Re:React Native for Windows and Mac on Tuesday May 12, 2020 @07:24PM (#23161324)
I've used React Native for a client and, whilst it was super clunky, I still enjoyed being able to write React to deploy to mobile. With React Native for Web, you can technical write code that writes to a bunch of different platforms, a big selling point for businesses.
Re:AWS services to avoid on Sunday May 10, 2020 @07:34PM (#23137308)
I've had an AWS account manager suggest to me to use Auth0 rather than Cognito for some scenarios as well.
Re:PWA Store on Thursday April 23, 2020 @11:36PM (#22964384)
I am not a fan of Material UI (and especially the Material UI library for React). It looks kinda gross and it's really difficult to customise.

Also, you've made a very common mistake of setting `outline: none` to your focus states! Very bad for people who navigate using a keyboard.

Good job on launching, by the way.

Re:Ask HN: Best Talks of 2019? on Sunday December 22, 2019 @05:44PM (#21860140)
This video by Mark Dalgeish got me really thinking about design systems from a developer of view.

I honestly prefer Laravel to Spring.

Flutter?
Anti-vaccination isn't exclusively an American phenomenon. It just seems like it because most commenters would be Americans or foreigners who live in bubbles. I remember in high school in Australia about a decade ago, there was one kid who was said innoculations were akin to "injecting garbage into your bloodstream".

I also frequently give blood in Australia and there are also more and more warnings about measles and stuff (interestingly regarding neighbourhoods that tend to vote very progressive).

Anecdotal evidence, however!

Re:Microsoft’s Resurgence Under Satya Nadella on Saturday February 02, 2019 @03:17AM (#19061851)
I'm super loyal to the Microsoft Basic mouse. It lasts forever whereas all the Logitech M100's that I've purchased (and I've purchased a lot of them) don't last more than 6 months. Sad!
Re:Office 365 is now on Mac App Store on Thursday January 24, 2019 @06:28PM (#18994097)
I use both Office for Mac and Windows all the time and Office for Mac is pretty reliable IMO. They pretty much have feature parity. Which features are you missing?
Re:A $1.2B law to boost US quantum tech on Sunday December 23, 2018 @01:47AM (#18744816)
Where is the funding going to come from?! As a non-American, I get worried by all this funding when America is in serious debt. :(
Re:Indian technology talent is flocking to Canada on Thursday December 20, 2018 @12:15AM (#18722670)
This is just an anecdotal alternative but a lot of my Australian co-workers are eschewing all the US political turmoil and are still choosing to emigrate to America.
Re:A new look for rust-lang.org on Thursday November 29, 2018 @05:48PM (#18564889)
Tabbing through the page is kinda annoying because they've set outline: 0 on all the buttons.
The company would create a new Google account for you.
Re:Brain Drain Within the EU? on Sunday September 23, 2018 @06:16PM (#18053595)
Can you tell the difference between American and British English speakers?
Re:Chinese Thesis Ghostwriting Scandal Reveals Huge Gray Market on Saturday September 22, 2018 @08:57PM (#18048820)
I didn't realise that there might've been a pattern! A lot of the Uber drivers I talk to in Australia also claim to do accounting on the side.
Re:Modern SAT solvers: fast, neat and underused on Saturday August 04, 2018 @04:37AM (#17685962)
Composer, the defacto package manager for PHP, uses a SAT solver. It's pretty interesting looking at the code!
Maybe should've used a different name.
I just want to raise a couple of points.

It's not necessarily always true that corporate donations are simply to bribe politicians into doing their bidding (which is what I took away when I read your commend). Companies will give money to politicians who are already aligned with their interests.

I watched a video once which tried to address the idea that Ted Cruz was being bribed by Comcast. Once of the arguments put forward was, sure, he may have received donations from some Comcast employees. However we shouldn't conflate that to mean Comcast was paying him money. Other politicians like Hillary and Bernie also would have received donations from Comcast employees.

Also, opponents of Net Neutrality actually do make some good points against the role of government in regulating the internet. Here's a debate where Nick Gillespie (a libertarian) and Michael Katz argue against Mitchell Baker and Tom Wheeler on whether NN is good. By the end of the debate, Nick and Michael are able to convince more people to consider opposing NN than to support:

Re:Ask HN: How did you become fluent in English? on Sunday April 08, 2018 @06:15PM (#16788798)
Most people use modern English translations of the Bible.
Re:Ask HN: How did you become fluent in English? on Sunday April 08, 2018 @06:08PM (#16788752)
As a native English speaker, sometimes I'll read a word but since I've never heard that word read out loud, when somebody finally says it, my mind explodes because it sounds different to how I pronounced it in my mind.
Re:BrewChain – NodeJS blockchain implementation on Friday December 08, 2017 @10:52PM (#15884189)
Blockchains are pretty lit. Here's another implementation in Node for comparsion.

Now that the US government has failed to act on climate change, it might be a good idea for US companies and individuals to take up the challenge.
Re:Magento eCommerce PHP Remote Code Execution on Tuesday April 21, 2015 @08:04AM (#9413426)
Magento is pretty old school. Things like patching will be much easier in Magento 2, which uses Composer for managing dependencies.
Re:Microsoft Announces Windows Support for the Raspberry Pi 2 on Monday February 02, 2015 @04:34AM (#8983407)
Sounds like it'll be painful to use. Imagine the lag!
Re:Material Design for Bootstrap on Saturday September 27, 2014 @11:43PM (#8378857)
I don't like the vertical align of the search input field.

Re:Large Round of Layoffs Expected at Microsoft on Wednesday July 16, 2014 @09:27PM (#8045541)
I knew Microsoft was on the way out but I didn't know the situation was so bad. Hopefully those who lost their jobs will find a place at Google or Apple.
Re:Paint.Net 4.0 is now available on Wednesday June 25, 2014 @06:32AM (#7943118)
I use Pinta at work. It's no Paint.NET.
Re:Running ASP.NET vNext on OS X and Linux on Monday May 26, 2014 @09:06PM (#7802344)
Thanks.
Re:Running ASP.NET vNext on OS X and Linux on Monday May 26, 2014 @07:08PM (#7802073)
Disappointing article. A console application isn't ASP.NET.
