My wife documented all our adventures for the last decade. Sadly we sold the Airstream last week.

I've created and ran Wandering Labs since 2015, https://wanderinglabs.com

Used to be friends with Nina back in the day and recently sold our full-timing Airstream. https://www.wheelingit.us/2013/04/26/campsite-lottery-red-ro...

Modest. It got a little more sophisticated once we brought code inhouse.

Mildly better is being kind to Reserve California. Florida saw what CA did and decided to follow in their footsteps, and now this new setup is the standard consolidated solution?!?
Re:The scourge of Rec dot gov (2021) on Friday May 13, 2022 @01:55PM (#31370617)
No. Just no.

Public lands and access to public lands can't be a playground for the rich and entitled.

> From a selfish standpoint, this type of system discourages spontaneous trips. When I did my road trip three years ago, I already noticed the trend of mandating an RSVP for any activity. I am not against any RSVPs as I understand the concept of resource protection, but with a greed-based system with profit and not sustainability as its goal, there are fewer incentives to set aside spots for walk-ups.

The increased demand makes `walk-ups` a logistical headache for workers (volunteers) on the ground. If there are X amount of campsites available as first-come-first-served, the campground host then has to spend time turning away people all day when those spots get filled by 9am.

I'm not certain what the solution is for bringing the type of spontaneity back that many people crave, but the reservation system is in place for a reason. Crazy demand for nature.

That said, this seems to be the extent of my marketing desire.

I screen scrape campground registration websites and alert you when someone cancels on a date you want to go camping. Fabulously successful. Now back to my day-job.

https://wanderinglabs.com

Word has gotten around in RV'ing circles that the service is insanely useful. And I'm not much of a marketer.
My side project of screen scraping campground websites and alerting people of availabilities has taken off to the point of making more a month than the day job.

https://wanderinglabs.com/

I've been doing it for years now.

> I'm quite scared of this in America

Don't be. I've done it for 7 years and counting. Have met awesome people and never hassled or bad interactions.

I don't think trashing of beautiful places is any worse now than previous generations.

I've seen tons of old broken glass and aging trash in the desert. A good amount of southern California has been paved over. Most of the northeast US is private land and the spaces in between given over to vehicles.

Yeah this new wave of disrespect isn't great, but it is nothing new and I don't think the focus should be shaming the instagram selfie crowd. General respect and teaching is still the way to go.

I'm a 20 year full stack open source web developer looking for my next challenge. In the past I have created a niche social network for a political action committee, joined a small startup and rewrote their public transit tracking and prediction app, then worked with another startup to help small car dealerships find their web presence and streamline their backend operations.

I am looking for fast paced small companies or startups. Ruby on Rails/Node.js/React. 8 years remote experience.

They have had a huge problem with tractor trailer drivers following their gps through there and getting stuck. There are now 3-4 electronic signs on each side warning truckers.

If you look you can find RV's that are built to last. The vast majority are built as cheaply as possible though.

I've been a nomad in the US for 6+ years. What has kept me on the road has been the friends I've met and community we've created.

My road trip has been going on 2429 days. Couldn't do it in a van, but a 25 foot Airstream is surprisingly comfortable.

They seem to be oddly popular on youtube.

Re:Quitting Instagram on Thursday November 15, 2018 @12:05PM (#18461021)
I don't watch stories. They have some kind of TV? What was wrong with a single photo? Can I get my feed in chrono order please? An ad every 4 posts? How much can I pay you per year to make it stop?

I live an interesting life and it was fun to share and meet others in the same lifestyle niche, but I've just about given up on Instagram. Not worth it.

The Geoff Fox? You came to my house in Durham when I was a kid and interviewed my mom for some moon landing story. I think we saved a seltzer can you drank for a few months.

That is basically how campsites in crowded national parks operate. I'm ok with it.
Re:All U.S. National Parks Are Free to Enter on Sunday on Friday November 09, 2018 @10:00PM (#18419678)
Zion Canyon is already off limits to personal vehicles much of the year. Busses have been running for the last 18 years.

In the peak season there can be a multi hour wait and the nearby town is also constrained by the canyon and there is no more places to put in parking lots.

I don't really think there is an option besides limiting daily visitors.

Re:All U.S. National Parks Are Free to Enter on Sunday on Friday November 09, 2018 @06:56PM (#18419055)
Going for a hike or camping in on land preserved for the people by the people owned by the people should now be an exclusive playground for the rich? No. Just no.
Re:All U.S. National Parks Are Free to Enter on Sunday on Friday November 09, 2018 @05:56PM (#18418727)
> number 1 seems pretty darn appealing

Ouch. The rich have enough playgrounds already.

2. Lottery or capped reservations.

Zion is just nuts at the moment. It's awesome to see everyone out and about enjoying nature but the amount of people are just overwhelming to the senses. (The park itself seems to be holding up fairly well)

5. Carefully exploit the resources for a few more trails and opportunities.

6. Foreign tourists could be charged a greater amount.
