Macos, ios, google docs, and microsoft word will autocorrect two hyphens to an em dash, which is how I normally type it. On a mac you can also type an em dash with option-shift-hyphen.

Really cool! I split my time between cello and software so I'm decently familiar with this line of work. What inspired you to switch careers? I imagine it's not easy to get a foothold as a luthier either. Do you feel like you're taking a big risk?
Re:My Struggle with Doom Scrolling on Thursday January 23, 2025 @11:58AM (#42805679)
The big downside that keeps me from using it is that you need to whitelist the contacts you want to be able to call/text, and can’t add new contacts in assistive access mode. Sad, because it otherwise looks perfect as a distraction minimizer.
Re:Ask HN: Is Docker difficult for non technical people? on Thursday June 20, 2024 @02:37PM (#40741770)
I’m a musician. For the vast majority of colleagues I know (classical), having to use docker will make it a non-starter. But I’m also curious what your app does, if you don’t mind sharing details!
Re:Any programmers here also play instruments? on Thursday June 20, 2024 @11:02AM (#40739522)
Cello! In fact, a few years ago I quit my software job to study cello full time in a masters program.
It’s a good hypothesis. Anecdotally though, I know a bunch of people who have experience playing both, and say that the old instruments can be difficult to play, though sound amazing when played well.

Part of the problem is the potential loss of public value in the form of the undigitized archive, and archive.org provides no solution for that.

Now, is it the responsibility of organization X or person Y to preserve this value? I’m not sure, but that seems to be a separate (albeit also interesting) question.

Hah, I flew planes into ceiling fans too! I also remember scraping my planes against the floor until holes wore into the paper, and seeing how well they could continue flying. There was something really cool about seeing a plane with so much accumulated damage still able to fly.
Is this the type of reasoning that could be used to basic math without errors (without using a dedicated math engine)? I wonder why that type of reasoning seems to struggle.

I think chatgpt is interesting in its ability to highlight the subtle variations in a concept we tend to think of as more of a single attribute (e.g. reasoning) because humans tend to do certain types of reasoning tasks at the same relative proficiency as others. No human can write complex code without being able to add large numbers, so they are often lumped into the same skill category.

How have you found the quality of chatgpt’s recipes?

For guis in general, I like how the actions available to me are much easier to learn, and therefore use. The information conveyed through the layout often provides context for related actions.

In my experience, CLIs are great for efficiency, if I am doing a task so often that it becomes rote behavior and learning the tool is no longer helpful, or if I want to automate it. I find my real world need for either of these to be relatively slim, but I am not surprised that it is common for others.

Re:Teenage Skeuomorphic Desktop Designs on Monday January 30, 2023 @06:55PM (#34588546)
I’ve always wished I could have the desktop behave as a terminal window (un-closable and always ready) rather than a file/folder interface. Does anyone know of a way to achieve this?
Re:Photography for Geeks on Sunday November 27, 2022 @11:23PM (#33769805)
The base stops are ISO 100, 200, 400, etc.

Many cameras let you set the ISO in 1/3 stop increments, but if I recall correctly, many camera manufacturers just keep the sensitivity at the base stops and adjust the brightness via software.

So shooting at ISO 250 really means ISO 200 (underexposing what you requested) but then adding a third stop equivalent of brightening to the digital file. Conversely, using ISO 160 actually means the camera is using ISO 200 (overexposing) and lowering the brightness in software.

What this means, at least 10 years ago when I was more in tune with the photography world, is that people would prefer to shoot at the [base ISO stop - 1/3] levels to because those were the levels with the least noise near that exposure setting. The cost is you risk saturating more pixels in the highlights.

And for the same reasoning, the ISO setting s 1/3 over the base stops were typically avoided as they were noisier, albeit with slightly more dynamic range.

If you take your foot off the gas, acceleration should effectively stop, right? F=ma, so with mass held constant and the only forces being friction, a is actually slightly negative. So max speed happens as soon as you release the gas pedal.

I’m in the process of getting my masters at a conservatory, and you’ve just given me a lightbulb moment in understanding why my playing is sometimes inconsistent (muscle memory) and what is happening when I move beyond that (mindful playing). Very very valuable, thank you for sharing!
I’ve struggled to find a straightforward way to short tether for those who live in the US. Got any pointers?
Re:You will ask many, many questions on Saturday October 01, 2022 @11:24PM (#33052526)
What are some of the successful methods you mentioned in your first point re: different cultural values?
Do recommendation algorithms not take this into account already? Perhaps privacy policies make it harder to automate this effectively.
Margin or options would give you leveraged exposure.
> this is what the powers that be want to happen. they want you to live in a state of panic and fear.

Do you think this is a conscious desire?

Is it something that our leaders developed after attaining power, or is it a preexisting desire that led them to seek power in the first place?

Why do they want people to live in a state of panic and fear?

Re:Ask HN: Tips for more energy during day? on Sunday November 07, 2021 @06:43PM (#29144703)
I’m intrigued by this. Did you have any symptoms that pointed to sleep apnea besides being tired/falling asleep during the day?

I used to fall asleep during class, which led to my (positive) life changing adhd diagnosis. While stimulants have since helped me stay awake, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s still an underlying sleep problem. May mention this next time I see my doc.
