| 2025 | 3,322 |

Curios what 2026 will look like...

Re:Show HN: The Internet Is on Fire on Thursday October 22, 2026 @05:41AM (#50193224)
I was curious if there is a clear increase of security incidents before and after AI. And up to 2025, the answer was no. The Identity Theft Resource Center has the following data for Reported Data Compromises in the US:

| Year | Reported US data compromises |

|---|---:|

| 2016 | 1,099 |

| 2017 | 1,506 |

| 2018 | 1,175 |

| 2019 | 1,279 |

| 2020 | 1,107 |

| 2021 | 1,859 |

| 2022 | 1,798 |

| 2023 | 3,202 |

| 2024 | 3,152 |

| 2025 | 3,322 |

Of course, coding agents only became widely available in 2026. There's no number for 2026 yet, but it feels like compromises have increased sharply in recent months.

Now, the PHP vulnerability itself is not an effect of AI (I believe), but the ability to exploit it efficiently at scale is.
