Canonical isn't a publicly traded company
supposedly because USSR didn't care much about most of the students, they wrote hardcore books such that a talented student in a remote village will get the knowledge and contribute to building rockets in the future. No one cared for the remaining 99.9 percent of students and their pointless struggles
Re:US Army practices digging temporary battlefield graves on Friday October 30, 2026 @02:02PM (#50307799)
Sometimes it is eerie. I remember in 2021 there was a new standard for creating mass graves published, to come into full power on 2022-02-01.

Re:Full Disk Encryption on Fedora with TPM2 on Sunday October 25, 2026 @02:51PM (#50234805)
I don't expect my machine to reboot unattended. I immediately imagine the government prying it from my hands, booting it and then searching for vulnerabilities in lightdm / dumping the RAM (just checked and I have a line "TSME enabled" in kernel logs so dumping data from the memory sticks probably will be useless)

---

I've never thought much about secure unattended reboots, thank you for suggesting

as long as it's not the government who is doing the censorship / content moderation then I'm OK

since the government is too powerful and can enforce its ideas with legal violence

Re:Full Disk Encryption on Fedora with TPM2 on Saturday October 24, 2026 @08:06PM (#50226803)
I always struggle to understand the point of using disk encryption with TPM, as opposed to the disk encryption with LUKS + passphrase which you remember

With TPM you depend on it so much. What if it breaks? Should I backup the recovery key beforehand? My life has enough keys already Moving the disk to a new laptop also becomes pain

man! I love the instant mouse movements in unreal 1 games

maybe my PC just sucks but it feels in modern games your mouse movements go via so many abstractions and it feels like your movement is constrained by some liquid

Re:Postgres isn't slow your storage is on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:55AM (#50052905)
yes, writing data to a local disk is faster than sending bytes over a network to your (redundant and replicated) network attached storage

run your own dht crawler
Re:Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours on Friday October 09, 2026 @12:42PM (#50023134)
man if you organize a group which can assemble in public like this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committees_of_correspondence#/... in Russia, you won't be coming home tonight
Re:Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours on Friday October 09, 2026 @11:56AM (#50022371)
Americans are so naive about the "turn on their motherland" part. It's not really a reply to you, I just remembered some american whom I met and he was treating us as kids, saying things as "alone you are weak but together you are strong!"

yes if you could magically organize 10_000 people they could overthrow anyone. But organizing is hard. Starting from a fact that they need some secure comminution channel, and the government fights VPN quite actively. How would you reach these potential people? You could do sort of broadcast a public message "if you don't like tsar let's take a walk tomorrow" but this signal would also be received by the police, so they can prepare. And we don't have the beautiful gun ownership culture of America.

And if you do something alone you just perish in prison.

great question, I don't have a good answer. supposedly there are gpus, here you can rent a H200 (a GPU which was released after the war had started) https://selectel.ru/services/dedicated/hgx-h200/

But how many of them exist and how easy is to replace, I have no idea

why are you mentioning roce and ml training? These are cpu-only machines with 10 Gbit uplinks shared between every virtual machine. I'm not super familiar with the helmet offering, but last time I checked their GPU servers were baremetal

Maybe calling the setup "suboptimal" is incorrect and it is optimal given their fleet and customers

a river crab? Is this a joke related to the chinese great firewall?
- dht network crawler, to have your own index of torrents

- vpn exit node

- personal email server

it's a part of internet. To properly block it, you need to block it on the IP level
It feels like your treat the facebook as some common good, and censorship made by it thus preposterous, something which should be punished

But it's a multimillion dollar corporation in a foreign country, to me the idea they owe you something is strange

---

Governments are still more powerful than corporations, this is why I am more afraid of the censorship of the internet by governments than of it by corporations

how do you block access to it without going to TCP/IP level? And when governments do that, everything goes to shit
Yes, this would be a better outcome. Or at least make it illegal for politicians to use facebook / TikTok

From where I am, one third of politicians in recent elections have tiktok. It's a shame, everyone knows about human rights violation in China but the european politicians have no issues with using tiktok.

nothing good usually comes out of governments censoring internet
Re:Google no longer provides direct URLs in search results on Saturday September 12, 2026 @04:03AM (#49670090)
there was a source code leak and you can see some examples there which make the president's image more alluring. e.g. if you search for "Putin" they add an invisible "-crab" to your query

that's the most innocent example from the top of my head. There probably are many more serious censorship issues

Re:Google no longer provides direct URLs in search results on Saturday September 12, 2026 @04:00AM (#49670074)
I wish yandex worked well, but the enshittification wave reached it too. It used to have such a great reverse image search, now it's useless

Re:I advertise malicious software on Google Ads on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @12:50PM (#49629485)
The part where they block the customer support and then you can't do anything is so real

autistic retards at microsoft blocked my account on github and if I go to the customer support portal the only option I get there is to... reinstate my account. And I can't use it also, literally the POST is failing

There is no way to delete my github account in this situation. I've lost track of how long have they been holding my email and phone address hostage. For 6 months already? Damn microsoft people, just delete my account, or I'll advocate for building concentration camps for microsoft employees
