Well, back then when the Pixel 7a had just come out. So comparable to an iPhone 11 now
Or even Google itself. I got a 150€ trade in rebate for an iPhone 8 with a cracked screen.

But if I called you in the middle of the night to offer you something that will make every 9th sneeze on every second tuesday of March in a leap year less irritating your first reaction wouldn't be to thank me.
Re:Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain on Monday September 28, 2026 @01:29AM (#49873997)
A minor inconvenience compared to the thousands of charger cables and wall boxes that would charge driving the cars for a very small moment.
Sure. But getting something free for something you'd have done anyway? There's many ways to nudge people/yourself into specific behaviors even though the rewards are not worth it when thinking it through
Re:Korea raises data breach fines to 10% of revenue on Sunday September 20, 2026 @02:41PM (#49778655)
This is exactly what the GDPR does (except it's 4%, not 10%).

We're in the middle of finding it out with climate change.

Was it the one with the elided null check?
Unless you're an [ex-partner and/or woman seeking an out of state abortion](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/aug/13/flock-saf...). So it's like deflating a police car's tires while the occupant is getting ready to stalk his ex-girlfriend.

Trump bombs Iran -> oil price goes up. You buy oil futures before the bombing and get the price difference paid out.
At long as it doesn't involve [multi purpose eggs](https://www.euronews.com/culture/2026/06/06/mehrzweckeier-di...) or calls to violence you should be fine.
Re:Show HN: Rudoc – a 4.5MB Rust document converter on Sunday July 26, 2026 @06:24AM (#49056573)
The comparison to pandoc seems needlessly hostile. Most users get pandoc as a standalone binary (e.g. the Debian package).

Pandoc is a bit on the larger size, but for what it offers (templating, lua filters, built-in templates for all supported markup languages) it is entirely reasonable.

Re:Stinkpot: SQLite-Backed Shell History on Sunday July 26, 2026 @04:04AM (#49055801)
AFAIK it is always backed by a sqlite DB. That way the sync just populates the DB and the completion process doesn't care (or wait for) the central source.
Modern gaming hardware is getting increasingly inaccessible and the micro transaction infected mobile gaming market is the only one make money.
Until you measure the apartment later and find out that a) it's much smaller and b) it doesn't matter because you rent the apartment as seen, not as advertised.
Re:Costco Is the Anti-Amazon on Sunday July 05, 2026 @12:19AM (#48791225)
Ironically I found my current keyboard (a quite nice Cherry) in a store near me. For specialty parts where it doesn't make sense to have to them sitting around in stores everywhere online shopping is still allowed, but I only need to order something every few weeks
Re:Costco Is the Anti-Amazon on Sunday July 05, 2026 @12:15AM (#48791216)
I have a family of four and we manage just fine. The kids aren't toddlers any more (which only means that we can't put everything in the bottom layer of the stroller), but when they come to the age where they eat a week's shopping in a single sitting they will be old enough to take over a few shopping trips on their own.
Re:Costco Is the Anti-Amazon on Sunday July 05, 2026 @12:12AM (#48791197)
Depends on how much we need. There are two car sharing stations next to the super markets when we need to stock up on long lasting basics, but I typically cover half a week (full family) in a trip. The nice thing is that when you absolutely need something (either for a recipe or when one of the kids has a sudden urgent urge) it's no big deal
Re:Costco Is the Anti-Amazon on Saturday July 04, 2026 @06:52AM (#48784433)
I live in a walkable quarter and I can reach three full supermarkets and 2 specialty supermarkets within 5 minutes. Doesn't matter whether I need to stock up on milk, vegetables or hand peeled shrimp in garlic sauce, I can get it. Same with public schools (5 within a 2 mile radius), childcare (3), hospitals (2) and the park.
Re:macOS 27 Beta Breaks the Ability to Boot Asahi Linux on Thursday June 11, 2026 @01:44PM (#48493727)
Because gaming consoles are for a very specific purpose (and sold as such – the ruling against Sony for blocking Linux on the PS3 only happened because they advertised Linux compatibility) and Macs are general purpose computers

"It's not gambling when I can effect the outcome!"
Publicly traded stocks‘ reactions to a war are harder to predict and have way less leverage than a bet like "US will launch 527 missiles against Iran between 3 and 5 pm"
If the expense is tax deductable, it mostly doesn't matter whether you have $10 earnings vs $10 business expenses or $10K.
At 0.1% (which still seems high) you lose out on the entrance fee but still get paid for food, drinks, memorabilia etc. Compare that to the cost for the system and the negative publicity and I'm not sure it's worth it (unless they have another motive they don't want to admit)
You can make this claim for any larger number by asserting a base rate of 1% without evidence.
Re:The World's Most Complex Machine on Wednesday April 29, 2026 @01:23AM (#47944465)
I asked the ASML rep at KubeCon who they were there for as nobody I knew had a quarter billion to spare. He told me they were just interested customers, but if I didn't want the newest machine I could get one for 70 million euros.
