Re:ACF Plugin no longer available on WordPress.org on Monday October 14, 2024 @04:09AM (#41835319)
No one should risk an unknown entity taking illegal control of a key plugin on their site. I can't imagine anyone wanting WP.org to weaponize more plugins on their site.

Update ACF and stay secure against this latest threat. https://www.advancedcustomfields.com/blog/installing-and-upg...

Re:Leaving WordPress (.org or WPF, still unsure which one) on Thursday October 10, 2024 @07:25AM (#41797738)
But none of his actions are sensible if he just wants to defend it. He's done more damage than WP Engine ever did.

The argument that WP Engine is trying to mislead people is weak at best. We're seriously saying that talking about WordPress hosting was misleading? To whom? What about every other host that does this?

Also considering the current deliberately misleading state of .com/.org/Automattic/Matt/the foundation etc, I really think they could do a lot to lead by example there before going this unnecessarily nuclear to others. I don't believe it because the reaction is totally out of line with the issue.

Re:WP Engine is not WordPress on Monday September 23, 2024 @04:00AM (#41623526)
Why is the .org mouth speaking with the .com's words?

This is nothing more than commercially focused.

Might be a weird question, but what sort of consultancy opportunities do you get? I have worked for a long time in a design and development agency and I (think) I saw very little opportunity or demand for consultancy.

To the point where I legitimately don't know who or in what situation all these businesses are that are spending so much money on 'consultancy'. When do these businesses seek consultants and what for? I know that might be a far reaching question, so any examples would be appreciated.

A fair point. I'm not sure stability and freedoms generally always increase along the same line here. You can definitely increase stability while stifling freedoms. Not that they necessary directly correlate, but I imagine one way to cheaply and quickly gain some level of temporary stability is to stifle freedoms.
I know you're being facetious, but you actually prove the point well. I wonder what that % was 10, 20, 30, 50 years ago. I wonder which direction it's going?

But no I'm sure it would be far better if we banned such heretic thoughts and enforced our worldview.

I could see some irony in this.
You make a good point but you can't in the long term fight against this in a healthy way by stifling peoples access to information. Some people seem to hold the worldview that they know the right answers and must protect the simpletons from the wrong ones, where others would like to make all information available and trust in people to eventually form sensible solutions.
I'm not sure how anyone holds this opinion. Do you really believe that this will result in fair, unbiased reporting? Who is the long-term great arbiter not only of the news but removal of non-news?

I'm also not sure why your worldview seems to be that given access to all opinions, the stupidest ones too, people will not and cannot learn to make informed judgements for themselves. You will see some stupidity but it's a very bleak and arrogant worldview to presume that people are incapable of making rational decisions given information and time.

The masses....? I think you've lost it a bit here.
Re:Love Hurts on Wednesday September 23, 2020 @04:02AM (#24564277)
Are you saying that "so many" men were accidentally raping as there was no implicit consent? That's ridiculous. As the article alludes, sex is not a scary and horrible minefield, and the idea of consent shouldn't be overused and watered down to apply to every difficult situation.

You're describing power within an industry, not our culture. You are for no reason attributing the action of a few to many. Which is sexist.

Looks good but pre-order only? How have you been using it?
I get a message that reads: "Paperspace.app" can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.

This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.

It's not the normal open security settings and allow message.

I am on a MacBook pro running Catalina 10.15.3.

Looks quite interesting. I could really use a Windows box that I could use for a few games while I'm isolated not at home with only my Macbook Pro.

I'm actually really glad to have seen this and the comments. This has something I've been prattling on about to anyone who will listen for the last couple of years now. Glad to be somewhat vindicated!

Re:#FFFFFF Diversity on Friday October 16, 2015 @04:34AM (#10398124)
"I can’t support a conference that doesn’t seem to understand the value and importance of intersectionality and representation."

Doesn't this just promote the idea that people of different ethnicities really are that different? Why on earth is skin colour "representation" an important factor anywhere? I mean don't discriminate but how is this an argument?

This just promotes the wrong idea that people of different ethnicities bring drastically different things to the table in one breath, and argues that race or gender do not affect technical ability with the next.

How this insane person has people listening to them or why a completely backwards article on the right site gets linked here is beyond me.

Re:Mirror Your Android Screen to the TV with Chromecast on Thursday July 10, 2014 @04:33AM (#8014188)
Does it bring up a phone and display apps as they would appear on a phone? Or do you just get a fullscreen, list of apps etc? I just basically want a bigger, 1 to 1 direct display of my phone on the screen for demonstrating and testing apps. Anyone know if this is possible with Chromecast?
Re:Google outed me on Thursday January 23, 2014 @09:24AM (#7108293)
Yeah things like that are a good way to immediately discredit any other content you had, regardless of its legitimacy.

I also read the word "triggering". A term I can never seem to figure out in it's context. It seems some people believe they (at least ought to) exist in some Utopian society where everyone should know what may upset everyone else (even in the slightest way) and endeavour to avoid at all costs. I mean it's maybe a nice concept on the whole, but the over intricate levels these people take it to are ridiculous.

The whole article smacks of entitlement. Simplifying a name, or even a gender is not a personal attack or an attempt at discrimination, it's just in truth a simple system. If you use ten names and five genders, then why the hell should things like this cater to you? Not specifically to ignore you, but if everyone has these over indulgent massively personal requirements then all cannot be fulfilled.

I'm sure there are people in the same situation that haven't had this problem, so how it isn't user error is beyond me. It's a free service...

This was my immediate thought.

It doesn't read like the (somewhat stereotypical) male character they're describing. It's portrayed as some cocky male who frequents 4chan having a deep and heartfelt revelation about the plight of women.

But I wouldn't expect anything on that site to not be biased.

Very fast and lose use of the word 'indisputable'.

There's an annoying yet pitiful complete ignorance in calling your site 'educate-yourself.org'.

Re:Don't tell me how to enable JavaScript on Friday April 13, 2012 @10:01AM (#3836727)
I have to agree with this somewhat. I can run through and disable various features in my browser, that's my prerogative. But I can't then expect other people to cater to my specific set up. If I am deny myself what is undeniably quite a key feature on the modern web, I must live with the outcome and accept that I will miss content.

There definitely is a good argument for catering to those who cannot use some features, like Flash, but to those imposing these restrictions upon themselves, you know how to solve it.

I consider myself fairly "tech-savvy" as well and have not seen more reasoning behind turning JS off than for leaving it on.
