They will then need to find an pay those mods.
Re:Reddit Doubles Down on Tuesday June 13, 2023 @09:51PM (#36320360)
Who is going to mod it.. couple reddits that I follow daily are public again, however there are no new posts as mods stopped accepting anything.

I am genuinely curious how this is going to work going forward.

Kids learn A LOT from being left alone, if them being left alone results in TikTok daily binge.. well it is time to do something about that. Parents can not supervise their kids 24/7 they need some time to themselves and making a living.

The "frowned upon" part is why you really need to be picky about where you live. Having kids spend time with friends roaming the neighbourhood without morons calling cops or child services is a priceless benefit to them.

Computers we had access to did not have ML generated crack being served by every app on them. Even so I had addiction issues, thank god this was before ML.

And no I did not have access to my parent's bar to drink vodka and brandy whenever I felt like as a 12 year old to "prepare me to real world".

Re:The last days of a 350-year-old family farm on Tuesday May 09, 2023 @11:19PM (#35883255)
There is a lot of discussion about prices, weather etc. but the key here is that their family died out. Being 80 and 74 and the only ones running the farm..

Re:Mark Twain's two-week stint as a Confederate soldier on Sunday April 16, 2023 @10:17PM (#35596183)
This is just factually incorrect.

"In the Middle Ages when the feudal lords . . .concluded to enlarge their domains, to increase their power, their prestige and their wealth they declared war upon one another. But they themselves did not go to war any more than the modern feudal lords, the barons of Wall Street, go to war."

Feudal lords most definitely went to war, died in those wars, their who families were exterminated in those wars. This was the case everywhere in the world, from England to Japan.

In the end you can protest all you want but when dudes with guns show up, they care not about it. They will take your stuff, they will rape your wife and daughters, they will murder your sons and you. That is the history of humans from WAY before any feudal lords.

Because "Racial achievement gap" sounds a lot better and gets more $$ for panels, committees, researchers, administrators, unions and co. Then "Yes we still suck at teaching math please give us more $$"
Interesting examples of what he thinks it is helpful with. For example the API one, how do you know that it did not make up the decorator example out of thin air and it is not garbage? You have to google it or know it beforehand(he probably knew it already).

For me the cognitive load of second guessing everything is just too painful.

He was a really interesting, good guy. Getting stabbed by some filth.

Fucking shithole of a city. In the last 10 years every time I am there I can't help but wonder HOW??? How can such rich city with so much potential be turning into this?? I grew up in east Europe, in general few places in US trigger my prep for fight or flight.. SF you are having a nice conversation, walk wrong way 50meters and suddenly my heart goes to 170bpm. I started carrying a collapsible baton last time I had to stay there for business. SF is going full Detroit, 100% self inflicted.

Re:Pairing with GPT-4 · Fly on Friday March 31, 2023 @11:06AM (#35388206)
It all sounds like a very well orchestrated marketing campaign, HN would be the first place I would seed with stories if I was promoting it as a dev tool.

I spent few hours asking to do few things with a well documented public but uncommon api. It sent me on a wild goose chase of functionality that API never had..(contacted developer to make sure I am not crazy). It wrote some stuff that looked VERY good, except for the fact that it interacted with things that were never there. Would have been nice if they were..

It seem to exercise wishful thinking. You can ask it to implement functionality and it will just imagine that API/system has stuff needed.

Major problem is that I for one have no clue how it is "thinking" maybe over time we will develop better understanding of it.

In terms of damage to kids pandemic was a self inflicted wound, we did it to them. COVID was as deadly to kids as your normal flu if not less. We fucked them to save some 60+ year olds

Future uncertain.. which period of history was it certain? Great Depression? WW2? Nuclear civil defence drills during Cold War? Maybe the great times during 19th century and civil war? That is just in US in Europe and Asia each of those was FAR worse.

Clearly kids need to be taught some actual history without the rose coloured filters. Couple weeks each covering 30 years war, Boxer Rebellion, Holodomor, Holocaust, Khmer, Great Leap Forward should help cheer everyone up. It can be worse A LOT x100 worse.

I think it is more of a coincidence. It is was not and is not KGB fault that US colleges are filled with every stripe of "ist" from your garden variety Maoist to Trotskyiest to some normalized now America is DEVIL repent NOW types. Whoever was responsible for what he says if he is still alive is probably completely dumfounded by Americans taking down Lincoln statues and destroying monuments to abolitionists who fought against slavery. I mean holy shit did we do KGB good job or what? (for the record I do not think they had anything to do with it, empire rots from the core)
Re:The Weapons That Win World Wars on Tuesday February 28, 2023 @10:16PM (#34978333)
Ukraine was supplied with an insignificant amount of weapons before 2022. Their kit was basically USSR kit plus some new things like Stugna, lase guided shells, distributes artillery control app etc

If Ukraine had couple brigades of Lepards, HIMARS and few hundred 777 at the start of the war, this all would have went a lot differently. Alas lesson here is simple under no condition do you give up nukes.

Re:Ask HN: Are people still using Pascal in 2023? on Sunday February 26, 2023 @08:19PM (#34951818)
Isn't it incredible that now in 2023 web is still this bad? One of the biggest online outdoor retailer websites breaks catastrophically in fully updated Safari on Mac.. been going on for month. By catastrophically I mean you get a blank white screen with ui flashing in out. And this is normal, I find something like that regularly, stopped bothering sending bug reports years ago.

It blows my mind.. really it does, how did we not fix this shitshow? We have automated test on top of automated test on top of automated tests but web is so messed up we still can't have shit working reliably.

They have not found the origin of the virus after testing every animal they could possibly test.. what was being done in the lab is still hidden => most likely it came from the lab.

