Having gone to college and knowing this guy personally from then, you would have a much different opinion... Maybe he has grown up, but back then... yeeesh
Re:U.K. regulators order Meta to sell Giphy on Tuesday November 30, 2021 @08:44AM (#29391973)
Phew, I was wondering when they closed the sale. I swear I would have remembered that
Re:Train Wheels Are Cones on Monday August 30, 2021 @01:43PM (#28358540)
They are also pressure fitted onto the axles. They are not bolted or otherwise fixed. The only thing which keeps them on the train is friction and the rail itself.

I was on a commuter train which derailed because it LOST a wheel. I don't understand why they aren't at least locked in mechanically. That wheel went rolling at 80MPH and blasted straight through trees near the tracks.

Re:Tesla Project Dojo Overview on Monday August 23, 2021 @08:40AM (#28274860)
How ironic... James is VP and DE at AWS...
Re:Fire declared in OVH SBG2 datacentre building on Wednesday March 10, 2021 @09:07AM (#26411336)
The "gas" is more like a fog of capsules. FM-200 is a common one. Basically it has a Fire suppression agent inside crystals which are blasted into the room by compressed air. These crystals melt when they get over a certain temperature and therefore won't kill you; however, breathing that in isn't really pleasant.

Source: I've been in an FM-200 discharge

Re:AWS CloudShell on Tuesday December 15, 2020 @12:51PM (#25432776)
At least with Azure the new Windows Terminal App has Azure Cloud Shell in it. So you can use it like it was just a different session target and less fuss...
Re:Arecibo Observatory Collapsed on Tuesday December 01, 2020 @10:40AM (#25266073)
the NSF confirmed the cables failed sometime over night, this wasn't the planned decommissioning. They noticed with drone flights the cable exteriors which remained on tower 4 were showing pre-failure conditions over the past few days.
Re:Arecibo Observatory Collapsed on Tuesday December 01, 2020 @08:22AM (#25264869)
As sad as this is, I'm glad the NSF didn't try to repair it now. There could have been people on the platform when it gave way.
It caught his nose between one of the ribbons of rail. That caused his car to pierce the barrier instead of having its energy dissipated.

Also there is a theory that the pole holding up the rails didnt shear off at all and thats why the car got snapped in half.

Re:4000° Plasma Lightsaber Build (Retractable Blade) [video] on Tuesday October 13, 2020 @10:29AM (#24765860)
Which in this case is tomorrow. The original video was posted last week
Re:Chef to be acquired by Progress on Tuesday September 08, 2020 @09:06AM (#24407976)
I actually miss using Razor. That was the best Pxeboot based system I have run into
Re:Secret Landscape: America's cold war infrastructure on Tuesday August 11, 2020 @08:51AM (#24119747)
If you liked the stuff here, I would highly encourage you to read this: https://www.amazon.com/Raven-Rock-Governments-Secret-Itself-...

It's very well written and lots of pictures (half the book)

Re:Decision for 2020-21 Academic Year on Monday July 06, 2020 @01:21PM (#23750134)
The average student at Harvard doesn't pay even close to actual tuition, most of the endowment is earmarked for student aid.

If I remember right, something like under 90k earned by the student's family, they pay nothing. I haven't worked there in 2 years, so the math is a bit fuzzy but the concepts are accurate.

Re:AWS Ground Station on Monday March 30, 2020 @08:52AM (#22727613)
That would not be done on Ground Station, at least in standard regions. Once you hit that level, you are into at least the Gov region.

That being said, those agencies already have huge ground stations at their disposal run by NASA and other "groups". They don't need this service, they would ingest them over NIPRNet or SIPRNet directly into AWS Gov or AWS Gov Secret for processing.

