Re:Clear is a pox on America’s airports on Thursday December 22, 2022 @01:02AM (#34090318)
I frequently create a new account so that I can post freely. I always try to post substantively, though of course a reader may disagree with this self-assessment. Were new accounts required to wait if either:

1. Create a new account every so often, so that in the event that I see a topic I’d like to comment on, I’m not precluded.

2. Just not post.

Were 2 to apply to a great many people I fear HN would be worse off. And anyway committed assholes would just take door number 1.

Re:EU adopts global minimum 15% tax on big business on Friday December 16, 2022 @05:21PM (#34021350)
It’s weird that individuals are taxed on revenue but corporations are (usually?) taxed on profit.
If you model it as a lifetime annuity with inflation adjustment you are looking at more like 50k/year income at the outset were you to buy today.

My understanding is that annuities provide in general a worse return than the so called 4% rule on average.

Re:No Hello: A New Wave on Saturday December 10, 2022 @09:57AM (#33933134)
I can’t conceive of working in an environment where coworkers are enraged by minor communication differences. Like wow you just work with a bunch of assholes.

Probably that’s the thing to solve for, not “hello”, “query” vs “hello, query”.

Re:Stripe’s real pricing: a primer on Friday December 09, 2022 @12:27PM (#33923966)
If it costs 1 extra human to build everything you’re losing money leaving Stripe.
They use pass by value but objects are reference valued.
Re:Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder on Monday December 05, 2022 @10:34AM (#33866929)
This conversation is good evidence that ChatGPT does have a more or less average ability to reason. We’ve got humans making similar mistakes with 1 digit numbers.

(Or… are they human after all?)

Re:We Built Fly Postgres on Wednesday November 30, 2022 @06:49PM (#33809821)
Why spend a few hundred dollars when you can spend tens of thousands!
While there’s perhaps a “clear and present danger” distinction, I think this analogy is a good one because we are talking about similar interventions: nonviolent, easily overcome. No one’s gonna die from taking a cab home or missing out on the latest conspiracy theory.
Re:Can’t Hear What Actors Are Saying on TV? It’s Not You on Tuesday November 29, 2022 @06:14AM (#33786113)
I have no ADD whatsoever, but similarly find it difficult not to focus entirely on subtitles to the exclusion of all else.
I don’t know that this is a reasonable generalization. Certainly in my CS department one could write a thesis to receive an MS, and no MAs were offered. Just one data point, from a very large state school; YMMV.
In what way is it “greed” and not “how much houses cost”?
