I literally tried that few days a go, what you're saying is not true.

Compiling Linux:

AMD 6800HS, ~4mins.

Apple M1 Pro, Linux VM, ~10 mins.

What's BSD's stance on such or similar situations?

I'm looking for an OS, Linux is not just a kernel anymore it seems, for this and other reasons, hint, Linux Foundation and their cooperate lords.

We can't hold back the world because of some lazy UI Devs, I can't believe we still facing scaling issues in 2024!

My solution, under Linux, I get laptop screens with 2X scaling, i.e. 2.8K and 3.2K for larger laptops.

Same here,

All I do on top of what you said is use Traefik for reverse proxy and let's encrypt.

Check out one of the supported Motorola's, they sell cheap brand new.
Huawei MateBook 14 (AMD 4600H)

Very close to perfect for me!

Pros:

- AMD CPU/GPU

- 3:2 HiDPI screen

-Metal construction

-Long battery life

- Very quiet even when under load

Cons:

- Fingerprint reader is not supported

- Screen is reflective and 60Hz only, I'm spoilt by high refresh screens now, buy one and you'll understand why.

Looking forward to ThinkPad T14 AMD Gen 5, last year's was close to perfect, but no way I'll be investing in a 60Hz LoDPI screen device.

These kind of news make me feel happy that I'm Apple, Microsoft and Google* free.

Phone is ungoogled Android.

Re:LineageOS is currently installed on 1.5M Android devices on Tuesday February 06, 2024 @12:07PM (#39277009)
It's best to try it, people use different subset of apps.

As I replied below, everything I need works, including a number of banking apps.

I used to use Lineage OS with microG, but now I use iode, very similar.

Note, I never patched or installed something besides microG ever, so my experience is as close to pure microG experience as possible.

Re:LineageOS is currently installed on 1.5M Android devices on Tuesday February 06, 2024 @12:03PM (#39276948)
Weird!

Here in UK, using microG, banking apps for Nationwide, Starling, Revolut, HSBC all work with no issues.

Generally, I face no issue using any app.

Location services and notification both work reliably.

I bought a Lenovo Ideapad Pro 5, 7840HS.

First order, it had coil whine, rattling touchpad and a corrupted edid.

Second order, it also had coil whine, rattling and non-working touchpad.

I'm truly puzzled.

If you're referring to Vivid Resourcing, they're truly horrible, I got interrogated by them for 30+ mins and they disappear, happened twice so it can't be a one off!
Re:Firefox has surpassed Chrome on Speedometer on Tuesday July 18, 2023 @10:23AM (#36772802)
Probably PGO.

Even prebuilt Firefox tend to be faster than distro provided ones, at least at some point on the past.

This is why I self host, gaining knowledge is a pro not a con.

Personally, this guy[0] eased me back into electronics, very clear explanations and beginner friendly.

Thanks for bringing this up, I should've read the TCs before moving away from their self-hosted solution.

I'm definitely switch away from Bitwarden.

Re:I Give Up on Free Software Phones on Wednesday June 21, 2023 @02:34PM (#36422456)
You raise a good question, unfortunately I asked the same and no one seems to know the answer.

My other question was, why the first iPhone is significantly faster than a recent PinePhone.

Care to elaborate plz?

How would we go about GPUs, NCs, and many kinds of drivers?

Why the down votes for this comment?

My Android does have that option, under: Hotspot and tethering > Allow clients to use VPNs.

Note however, my ROM is based on LineageOS, probably the reason why not everyone got it?

Re:NixOS 22.11 “Raccoon” Released on Friday December 02, 2022 @03:14AM (#33828083)
How about isolation, how do you manage that? Are services ran under different containers, VMs or namespaces?
Re:Arch Linux turns 20: Small, simple, great documentation on Thursday November 24, 2022 @04:00PM (#33736182)
I use luks with btrfs, setup using archinstall, works as expected, I hope this helps.
Re:The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry on Thursday November 03, 2022 @02:05PM (#33454947)
I feel your pain, I've been there.

My advice, get a job around (but not in) London area, if not, get a remote role with a company in south, that gave me a bump from 35k to 71k.

Even better, leave perm and get a contract (outside IR35), you can easily get between 350 to 450 a day.

... and yes, that's doing C++, some Qt, some MFC, some Python, and no PhD/MSc nonsense.

> Managers unblock their team and get out of the way.

You're talking as if Devs are brainless outside of programming, let's babysit them.

The best development managers/directors I've worked with were hands on, and they knew significantly more than me, they knew their stuff really well.

Re:Review of the Kinesis Advantage360 Professional on Saturday October 22, 2022 @06:08PM (#33302650)
Hi, Can you please tell me if the fun key (big roundish key) gets in the way when typing?

I really want one, but I'm not sure, I like resting my palm when typing.

Also, are the wells well curved/deep? I can't tell from static images on the web.

Thanks.

Re:The Fedora Project Remains Community Driven on Saturday October 01, 2022 @04:20AM (#33044970)
> as long as you comply with US laws (unfortunately) and the Fedora Code of Conduct.

This is it, I'm not in the US, many aren't either, so why shall I suffer the consequence of such decisions.

Note sure if it's feasible to have a none-US build whilst based in the US.

But for the time being it's over for me, I've been using Fedora for years and recommending it to friends and family, despite the RPM fusion required after initial setup, but not anymore.

Let's see how welcoming Arch is.

Re:How fast is 12th Gen Intel Core? on Tuesday August 09, 2022 @03:22AM (#32395096)
If you don't mind, can you test Ubuntu or Fedora to see if the issue is present?

The reason I'm asking, according to a Lenovo talk from DebConf22 [0], the guy said it takes some time for patches to reach upstream, but with Fedora and Ubuntu they have some connections to shortcut some patches before they reach upstream.

My experience is otherwise, see my comment above.
Re:How fast is 12th Gen Intel Core? on Tuesday August 09, 2022 @03:13AM (#32395064)
Lenovo ThinkPad T14 AMD Gen 1 here. My experience is totally different, using Fedora 36, everything works! Battery life I have no exact numbers, but definitely way more than 3 hours.
Re:I Finally Found a Solid Debian Tablet: The Surface Go 2 on Thursday June 30, 2022 @02:58PM (#31936951)
I won't bore you with the details, but things are locked down and a dev folder structure is assumed and baked into the build system, both for sources and dependencies.
