Welcome to the real world. Now spend your time reading (You may think not but it's very important. After all, "no man is an island") articles about other apps, how they are changing things for users and then try to come up with situations you'd want an app for (easier said than done, probably the toughest part). Also as stated below, adding a new feature to a github and/or open source project would be a nice way to start.
Re:Ask HN: Any good Node.js books?
on Saturday March 19, 2011 @02:13PM (#2344278)
Here is one: http://ofps.oreilly.com/titles/9781449398583/
and this is how the book will look like once it's out: http://www.readwriteweb.com/hack/2011/03/nodejs-book.php
Since node.js is still under development, you'll find very few text on it. Still try to look for code/examples on official site and videos are available too if you do a google search.

Best way to start is to code and learn. Pick any engine and start coding. Java, C++ and/or Python are OGRE-3D, Panda 3D, Unity.
