If they answer yes to any of the following:

- Have you ever had to work on the weekend or well beyond 5pm outside of your own personal interest/initiative?

- Are we required to be on-call

If there's any hint of "nah, we don't really write tests because we just need to ship stuff, y'know"

Re:Ask HN: What are the pros and cons of long-term remote work? on Wednesday November 29, 2023 @12:55PM (#38462676)
Pros: No commute, no micro-management, so much free time to spend on hobbies or with family. Meetings tend to be more efficient since no-one wants to sit pointlessly on Zoom and those that go off on tangents are quickly shut down.

Cons: uhhhh... drawing a blank here. Maybe socializing with co-workers could be a thing that some people might miss?

Re:Taking Cannabis for Anxiety Probably Isn't Helping on Thursday October 26, 2023 @12:11PM (#38027658)
Paywalled... but thanks doc! who could have guessed that a drug with anxiety as a commonly known side effect is not good for treating anxiety.
Re:Are we heading for World War Three? on Thursday October 12, 2023 @02:21PM (#37860888)
Pretty much. I see no realistic path forward that will lead to any kind of de-escalation in the world. Everyone just keeps poking the sleeping bear and adding more and more straw to the camel's back.
I can't imagine anyone going home in a good mood after spending a day surrounded by people angrily shouting.
Re:Why didn't you buy a Tesla? on Tuesday January 03, 2023 @11:56AM (#34234069)
I like having the option to do a long distance road trip. It's easy to find gas stations and it only takes a minute to fill up. I rarely see charging stations and I doubt it can recharge in just a minute.
Re:Ask HN: How did you stop drinking? on Monday October 10, 2022 @11:14PM (#33159100)
I'll vouch for the seltzer water. Turns out I'm just addicted to drinking carbonated beverages that aren't sweet... not necessarily the beer/alcohol. A lot of non-alcoholic beers are getting to be pretty decent too. If you want to stay cheap, even a bud zero is surprisingly tolerable and totally fills the cravings for both carbonation and that refreshing beer taste. Between seltzer water and non-alcoholic beers, I've massively decreased my alcohol consumption and feel pretty great. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to cut back
You can always do a "cashless exercise"... assuming your options are actually worth something. Essentially it auto sells enough shares to cover the cost to exercise and leaves you with the rest.

yep, "things have started to take a toll" says it all.
Re:Ask HN: What would you be if you weren't a programmer? on Saturday July 09, 2022 @10:26AM (#32035392)
some form of engineering... maybe electrical
I'd like to see some concrete examples... but if it's truly in there -- good for them! It has absolutely no reason to be in a math textbook.
I've really been loving Prisma https://www.prisma.io/
Re:Ask HN: Should I get 14“ or 16” MBP for coding? on Sunday October 24, 2021 @04:23PM (#28981524)
Depends what you are doing. Is it portable or sitting on a desk? I have both a 13"(my personal device) and a 16" (work provided device). I would choose the 13 over the 16 any day. I absolutely hate lugging the 16 around. It's just way too massive.

Now if it's gonna sit on your desk and not move, 16 is probably fine and could buy you some screen real estate. That being said, if it's on your desk, you probably have an external monitor so real estate is not really an issue.

In the end, your choice. My preference is smaller over larger.

Re:Ask HN: Cheapest/easiest way to host a static site? on Friday March 26, 2021 @12:52PM (#26594267)
Netlify is really easy. Just drag and drop your static site's folder.
