Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:49PM (#50344326)
It gets really insane if you were to ask it if it could modify it's own weights like that.
And which countries shall run those 5?
The original demo was with a parkinsons sufferer but this clearance is for essential tremors - why the change?
Re:3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:24AM (#50043636)
I'd heard (from someone trying to use them) that net connections into the Chinese clouds was very busy in the days around the start of the war, so the suggestion is they have critical stuff mirrored there.
Re:Our $445M Series D on Friday October 09, 2026 @09:46AM (#50020480)
Congrats! Now it does get tricky - because once you tempt investors with a profit they start worrying about your spending and expect you to keep a profit.
Re:Sharing AI progress in mathematics on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @09:52PM (#49986989)
I'm curious if they'll find any fun crypto maths holes/bugs.
When do we get Bugs Bunny on the Enterprise ?
Re:Nobel Prize in Physics goes to Francis Halzen on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @09:18AM (#49978007)
Right, but for those they need to make/move/collect a large amount of transparent material, like heavy water etc for the particles to interact with. But they get that 'for free' with the ice.
This picture (with English text) has a bit of the detail showing their reflector structure, which is also in one of the pictures of your Japanese page:

Re:EDG C++ front-end goes public on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @04:21PM (#49913825)
It's got history! That's really unusual for moves to open-source; the dates on the earliest commits are in 1990 and they do go forward in time so that's really unusual to have that much history. I bet there's some fun stuff in there.
Re:Tcl/Tk 9.1 Released on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @08:59AM (#49908307)
Hey Donal, long time! Great to see you still involved.
Re:Tcl/Tk 9.1 Released on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @01:54PM (#49897525)
Tcl/Tk has got to be the easiest GUI system out there; you can get simple stuff going with no effort - nothing I've seen comes close to that simplicity.

Good to see it's getting some modern support.

What proportion of commercial LLM use is classification? I'm just wondering what happens to business AI spending/data centre usage when they realise they don't need full LLMs.
Oh that's a fun use - I'd heard some data centres were using fuel cells/mains-gas as a back up power source but using it as main power is interesting.
Real time processing of satellite imagery is one.
Re:Line Scan Photos from MUNI Heritage Weekend in San Francisco on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @01:05PM (#49804538)
They're great - I'm pleasantly surprised there's no blur on the people.
Re:The NASA/ESA Mars Sample Return mission has been canceled on Monday September 21, 2026 @08:51PM (#49795484)
I was hoping that MME would have solved the phobos->orbiter part :-); so then you just have to get mars->phobos - you don't have to get a rendezvous for that - you just have to land intact on phobos. You can try this a few times until you manage it; only once it's sitting on Phobos do you send the equivalent of MME to collect it.
Re:The NASA/ESA Mars Sample Return mission has been canceled on Monday September 21, 2026 @04:23PM (#49792873)
The Japanese 'Martian Moons exploration' mission is launching to Phobos next month and doing a sample return; how hard would a martian to phobos sample moving mission be that could then be collected off Phobos sometime?
Re:Salesforce Global Outage on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @11:12AM (#49728303)
What I'm curious about is why it is a single-PaaS; I'd have expected Salesforce to have the customers quite isolated so the chance of bringing down multiple customers at once was much smaller.
Re:Show HN: Pelican-bicycle alternatives (updated for 2026) on Monday September 14, 2026 @06:55PM (#49705387)
Yes; I found it fun they all decided telescopes should be repaired at night.
IMHO a bigger worry is if they were opening the case then they could have modified it for spying or changing contents. I'd have thought stuff like this should have case alarm notification and inventory change alerts.
Re:Ask HN: UK Rescue Rocket Sheds/Houses Information on Sunday September 06, 2026 @04:05PM (#49590333)
Have you tried the RNLI or lighthouses associations?
Re:AI Policy on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @01:59PM (#49539970)
I read that as dbus-hell and got confused.
Re:Pollen Robotics (Hugging Face) Microduck on Thursday August 27, 2026 @10:33AM (#49465566)
Oh so this is why Nvidia (edit: trying to buy)/bought Hugging Face, $1B for all the ai sharing and stuff, and $12B for the duck!
Re:Everything I own, owned on Sunday August 23, 2026 @07:54PM (#49413760)
The i2c over USB with no auth is just way way too common; I've also seen that on a device.
Re:Mythic's analog compute-in-memory architecture on Saturday August 22, 2026 @04:17PM (#49403442)
I'd assume it does some type of calibrate per device (regularly?) or the design is such that it's differential so things cancel out. Note it's also on 28nm for the analogue bits because yes it's harder.
They couldn't really - I doubt Iron Mountain actually objected to giving the data, but in the end it probably wasn't in a position to know what data belonged to PBS and what belonged to other clients of OSS and you'd get very worried if a data storage company gave a companies data to someone else without authorisation.
Re:A U.S. Strategy to Prevent the Creation of Mirror Life on Sunday August 16, 2026 @11:23AM (#49320915)
That was the belief - but it was found it was possible to grow E.coli on non-chiral molecules that are commonly available. The worry then is that the immune system will ignore the wrong-chirality infection.

Re:Chestnut – eGPU dock with open-source firmware on Sunday August 16, 2026 @10:41AM (#49320570)
This bridge - does it actually support host PCIe->thunderbolt->PCIe device - my reading of it is that it's just handling USB commands that the bridge is turning into separate PCIe commands to the GPU?
