Especially those who vaguely miss the spirit of the old internet might (re)discover a lot of it in these often tight knit, yet welcoming, communities.
Tip: Stay away from strongly RP focused communities until you're not preoccupied with just thinking about navigation and the various systems anymore. Although, a lot of what makes MUDs tick should resonate strongly with anyone who wrote a program before, so it shouldn't take long to adapt.
What I'm really saying is, I'm angry about the kind of person who tends to abuse them. Getting angry over little pictographs on the internet is silly after all, right? :-)
These days it's mostly random IoT devices that come with preconfigured ssh service and known passwords.
More interesting might be the fact that there's a strong chance that any successfully hit host is already compromised because you're just one of a myriad people doing this exact thing. In a way it's comparable to overfishing.
edit: If you run a honeypot/net you can watch those scripts poking around to check if a competitor has already left his mark and will then try to remove his access. There's a fast paced arms race going on in that regard.
Bonus points if it's sold as random fantasy language of a strange country and the main cast doesn't understand it either.

Raided the wrong house/neighborhood? I doubt the victim could do anything tangible about it. Even better, this is another tool in the box of vague reasons to search a place that can be just made up.
What about surreal humor? I guess you could say it victimizes the world as we 'know' it?
I drew another consequence and quit the field instead and in turn rescued my passion from fizzling out. And while I'm only passingly interested in what I'm doing now, for me, it was worth taking my hobby back.
It's not an entirely hollow phrase, but something to consider at least and maybe one should ask themselves if they're ready to be passionate about something for 8+ hours a day.
