trashface on Hacker News
It was sort of funny in a twisted way when I bought my $20K car from Carmax and they handed me one key. Still haven't managed to get a replacement...
Yes people were saying that since a year ago when Altman's deals with the memory companies were first announced.
If a company/person says "my tool is technically capable of X but I will not allow it be used in that way", that is unambiguously an ideology.
As someone already essentially living the simulated life, I believe the problem with MMOs is they aren't built to withstand the amount of time a person with nothing else to do can throw at them. So then they get boring, and I end up reading hacker news and making dumb comments, and asking claude inane questions, or generally trying to find other simulation-friendly way to spend my time (not interacting with people though, that is hard mode).
Still sounds like progress, in the before times it used to take _years_ to get to that point.
If I have any type its probably inattentive. Never taken stimulants. I was able to compensate for it without meds to an extent when I was younger - not perfectly but good enough to not get fired from most of the jobs I had. But now in middle age that no longer works. I like to call myself "early retired" now, certainly sounds better than being out of work for years.
I haven't been energetic about seeking stimulants because, well attention problems, but I hear there are shortages of the meds, they are a pain to refill (I can't even keep my non-controlled antidepressents going in the US system), and that docs nowadays don't really diagnose adults because they believe "it should have been diagnosed in childhood" even though the official pediatric diagnosis didn't show up in the DSM until I was 14. So close, but my parents who have their own issues _including_ attention problems, don't believe in mental health care.
You can freeze your credit with all 7 credit rating agencies (Experian, Equifax, Trans Union, and the 4 smaller ones whose names I always forgot) although that may not have protected this case because it is alleged Cash App does not pull your credit before opening an account.
Also opening a Cash App account yourself (even if you don't use it) is weak protection because they allow multiple accounts.
So if there as a defense I don't know what it is. Hope that identity fraud done with your info doesn't happen in a state with aggressive yet lazy/careless law enforcement.
Cash App sounds pretty scummy TBH
I'm just an unwashed linux user but I kind of like the icons for the days of the week, they seem funny and appropriate for each day.
Vision involvement should have qualified your son for antivenom. Sounds like good ol' US healthcare fuck up, again. Every time.
Could probably just get the source and have an LLM vibe code that, for personal use seems fine.
Why not? Access to birth control has never been better in most places, and they deserve some fun before we "adults" destroy their future and maybe their lives.
- Population declines until most of the cameras are just filming empty space all day with no human activity.
- Eventually cameras break and nobody (or no bots?) replace them because there wasn't anything interesting being recorded, so why bother
- Then the few people who remain start having sex in those now un-surveilled places
The problem with that is wait time. Sure if you can get into Penn, or a similarly extremely well known place, they are generally great, but can you get seen in time? They are _extremely_ backlogged for "normal" people. If you know someone or are a VIP, you can perhaps jump the line.
Had to make this calculus myself - was diagnosed with stage 0 melanoma, penn never returned my (multiple) phone calls. So I went with the local Moh's surgeon who removed it 3 weeks after diagnosis. Did I make the right call? I guess I'll find out in a few years
That screenshot is 800x600 - he probably wouldn't love software rendering at 320x240 which is what we actually had to run to get decent fps back in the day (late 90s). That was the the other big unlock of 3dfx voodoo, it could do 640x480 at 30 fps.
> We will bring the level of protection much closer to par with Windows, in the very near-term, using existing Linux features including signed kernel, signed kernel modules, and secure boot with attestation.
Yeah fuck that and fuck them for suggesting it. Do they even understand what running linux means?
I recall the old Doctor Who episode "vengeance on varos" was my first exposure as a kid to the then sci-fi concept of executions streamed for - the public benefit, I suppose? Really disturbing episode, rewatched it a few years back and yeah - still very disturbing. Not a good episode in other respects either, and it was harshly criticized at the time.
And now my country is implementing that for real.
I played all the ultimas (even ultima 2) except this one. I feel like I missed out. Oh well, spam spam spam humbug
That's why I'm reading this at 1:55AM local time! It definitely gets quieter, though, I'm in the suburbs so not that noisy to begin with. But now, no cars, animals outside mostly asleep (hear an owl sometimes), cell phone stops trying to scam me via voice and text messages, not even aircraft flying overhead (they start between 4-5 am, which is also when the first cars can be heard). Can hear my heartbeat in my ears. But my tinnitus is a lot louder. No job, so no need to get up early though I typically manage before noon.
I wouldn't say I "have ADHD" but I do have a what I call an "attention prioritization and low energy disorder" that nothing i've ever tried has helped. I hear stimulants might help, but never tried em, can't get em.
Napa and Sonoma are very high cost of living areas
Usage limit is - limiting. I may not notice the increased value of a more advanced model, but I will notice when I can't even use the service.
Maybe they are speeding up things that were not the bottleneck or don't matter. Or LLMs speed up the time to learn, "well this idea probably sucks actually", which is great, but in the end there is still no good idea. For software dev, it had already gotten pretty efficient before LLMs came around - the business of making software demanded it. There are still gains to be had no doubt, but many will have less impact.
I'm using claude to make gaming mod apps I never would have bothered to code before, but they have zero monetizable value. There is demand for sure, but somewhat ironically, copyright/IP/TOS law stands in the way. The thing which committed the biggest copyright infringement in human history lets me make another thing which I can't release because of copyright law. I'd get cease-and-desisted instantly if I did so.
I had a career for 18 years but I'm ready to leave programming behind. Its funny I never successfully learned Haskell, tried a couple times. Unlike probably most people here, programming was not something I felt was a "calling" - I started fairly late at age 17 or so and it seemed like a decent way to make a living, and that was sort of true for a while. But now in my early 50s, that is no longer even "sort of true" (no paid programming work for years now), so IMO its not useful for me to spend energy maintaining that skill. I still eyeball some of the code that Claude gives me, but that's about it.
Programming, at least for me, is rapidly going the way of the dodo bird. Time to spend what I managed to save for retirement, a bit earlier than I expected, hope it lasts.
In america nothing is getting built except data centers. Without the drug-addled AI push, we'd be in same spot as Europe, maybe worse.
> Which sounds sensible on the surface, until you realize that all military organizations have extensive experience with that exact question
Tell that to a certain school in Iran
I like plan mode personally. I only use claude code for the web, and the questions claude asks me to clarify are usually pretty important - mostly because I was too vague or contradictory in my prompt, or what I was asking for conflicted with something else in the code. I don't know how claude would resolve that without plan mode.
Also for session planning, as in when-can-I-walk-away-from-computer, its nice to know the particular rhythm of initial crunch - ask questions - make plan - do it. Especially with a 5 minute cache timeout.
That seem plausible. As a gamer and 3d aficionado since 3dfx voodoo 1, I've never owned a VR set and that was partly because the good ones, at least on paper, all seemed to be Meta products. I don't use any Meta products, although I am probably _used by_ Meta products, which is part of the reason I don't use them.
Now I'm getting older and have less interest in VR, certainly don't want augmented reality glasses, even if they could be used for gaming. If anything I want glasses that subtract reality, as its a little too much at times.
Various pharmacies in Canada will accept a US prescription and send you the medication via mail, usually at far cheaper than what you would pay for the same in the US.
This prevents it.
Another possibility is recession in next two years, but its brief enough that recovery starts before 2028 election - republicans take credit and voters believe it - JD Vance gets elected president.
I recall reading something from axios or similar, talking about how a CEO said a "nice light recession right now would be perfect for us" or something to that effect.
