These days, closer to 1/2.
Re:Tarsnap – Online backups for the truly paranoid on Saturday May 25, 2013 @10:34AM (#5767377)
Interesting. Tarsnap and rsync.net seem to alternate coverage on HN, and for the longest time I kept forgetting they were different, even though I had vague sense of confusion.

This one is Colin Percival's project.

Uh, bringing a billion people onto the Internet for the first time, and turning the 3rd world into the 1st world, isn't most people's definition of soul-sucking.

Re:Yahoo submits bid for Hulu on Saturday May 25, 2013 @01:12AM (#5766440)
The Hadoop team quit Yahoo to start HortonWorks last year.

Most of those Flickr users are dormant accounts, like mine.

....and you just said the manufacturer's name on a unrelated forum, so their ad campaign was a success.
Re:Yahoo submits bid for Hulu on Saturday May 25, 2013 @01:05AM (#5766414)
Apple has a team devoted to making Apple products easy to use in productions, and aggressively courts producers. But they don't "pay". It's exactly the same as how companies send press releases (and demos) to lazy journalists to reprint as news.
Re:Yahoo submits bid for Hulu on Saturday May 25, 2013 @01:02AM (#5766410)
Most of Netflix doesn't have ads.
Re:Yahoo submits bid for Hulu on Saturday May 25, 2013 @01:02AM (#5766408)
My understanding is that the Hulu subscription pays for fixed overhead (and profit), and the ads pay for marginal licensing. That might be a lie, though.
Re:Yahoo submits bid for Hulu on Saturday May 25, 2013 @12:57AM (#5766399)
TV shows are written in "acts", they are designed to be broken up. Ads may be a horrible distruption (so I suggest muting them and blocking or averting from the images), but for a good TV experience, you should take a break for a minute to let the previous act sink in before watching the next act.
Re:Can I help you? Why retail customers always say No on Friday May 24, 2013 @02:09PM (#5764425)
You just pre-Godwin'ed the thread.

No one is required to take a job as a professional harasser. And if you really have sympathy for the employees, then consider that the more victims fight back, the fewer people would join the profession, and wages would increase, hurting the evil owners.

Comments on reddit mentioned that the bridge was condemned in 1992, and repeatedly since then, but no one bothered to fix it. I thought we had a big goverment stimulus package for shovel-ready projects over the past few years...
It wasn't free. Meal plan is a line item on the student bill.
Re:The rise of Silicon Dad on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @02:02PM (#5596823)
Wow, that's really sad lead-in: A mom who is "famous", so her daughter introduces her to her friends via Google Search, instead of meeting them.

Hooray for egalitarianism, but it's still sad that any parent leaves their child's life behind.

I would love to see the QBASIC program you wrote when you were 4 years old.
Re:Why aren’t younger Americans driving anymore? on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @01:03AM (#5593377)
Switching from cars to transit is great.

But for all the suburban kids who are switching from "going out to see people" to "staying home alone on the computer", I worry for their fate.

If they are hanging out with their neighbors instead of driving around town aimlessly, I suppose it's not bad.

Re:I had three days to find a cofounder. This is what I did on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @12:59AM (#5593363)
The man who goes alone can also slip on a mossy rock and slowly starve to death in a ravine with a broken leg.

ASD wasn't created in the past 20 years, it has just seen a great increase in diagnosis.
Re:Why aren’t younger Americans driving anymore? on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @12:54AM (#5593345)
It's funny (sad) that SimCity, which was created with an intentional undercurrent of liberal manipulation public opinion regarding urban planning, missed the boat so badly on that topic. It wasn't just an oversimplified game mechanic.
Re:Why aren’t younger Americans driving anymore? on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @12:51AM (#5593339)
Younger Americans are eating less meat because the USA is slowly progressing toward vegetarianism and away from the horrors of factory farming. There is plenty of cheap low-quality meat available.

Exactly like DC.
Re:Tearable Cloth Simulation in JavaScript on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @12:45AM (#5593321)
The threads move far too fast in general, to be any physical substance.

Needs a bit of parameter tuning.

Ever mail client written since ~1990 is capable of downloading your Gmail.

You can pay for many years in advance, and you can register for auto-renewal.

Paying to keep your identity is far better than borrowing it from someone who has made no promises to you.

This sort of discussion really just upsets people (not because of fighting, but because of how it makes people confused about themselves and others) for no real benefit.

The Hard Problem is solved, in the sense that it is known to be hard, and troubling. Let it be. There are so many more rewarding things to put the same effort to.

Re:Why teenagers really do need an extra hour in bed on Monday April 22, 2013 @07:32PM (#5592380)
The entire school system is a fraud by which politicians pay teachers to do bad jobs that they hate?

Parents don't care about their kids' education?

Re:Dumped by Google on Monday April 22, 2013 @06:37PM (#5592157)
You are misunderstaning how cloud storage works. Amazon/Google data is stored in 3-6 different disks, often in 2 or 3 different datacenters. If that data were lost due to physical failures, you would have much larger worries, like dust from a meteor blocking out the sun.
Re:Dumped by Google on Monday April 22, 2013 @06:33PM (#5592142)
Which is why everyone should have their own domain name, or have a contract with a reputable provider.

It's crazy to cede over ones entire identity to a free "best-effort" service.
