Re:Introducing Meta Quest 3 on Thursday June 01, 2023 @10:53AM (#36151872)
Yep, for me its also just flight and race sim. Even though I don't really tend to use it very often anymore. It's cumbersome to wire up and especially in the summer the G2 gets very hot - plus the added heat of the PC driving this beast!
Re:Silver Lake to buy Germany's Software AG in $2.42B deal on Wednesday April 26, 2023 @05:47AM (#35711394)
Consider this anecdata. My car got stolen recently and I had to fill out a 40 pager for my insurance claim. Of course, they sent it as a PDF, yet I had to fill and print to send via snail mail. Of course, with another 20 pages of copies about inspections, overall history of the car and photos.

A week later the police sent me another 40 pager to fill via snail mail. Where I had to fill exactly the same information by hand - again send it back with the same 20 pages about inspections and so on. Of course, the insurance needs to be kept up to date with the latest information the police receives, so I had to copy the whole thing and sent it to the insurance again.

If you don't call that bureaucracy, I don't know what qualifies as such. I don't even talk about the process of unregistering the car, which is another similar story.

I had similar vibes from an email I got from a recruiter stating:

> -- all outgoing emails from ACMECORP are virus checked by the newest version of WINDOWS DEFENDER --

Interesting, my first take was that it's like contrastive divergence in Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs). There's also a chapter for that.
Re:A fake job offer gone wrong on Saturday December 10, 2022 @12:29AM (#33930181)
I was waiting the whole time for a request to buy some Google Play gift cards at the nearest store.
Re:Software horror show: SAP Concur on Monday December 05, 2022 @02:59AM (#33862778)
I don't think so, I vaguely remember Concur was a big monolith with a huge MSSQL server in the back. I highly doubt they can just rip it out and replace it with HANA and "forget" the sorting. There's a good reason Concur is in Bellevue right next to MSFT, it's a really big .NET shop.

This sorting by country and city never worked, it didn't work during my time at Microsoft in 2014 (they replaced it with their own mstravel tool thankfully), nor did it work at SAP in 2018. I frequently travelled from Berlin to Walldorf (in Germany obviously) and it always picked Berlin in Arizona (IIRC?) first. Walldorf it eventually got right, but I do strongly believe somebody just hacked this into first place in the frontend.

Re:Azure has run out of compute. Anyone else affected? on Friday November 25, 2022 @11:39AM (#33744092)
Yep, it's run by the Telekom entirely IIRC from my time back at MSFT. Microsoft "just deploys" Azure on it.
Re:Introducing Notion AI on Wednesday November 16, 2022 @10:44AM (#33624979)
It's also a matter of vocabulary and writing about your knowledge. It's almost impossible to find somebody that solved the same problem you currently have, because somebody that solved it didn't write about it. We're kinda OK searching code nowadays, but we're not able to discover architectures or abstractions properly.
Re:Nightdrive on Friday September 23, 2022 @06:39AM (#32950115)
somebody already opened a PR for that: https://github.com/jes/nightdrive/pull/2
Re:“Return to Monkey Island” is out today on Monday September 19, 2022 @02:30PM (#32902047)
They just opened up the tech support forum [1]. Several people are complaining about it taking too much CPU, but luckily you can turn the wattage down and limit the FPS to alleviate that problem.

Re:Kagi/Orion status update: First three months on Thursday September 01, 2022 @11:43AM (#32678071)
Actually, I meant both. The junk domain part is also easily solved in Kagi with Website ranking adjustment and blocking.
Re:Kagi/Orion status update: First three months on Thursday September 01, 2022 @11:15AM (#32677566)
I can't stress how much better Kagi is than Google, I'm a paying user. No more scrolling through tons of ads. Filtering by time and language is great, no more GitHub and Stackoverflow clones in the result. Thank you, I actually haven't realized how small Kagi still is, given how polished that product already is.
Re:What's the big deal about embedded key-value databases? on Wednesday August 24, 2022 @11:49AM (#32581039)
Thank you! And thanks for all the stargazers :) Let me know if you have any issues, happy to help and fix things if necessary.
I'm sure you can save another line while checking for mückenstiche in your dictionary.
Re:Amazon’s Roomba deal is about mapping your home on Monday August 08, 2022 @12:56PM (#32388016)
I would really love to hack those old models, eg add a raspi on top with a camera for proper object detection.
Re:GTA GeoGuesser on Wednesday July 06, 2022 @06:11AM (#31998891)
yeah I was also surprised about myself, first pin I set on the map was only 20m away from the real location.
Re:SplinterDB: High performance embedded key-value store on Saturday May 28, 2022 @05:07PM (#31543866)
Why write anything to disk if you can just store it in an array?
Re:SplinterDB: High performance embedded key-value store on Saturday May 28, 2022 @03:50PM (#31543178)
Checkout the limitations first, no fsync and no data recovery makes this of very little use. I wonder what makes you write a kv store without this from the start.
Re:Explain the first 10 lines of Twitter's source code to me on Friday February 25, 2022 @03:10PM (#30471780)
> Another interesting point is that Chrome can load utf-8 documents as utf-8 without a metatag if it's a file:// URL. I guess conceptually this is because local files can't specify the encoding in HTTP headers or something?

You can guess the encoding after reading a few bytes from the request. Checkout universalchardet from Mozilla or the equivalent Java port: https://github.com/albfernandez/juniversalchardet

By the time the meta tag is parsed, you almost always know the right encoding already.

how do you know the threads need to communicate with each other?
If you run into contention issues have you tried scaling horizontally? Running on 128 single core VMs should mitigate what you see.
If you're interested to play around with those concepts mentioned in the blog, I built a small go library here: https://github.com/thomasjungblut/go-sstables
Re:Managing People on Monday February 07, 2022 @05:58AM (#30243062)
You'd be surprised how many folks (many people on bluecard visas) take such severance "offer" without any legal consultation. Many tech immigrants in Germany do not know of their worker rights.
Re:Are popular toxicity models simply profanity detectors? on Tuesday January 25, 2022 @03:37AM (#30069624)
That reminds me of a time where we had the substring "prd" in our Azure Storage Accounts. The MSFT profanity filter thought it meant fart in Czech, where we used it as a moniker for production. Ever since then the accounts were named with the substring "prod".
Re:The implementation of the UK Covid-19 dashboard on Monday January 24, 2022 @02:35AM (#30054573)
Indeed it was edited, it said EU before. Europe makes even less sense, there is no centralized public procurement in all of Europe.
Re:The implementation of the UK Covid-19 dashboard on Sunday January 23, 2022 @08:00AM (#30045837)
The UK isn't part of the EU anymore.
Re:Kagi: A Premium Search Engine on Friday January 07, 2022 @07:01AM (#29838096)
Agreed, I'm also very happy so far and only had to use !g twice so far.

Interestingly enough I haven't actually seen that much cross-language results (also DE/EN), even for ambiguous queries.

Indeed, I'm very happy with kagi so far
Re:All Bitcoin private keys are on this website on Tuesday December 21, 2021 @08:38AM (#29637234)
it's the maximum private key https://github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum/blob/master/crypto/c... - so the public key is actually just a example and not the real public key for that private key.
Re:All Bitcoin private keys are on this website on Tuesday December 21, 2021 @07:41AM (#29636801)
wow, the private key with 10.28 eth can't be imported anywhere. The others work and are already being emptied. One way to lose your money for sure.

EDIT: the aforementioned wallet can also be found as the 0x00 wallet on the very first page. Interesting collision?

EDIT2: it's hardcoded https://github.com/SjorsO/keys-generator/blob/master/ethereu...
