News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Because it is neither. It is just a mindless generative model. It’s “brilliance” or “idiocy” is just random variation of an unaware algorithmic process.

Games also don’t treat physics like physics… they are games.
Re:Ask HN: Are iPhones designed to last for a couple of years? on Wednesday November 30, 2022 @06:12AM (#33799222)
What are you talking about with “highly reduced battery”? My iPhone is almost five years old, latest version of iOS, it works fine.
It is perfectly valid, just less interesting as a critique. This is well-trod ground, journalistically. If writing about it were actually going to change anything, it would have already. As it stands, writing about it now is just a shrewd way to sell copy to people who like think that reading about something is the same as “taking action” against it.

Re:Ask HN: When should you leave a company? on Sunday November 27, 2022 @04:41PM (#33767285)
You want to leave so you can maximize for learnings, but you’re worried you will leave before properly learning what you are doing? Those are conflicting ideas.

Sounds like you’re chasing something, but you don’t really know how to recognize you’ve gotten it. Figure that out. The rest will follow.

Re:The modern web on a slow connection on Sunday November 27, 2022 @04:31PM (#33767207)
The modern web is almost unusable even on a fast connection. The entire “profession” of web development is a disgrace. There is no excuse for how poorly implemented much of the web is.
Re:Temporal Programming, a new name for an old paradigm on Sunday November 27, 2022 @04:20PM (#33767094)
Property 2 implies immutable state. I also used to think that was a great idea. Then I tried actually programming that way.
Use whatever works. Slides work for most people.

Thing is, it’s not interesting.

Re:WTF Keep Building in Crypto on Wednesday November 23, 2022 @02:17PM (#33723392)
Call me crazy, but if crypto were actually useful, then more people would, you know, use it.

The problems crypto “solves” can already be solved with existing tech. The fact that some of those problems aren’t being solved by existing tech either means people don’t actually care about the problems, or that there are non-technical barriers in place to solving the problems.

Either way, there’s no there there for crypto.

I did this. What made it possible was two years worth of savings, a very understanding wife, and chronic sleep deprivation. It’s possible, just don’t be stupid about it.

Your mileage may vary.

“Today's audiences are attached to brands more than ever.”

Got any actual data to back up that claim, or is that just what it “feels” like to you? Maybe before making broad assertions about what’s ailing consumers, reality check your assumptions first.

Re:Ask HN: Is everyone on Hacker News super charismatic? on Saturday November 05, 2022 @06:25AM (#33479990)
That’s the impression you get?? I read HN and more often than not think, “man, these people sound like insufferable pseudo-intellectual know-it-alls.”
Re:Tell HN: Musk's Twitter Plan is Proceeding as Stated on Friday November 04, 2022 @07:17PM (#33475442)
The world would be a better place if everyone just stopped paying attention to both Musk and Twitter.
You sound like a spoiled child. Don’t complain that people aren’t giving you free and complete access to their work. They made it, they decide how it gets released. If you think it should be done differently, then you do it.
Problem: cloud computing is hurting the environment.

Solution: a new cloud computing service to add on top of your existing cloud computing services.

Brilliant.