So the deadliest epidemic since Spanish flu has been caused by gain of function research supported in part by US, with people responsible in control of fighting the pandemic when it started. Said people then labeled leak theory a conspiracy theory and tried to suppress it. If there is any justice in the world they should all be dragged in front of the judge and spend rest of their life in a cell. But there isn't and they attached themselves to useful political masters who will protect them.

Most likely there is in nicer schools. There are social groups around swim competitive clubs, ski race teams, hockey teams, ball hockey, summer long duration live in camps etc.

In many ways hanging out with kids who are banned from social media is hanging out with kids from a pretty exclusive club. This is why unless you homeschool it is REALLY worth it to put your kids into school where parents are from a similar group as you are.

Re: on Wednesday February 08, 2023 @04:20PM (#34715360)
He is right that sonar buoy detonation thing sounds like absolute bullshit. Incredibly risky and 17 hours.. I mean you want to do this, send a submarine, it fires few torpedoes. No more pipeline. Fast, simple, reliable.

Let's say I am a Ukranian patriot, with few million in the bank. I bet given few month I could put together a team of divers to plant some C4 with a simple timer and blow this thing to hell. Or Polish patriot, or Polish government or any of the Baltic states. It is an existential struggle for all of them, and russkie understand one thing and one thing only, this was a very clear communication straight to Putin.

Re: on Wednesday February 08, 2023 @04:08PM (#34715193)
Because without a collaboration of some sort this reads like a planted story.

Source with this degree of knowledge would have no issue providing lots of things that could be confirmed through other means. Documents, names, precise dates and times. Who was in charge of this on Norwegian side? On CIA side.. when and where did they meat etc etc etc

Re:UK: Excess deaths in 2022 among worst in 50 years on Tuesday January 10, 2023 @07:50AM (#34324049)
He is suggesting that that vaccines had no effect on reducing spread, which they did not. They kinda like flu booster shot. Could maybe reduce symptoms, but we are not even sure of that at this point.

Vaccinating kids or anyone under 40 for that matter was wrong, period.

Re:Twitter restored ElonJet account on Wednesday December 14, 2022 @09:56PM (#33994558)
People are salivating about someone murdering Musk. He really should hire best private security money can buy and stop all public appearances for at least couple years.

The way it is going some antifa type will off him sooner or later.

Re:America’s School Districts Are Too Big on Thursday December 01, 2022 @09:32PM (#33825996)
Parents dump the schools with teachers who are members of the union. Union has less money to pay the politicians of a certain party. Of course boards also get paid per student head, student who goes to a school that is not part of that farm (charter, private whatever..) is not bringing in the cash.

It is pretty straightforward economic self interest. I can recommend Sowell's book "Charter schools and their enemies" it lays out the setup quite well.

Re:Alexander the Great in Firdawsi's Book of Kings on Tuesday November 08, 2022 @11:17AM (#33520649)
I forgot almost all of the movie but the portrayal of the Gaugamela is breathtaking. They could do better job with Persian equipment.. but Alexander's cavalry action was awesome to see. Also it showed well just how terrifying phalanx advance was. I was reading Xenophon recently and I thought it did awesome job showing why most other troops just ran when confronted with that.
Good to know, a noose and a quick drop would have been better but alas we have to read his drivel. Oh he got a 6 pack now how nice.
And nowhere on the page is the name of the person he murdered.
Re:Intel and the $1.5trn chip industry meltdown on Tuesday October 18, 2022 @09:59PM (#33256528)
Putin called he needs your brilliant strategic advice. 1 week to Kyiv or was it 2 days? I can't recall. This kind nationalistic PRC BS is how they will start a war, get defeated than have another civil war with 100 million dead.
Re:Intel and the $1.5trn chip industry meltdown on Tuesday October 18, 2022 @11:35AM (#33248946)
They can't, not even remotely close any time in the next 20 years at least. Can you imagine what a landing beach would look like being pounded by drone spotted artillery? See war in Ukraine. Forget the approach, anti ship missiles, mines, sheer volume of logistics needed. Stepping on the landing beach is a suicide without absolutely astronomical advantage in air power and ability to suffer huge attrition, even then.. 155mm hidden under camo/thermal nets, DJI drone rigged with magazines of small bombs.. Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kherson Childs play, this would make Diep and Galipoli look like walk in the park.

I would go as far as to say that US Army + Marines + Navy could not land on Taiwan without suffering multiple brigades of attrition AFTER at least a year long blockade and air campaign. It is that hard.

PRC has to surpass US in GDP, then spend 10-20 years of US level military spending, then maybe.

Re:The Real War 1939-1945 (1989) on Friday October 14, 2022 @02:03PM (#33206808)
The introduction seems questionable. Practically in every category that counted Americans were ahead. Artillery The God of War, number of tanks vastly outnumbering Germans and Sherman was as good as PzIV, Airpower, motorized transport. Most importantly logistics Americans had food, clothing, fuel. The way that intro is written it sounds like he is talking about Finland vs USSR ;)
Re:Failing Intro Economics on Monday October 03, 2022 @09:55AM (#33067551)
This is why going back to Math is always the way. Out of 100 students in Econ 101. How many can read a problem and setup then solve a simple linear system? Forget it how many can solve a linear system

Old professor I had in university would do a Math quiz in the first class, with disclaimer on the paper: If you find this hard save your money and drop out. Just some basic Algebra. Tenure and teaching for 30 years, he genuinely did not give a fuck. Of course lots of people would skip first class due to their O week..

Same epic prof would give exactly same tests year to year with 2-3 number changed around.. then fail everyone who provided answers from a wrong year. You would think people would learn or word would get passed down.. nope.
