Wow, the Python community sure is impressed with its small dicts. Have they tried pooling?

Or perhaps the brain is less impressive than you think.

Hey HN! I want to hear the arguments as to why this is or isn't a positive development for society. Not whether or not it's the right business decision, or whether or not they should have the right to do it.

Any thoughts?

Re:50 Things I Pretend to Know Now That I Am Nearing 50 on Tuesday November 01, 2016 @08:02PM (#12851253)
Is this parody?

> War is never justified.

> Ability is 99 parts skill, one part talent.

I mean, if it makes you happy, keep telling yourself that.

Yeah, the tribalism isn't really based on party lines so much. Identity politics has gained primary importance, perhaps in part because of social media.

Also, on that note, I thought this was interesting: http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/01/donald-trump-...

Basically, the "Trump tribe" is identified by their embrace of authoritarianism.

Remember, we just elected a black man who was the head of the Harvard Law Review. Whatever you think about him, he did not succeed because of know-nothingism. We have bifurcated in some ways, but there's still a lot to be excited about!

This is so freaking cool! A mini-history told by someone passionate about it.
I used it at work last summer, and it was fine-- did everything you'd expect it to, etc. I found that I missed my Mac for a few reasons, but those seem to be mostly idiosyncratic.
Re:The “432 Hz vs. 440 Hz” conspiracy theory on Tuesday October 25, 2016 @10:44AM (#12788417)
Well... It doesn't. The same ratios exist for A=440:A=440 * 3/2 and A=432:A=432 : 3/2, for example
Re:The “432 Hz vs. 440 Hz” conspiracy theory on Tuesday October 25, 2016 @12:43AM (#12785348)
If I understand correctly, he's guessing that pitch discrimination is finer at lower frequencies, so tuning at 432Hz would allow our ears to be more 'exact'. Of course, this advantage would be negligible, and pitch discrimination decreases past a certain point. The songwriter intended their piece to be heard by human ears at A=440Hz, knowing the various propensities of human hearing at various levels.
Re:The “432 Hz vs. 440 Hz” conspiracy theory on Monday October 24, 2016 @10:50PM (#12784891)
Ok, I see what you mean.

Then most songs would sound 'better' a half-step down, etc.

Re:The “432 Hz vs. 440 Hz” conspiracy theory on Monday October 24, 2016 @07:45PM (#12783929)
What???

Tighter differences between each notes' frequencies??

Please explain this thought.

Re:Peter Thiel, YC, and hard decisions on Monday October 17, 2016 @05:02PM (#12729726)
It's not.
Re:Peter Thiel, YC, and hard decisions on Monday October 17, 2016 @02:09PM (#12727573)
Or it's a stand against a movement which opposes their moral principles. To Pao (and, to the extent that it matters, me), D. Trump's movement is so vile that any prominent supporters of it waive their right to being tolerated. I am sure you'd agree that doing so would be acceptable if Thiel supported Strom Thurmond, Viktor Orban, or Mao Zedong; it's just a matter of how bad D. Trump is.
Re:Peter Thiel to Donate $1.25M in Support of Donald Trump on Sunday October 16, 2016 @05:00PM (#12720917)
Right there with you.

I'd like to know your perspective of the explicit amorality of the SV "quirky-elite", especially the YC-Facebook nexus. To me, Altman, Zuckerberg, and Thiel all very obviously have ulterior scifi motives (live forever, solve the question they think underlies existence, etc) predicated upon a sort of über anthropic principle, i.e., "I'm one in a million so there is a special underlying meaning to my life."

I'm only guessing this from afar. Do you think I'm on base with this, or is their issue just hubris?

I agree, up to the point where we are so certain about a freedom that we decide it is not worth having. Say, the freedom to drive on the wrong side of the freeway.

You make a good point: regulation is a clumsy tool, and I don't think it needs to be applied here. However, I'm disappointed in what seem to be the fundamental motivations of Facebook and its board. I'm not sure that anything could come in the way of Mark Zuckerberg's pursuit of maximizing the world's dependence on his product.

