Re:Anecdotally, Programmers Dislike "Reduce" on Monday September 21, 2026 @05:46PM (#49793891)
The reason to prefer reduce over for or while loops is because procedural loops mutate state defined in higher scopes in the program, making reasoning harder and introducing all kinds of opportunities for tricky bugs.

I like reduce, and I’ve never gotten pushback for using it. I’d be willing to use other functional method chains. But I would never listen to anyone who suggested using a procedural loop instead.

I’m 62. Same. The huge productivity jump is exciting. But the real gold is removing all the mechanical pain of typing, navigating files, grinding through library docs and many other grunt level tasks. Now I can stay in higher cerebral plane.
Some might say that optimization (how quickly and efficiently people are killed) is THE thing about war. I mean, aren't nukes the ultimate optimization?
Wait, you think these autonomous killer robots will only fight each other? Are you kidding?
Can anyone see how autonomous robot armies are different than nukes in their deterrent potential?
Imagine thinking this would go any different under any Harris or whoever. The war party gets its way.
Search: [ Altman 0/0 ]
TL;DR - Sam Altman gets to build the mass surveillance distillers and autonomous killer robots.

The petroyuan faces a big problem, which is lack of trust in the CCP to preserve its value.

As mentioned, there’s also mounting dissatisfaction and distrust in the petrodollar, but the devil you know…

Re:App Subscription is now my Weekend Project on Thursday January 29, 2026 @02:01PM (#46814843)
If you’re paying more to get it cheaper, then prima facie, you were not being exploited. You were being offered convenience.
This reinforces my standard explanation of Claude Code: Claude is exactly like a junior engineer who is simultaneously brilliant and retarded.

It can do great things but needs close supervision. Claude doesn’t write code, Claude recommends code.

> how soon before we start designing codebases for LLM agents to navigate more cleanly?

In my (so far limited) experience, the best thing you can do is establish and consistently follow patterns in you handwritten code.

I find Claude does really well with “follow existing conventions and patterns” or pointing to some specific part of the app and saying “do it that way.”

I prompt Claude the same way I would a junior dev, and that seems to work really well so far.

Yes. No one knows where the top is in term of demand for software engineering. Software continues to eat the world with no end in sight.
Re:Ask HN: AI Replacing Engineers – Firsthand Stories? on Wednesday April 30, 2025 @06:32PM (#43851446)
Excellent breakdown. Software engineering will be automated end-to-end around the same time as doctors and lawyers.
Re:What If We Made Advertising Illegal? on Saturday April 12, 2025 @01:04AM (#43661513)
This is the exact type of thinking, this type of casual totalitarian social engineering, that led to the invention on the guillotine.
Re:The average college student today on Friday April 04, 2025 @12:26PM (#43584689)
A big part of this is that too many kids are going to college. Less than 2/3 who begin a 4-year degree program will graduate.

We’re pushing kids who are not suited to higher education into it because of credential inflation. As more kids get a certain level of credential, others are forced to seek those credentials to keep up. It’s a tragically wasteful way to signal fitness to employers.

This has been spurred on by government loan guarantees and other means of assistance, which create demand, which drives prices up. The universities don’t escape blame here. The author is getting these ludicrous pep talks from administration because they must play the charade to keep business booming. Nothing more. They’re selling a crap product to people who don’t benefit from it.

Re:The average college student today on Friday April 04, 2025 @12:10PM (#43584487)
Then what a tragic misuse of societal resources. A simple IQ test would be a better signal to employers than a massively overpriced four year charade.
Re:They Might Be Giants Flood EPK Promo (1990) [video] on Friday March 28, 2025 @11:35AM (#43506732)
I saw their Flood tour. Variety Playhouse Atlanta 1990.

No band, just the two of them. Plus the metronome, and some prerecorded backup here and there.

Re:A Letter to the American People on Friday March 07, 2025 @07:02PM (#43296166)
“18F was doing exactly the type of work that DOGE claims to want – yet we were eliminated.”

Witness how “this type of work” is actually done. You’ve been claiming to “do this type of work,” yet even in this most earnest appeal “to the American people” you don’t bother to cite one single accomplishment that might make we the people sympathetic.

Thumb twiddling whiners. Good riddance.

You can eat as much meat and tropical fats as it takes to satisfy, and you WILL lose weight and regain metabolic health. The catch is, you gotta ditch most of the carbs.
No one ever knew this until government TV told us! Thanks!

Government TV goes MAHA!

Re: on Wednesday July 24, 2024 @07:05PM (#41063144)
Your problems sound rooted in physical and health issues. Try this:

- Cut out carbs. Start with a month of full keto, then dial it in. The goal is a constant energy level, no feeling sleepy or hungry, no brain fog. Intermittent fasting can help, even just skipping breakfast a couple days a week. This is all achievable, and it’s easier than you think. The goal isn’t weight loss, but if you’re overweight, you will slim down.

- Cut out seed oils. The oils themselves are bad, but also they tend to be plentiful in the absolute worst trash foods.

- Get some kind of exercise every day, and not just aerobic. You need some type of upper body strength development.

- Attend to your posture. Get a stand up desk, and stand more than you sit. I’m a fan of Alexander Technique, which teaches good posture and how to avoid poor use of your body. You can find a coach in your area.

- Attend to your breathing. If you’re mouth breathing, train yourself to nose breath. There’s a good book out now called “Breath” by James Nestor.

Positive rights don’t exist because they are simply claims on other people’s labor.
Awesome. I could have explained why macroeconomic modeling is futile and stupid, but so much more effective to demonstrate it!
Re:Why Children Need Risk, Fear, and Excitement in Play on Tuesday March 05, 2024 @10:03PM (#39611814)
We just spent three years telling kids to view the breath of other humans as poison.

If this is reactionary, bring it on.

I’m starting to see a lot more free ranging kids in my neighborhood. White pill.

To get credit for fixing a problem that never happened, usually you need to make things a lot worse.
Check out the documentary Poverty Inc. It breaks it all down.

Re:Why it's impossible to agree on what's allowed on Sunday February 18, 2024 @10:01AM (#39419580)
The implications of this problem are far broader than the article suggests.

Consider this classic essay entitled The Myth of the Rule of Law by Georgetown law professor John Hasnas.

https://www.copblock.org/40719/myth-rule-law-john-hasnas/

It begins with a series of questions about what’s protected under the First Amendment. None seem particularly tricky. The answers all seem fairly clear cut.

Except, you guessed it, they are all controversial. In fact, none of them stand on firm ground at all. The essay brilliantly shows that government is always “rule of men,” and “rule of law” is a mere diversion. This essay will blow your mind.

This is not speculation much less crazy theorizing. Read the Missouri v Biden injunction. It’s crystal clear that FedGov infiltrated and basically zombified social media platforms to perform constitutionally prohibited censorship.
