News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

And yet, for anyone who believes we’re on the path to true AI these are all irrelevant.
Re:It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:15PM (#50329301)
Proton has always been a sham. Their users may be privacy-minded, but not privacy-competent.
Re:HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:16AM (#50324909)
Indeed. They just prove that there’s widespread, irrational aversion against Youtube Premium.
Re:ChatGPT and Codex usage limits merging on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:10AM (#50324867)
One kilotokens would have to be 1024 tokens, and so on, as we’ve congregated on multiples of that for context window sizes.

Netflix was easy, switching to it meant saving money for all the TV addicts.

Compare it to the widespread refusal to pay for Youtube Premium even as ads get worse there.

Don't worry, Anthropic (like the others) are experienced in shrugging off their problems: illegaly strip-mining training data, the massive environmental impact of their product, enabling bombing civilians and committing genocide -- if none of those stick, this itty bit of financial loss won't either.
It’s available only to those who read the announcement.
Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:10PM (#50278295)
Leave it to Google to require a Chemistry degree to be able to differentiate their LLMs.

OpenAI: astral objects, bigger = better.

Anthropic: more pretentious = better.

Google: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Fix your country.
Re:No Signs of AI Payoff Outside the Tech Sector on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:10PM (#50224681)
For AI to be properly integrated into businesses it would need to be enabled by people who would shortly after become irrelevant.

This may well remain a "true communism/socialism has never been tried" situation.

It would coincide with too many people not being able to buy gaming hardware though.

But also AI can just recreate games from gameplay videos.

It's words vs. action, and I couldn't care less about anyone's words.

And honor is in the action, dishonor in the words.

If you need Docker to run PHP software you're beyond any help already.
Irrelevant. Public servants are to be held to a higher standard.
Re:Muse Spark Open on Thursday October 15, 2026 @02:57PM (#50108525)
You can just use your old dual 512GB M3 Ultras until you get the M5s. Man, people always whine about something...
Re:Things to know if you get cancer in 2026 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:29PM (#50094676)
Frankly, I have the impression that doctors at large put as little care towards their patients’ health as us programmers do towards our software.
Re:I tried to move my notes out of Emacs. I failed. Again on Saturday October 10, 2026 @06:57AM (#50031654)
Finding the right balance is crucial in everything we as humans do. If you lack in it, you should work on developing that skill in general.
Same idea but as an iOS app: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/big-words/id296290510

It needs an update, but still works. Very useful to show your name, address or reference number in a post office and other similar places.

Re:The smartest Claude Code feature is not for its users on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @10:29PM (#49987308)
The suggested message would’ve been only created after it did the unnecessary work.
The mentioned “Qwen3.8-27B at Q6“ can be run on a <1500$ Mac mini and with the barest technical expertise.
Not the original commenter, but Upcloud has them at that price for spot instances: https://upcloud.com/pricing/
Note: this does also not appear to have anything to do with music playback and having a thousand songs in your pocket.
Re:Kolibri Has Landed: A Sovereign Open-Weight Model on Saturday October 03, 2026 @11:55AM (#49945353)
Friendly note: your website's font at its current size is pretty bad on a non-retina display before zooming in.
Re:From the creator of Redis; run LLM locally with ds4 on Saturday October 03, 2026 @10:23AM (#49944533)
Anyone who didn’t buy a 128GB Strix Halo system when they were 2500€ has only themselves to blame.
Re:Pi 1.0 on Thursday October 01, 2026 @04:46PM (#49926879)
This should’ve been version 3.14.
Re:Sonnet 5.5 on Monday September 28, 2026 @04:44PM (#49884084)
Maybe they could put Fable onto creating a website that doesn't use 80% of the GPU on an Apple M2.
Most people in any nation aren't observant enough, without exception. Since it's the Japanese people whose opinion counts here, it's their turn right now to be called out for it.
Re:ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026 on Friday September 25, 2026 @10:26AM (#49845155)