It's large... Perhaps, not as high-quality as some other development communities... But quantity may help over quality.

I have, and it's fine, even on my mbp. Perhaps I'll switch? Margins are low because I don't code all that much.
They don't, but they also don't like going to the gym, waking up early for work, or taking out the trash. I think it'll be interesting to see who do and who don't

Willpower and motivation fascinate me. I've been living with depression for a while, but I've been able to conceptually reorient myself to embrace my circumstances and find willpower to do the 'I don't want to, but I should' things whenever they come around. But just as I don't think everyone is capable of advanced systems programming, for example, I'm not certain that everyone is capable of strong willpower.

Atom (hear me out):

+ runs graphically

+ runs linux, macos, windows (nothing else?)

+ open source

+ ridiculously, easily extensible

+ not riddled with bugs (slowness is not a bug)

+ for small files, comparably quick to Sublime on my machine

+ major dev community; already much better than 6 months ago

- slow in some instances, esp. large files

- doesn't run in terminal

- doesn't run in less-popular OSes

+/- moderate RAM usage, decreasing

Ethically, it's absolutely unconscionable to show people only what they want to see, enabling our worst features to simply fester unchallenged.

From a Machiavellian standpoint (read: Thiel or Zuckerberg), this isn't an intelligent long-term strategy, unless your view of how dumb and malleable people are is such that by playing your cards right, so few people would catch on that it would not hurt the bottom line.

EDIT: could you explain why you want to delete this post?

Re:Barack Obama: America Will Take the Giant Leap to Mars on Tuesday October 11, 2016 @06:52PM (#12689165)
Some good points brought up here-- we need evangelism like this to get enough public support to explore the galaxy.
Re:Barack Obama: America Will Take the Giant Leap to Mars on Tuesday October 11, 2016 @01:40PM (#12686598)
I agree, for the most part.

But can you explain why this is a valid equivalence? On the surface, sure, but exploration-for-it's-own-sake isn't a good enough reason. Also, some would argue that the disadvantages (e.g. disruption of local cultures, ambiguity of meaning in modern life) have outweighed the advantages.

Re:Atom 1.11 on Tuesday October 11, 2016 @01:36PM (#12686560)
Code peek (https://atom.io/packages/code-peek) is pretty good, esp. for a package with very few DL's.
Re:GitHub Audio on Tuesday October 04, 2016 @01:43PM (#12637504)
It's shorthand for "I have a distaste for this thing which I presume to be understood if not necessarily shared." I was wrong about that.

This isn't musical at all! It's some lazy shit a high-schooler with free time and a vague understanding of the Web Audio API could do. Moreover, there's no value in it. The abstract "sonificiation of real data" is such a low bar, there's so much room for creativity, and there are so many brilliant artists who (rightfully) don't want to wade in the depths of the hacky web-tech garbage necessary to make something like this work that it's a wonder anyone gives a fuck about this. To find any value in this, one would have to have tuned out somewhere between having an abstract understanding of the project and actually listening to the darn thing.

Now, do you really want to discuss the merit of the thing, or would you rather Get Offended on the Internet?

Re:GitHub Audio on Tuesday October 04, 2016 @10:47AM (#12635926)
Well, there's a new world's worst thing.
Re:Announcing Rust 1.12 on Friday September 30, 2016 @12:13PM (#12613333)
I mean, yeah, that would be amazing for the ecosystem. Still! I hope some small guy comes and makes something awesome with it, esp. w.r.t AI, which Rust seems sort of perfect for. As much potential as the Amazon-Microsoft-Google-Facebook-Acme Co. collab has, I'm not convinced that they aren't going to use it only to build dull chat bots and give us marginally more relevant ads.
Re:Announcing Rust 1.12 on Thursday September 29, 2016 @09:20PM (#12609992)
The awesome thing about Rust is that the behemoths don't know about it.