Re:How 2 M.T.A. Decisions Pushed the Subway into Crisis on Wednesday May 09, 2018 @04:24PM (#17033688)
Montreal is on tires which gives a predictable stop, it’s not metal on metal which varies based on atmospherics
Re:Ask HN: Weirdest hack that you ever saw in production? on Sunday March 25, 2018 @01:12PM (#16673158)
Similar but inverse to this, I was fixing a critical server and it usually came up in a minute or less. 5 minutes later I get concerned, I walk into the server room and it’s still trying to boot. I scratch my head and see a usb keyboard attached.... with a screwdriver sitting on my space bar.

Yup, I IRQ-DOSS’ed myself.

Re:Fujifilm to take over Xerox in $6.1B Deal on Thursday February 01, 2018 @08:42AM (#16281753)
NZ was the Fuji Xerox partnership. Fuji ran that from all accounts. I worked in the Developing Markets Org at Xerox (proper), Asia Pacific was its own silo and they did their own thing. It’s one of the areas I didn’t work with, others were Western Europe, Russia, and Canada. Pretty much everything else, I knew all the marketing people for the countries.
Re:Fujifilm to take over Xerox in $6.1B Deal on Thursday February 01, 2018 @08:39AM (#16281732)
This is pretty accurate. I mean, I’m sure you remember the xww intranet prefix. Such odd quirks there
Re:Get Rich Quick by Mining Ether with AWS Spot on Tuesday October 03, 2017 @12:38PM (#15393718)

while I want to read this article, that font makes it impossible.
Re:Ask HN: How do news networks get election data? on Wednesday November 09, 2016 @12:41PM (#12912528)
I did this for the AP in high school. They pay you about 40 bucks and two of you go and write it down independently. You than each call the AP and state your numbers and that's it. You show up about 30 minutes before the polls close and you leave about 30 minutes after they end, pretty good pay for an hour (particularly if you are in high school)
Re:Show HN: Gping.io – Like TinyURL for your car on Sunday August 07, 2016 @06:32PM (#12244096)
Something about android and an obd device working together terrifies me. Last thing I want a phone which has exploits galore being able to turn off my engine as I drive.

Frankly any obd device just freaks the crap out of me

Same here, I want to get back to my BK love
I think you guys undersell BAM. That was such a clutch feature where i used BK. It's sad seeing git large file handling just show up, I garuntee it has a long way to go to get parity with BAM.
Re:Amazon S3 Transfer Acceleration on Tuesday April 19, 2016 @06:06PM (#11530870)
We have 20Gbit of Direct Connect with public peering on. This causes upload for us to be 40% slower in primary region and 2-5% slower in the other regions in the US. We only get any benefit going to APAC, granted we aren't your "typical" or "ideal" user for this
Re:AWS S3 Having Problems Again? (Monday 12PM Pacific) on Monday August 10, 2015 @03:55PM (#10036866)
"12:28 PM PDT Between 12:03 PM to 12:19 PM PDT we experienced elevated errors for requests made to Amazon S3 in the US-STANDARD Region. The issue has been resolved and the service is operating normally"

Our AWS TAM called us. I don't think he wanted the nasty call I gave him at 4:30am

Re:Slack was hacked on Friday March 27, 2015 @01:44PM (#9277847)
Wait a second, you got hacked 27 DAYS ago (at least), you know they got data, and you are NOW telling people?

Dong, Dong, Dong, that is the death bell of a startup

This is why i cloud front personal hosts, and fastly work hosts. I never open my server to the worlds with cdn' being so cheap or free now
Re:AWS Frankfurt, Germany Region on Thursday October 23, 2014 @12:09PM (#8498923)
Its an 18.57% premium up over US-EAST-1/US-WEST-2 and a 8.57% premium over EU-WEST-1

In case anyone cares

Re:New AWS Directory Service on Wednesday October 22, 2014 @11:48AM (#8493248)
The question I have is can I use this as a central auth system the other way. AD is expensive as crap, but if this is self-healing and self-backup, then its a good idea for us. Frankly anything is better than Open directory
