There are a lot of distros out there. That is what makes Linux so great. You can roll your own formula of kernel and userland for YOUR needs[and then share it]. You aren't forced to just take what Microsoft or Apple or XXXX gives you nor do you have to completely write your own from scratch.

Re:Mapping Neighborhood-Level Obesity in the United States on Friday October 09, 2015 @11:41AM (#10360772)
This map follows the income distribution in my area very closely. Neat, but sad.
Re:Amazon QuickSight – Business Intelligence by AWS on Wednesday October 07, 2015 @01:27PM (#10347447)
It is terrific that your end users are willing to spend the time and effort on building their own BI solutions. In my experience, at least with C-levels, that is not the case at all. C-levels also tend to want the most stuff.
Re:Amazon QuickSight – Business Intelligence by AWS on Wednesday October 07, 2015 @12:38PM (#10347037)
A lot of what you are paying for in BI solutions is implementation costs and then to a lesser extent yearly maintenance and support costs. I wonder how they intend to lower implementation costs, since that is kind of lengthy and inherently difficult process.

Every instance of this story omits the 'Windows only' part. It is sort of pertinent.
Hard to resist all that power under foot in Tesla's!
Just stay off the brakes as much as possible. No big secret really.
Re:When Schools Overlook Introverts on Monday September 28, 2015 @01:30PM (#10291690)
We are 12 developers in a room that is half windows opposite an auditorium. We call it the fishbowl. It feels like we are in some sort of science experiment to see how long we can last the indignity.
Re:Why Can't Startups Get US Government Contracts? on Friday September 25, 2015 @10:19AM (#10278282)
Because 20 year olds may not have the extensive government contacts required to land big money contracts.
Re:Launching NginScript on Wednesday September 23, 2015 @03:09PM (#10267352)
Marginal bloat is always rational. Forest for the trees and all that.

The ONLY people who need to know about this is the manufacturer and their regulatory body FDA, etc.

The company can then pull all the inventory that is in and out of the patients and apply fixes or facilitate replacements.

If this could kill people, I'd hope the above ideas would be obvious...but well I know they won't be to everyone.

Re:It's Time to Kill Surface on Thursday May 22, 2014 @02:07PM (#7785255)
The Surface costs more than the average laptop and tablet it is supposed to replace. That is my problem.

And God forbid you want or need processing power or RAM >= 8GB...

ISPs are trying to become Netflix. Google is trying to become an ISP.

Netflix is trying to commoditize bits.

Netflix should try to become an ISP.

Now we know why common carrier will never happen.
Your emotional outburst is not a constructive addition to this discussion.

Despite this tantrum it would seem that more people on HN agree with you than disagree as your comment is still visible. So I am not sure why you are bitching.

Are we better off using decoder rings and snail mail at this point?
Re:LibreSSL: FIPS mode is not coming back on Wednesday April 23, 2014 @01:45PM (#7635590)
So it will be consistent with OpenSSH, also a project of OpenBSD devs.
Re:Introduction to MIPS assembly language (2007) on Saturday April 19, 2014 @03:25PM (#7614414)
MIPS was fun to learn. Its instruction set is not nearly as gnarly as x86 or ARM.
Think of the government as being a member of Hacker News with nearly infinite downvote power. If it doesn't like what you've said it disappears what you've said...often without even so much as an explanation.

You are part of a society in which you have an obligation to protect and preserve the safety of others through reasonable and responsible actions.

I don't think that locking your car while it is parked or not leaving your keys in it while it is unattended is too much to ask.
