It sounds like you have been radicalized. Who is this “they” you speak of that is destroying your freedoms? Who is the secret cabal? What is the disconnect between you saying: “this guy probably does deserve to be fired...” along with Callimachi, and thousands of others on a public forums saying the same thing? If you would take a moment to be self reflective, you would be able to see that the “cancel culture” is not a “they”, but it is normal human behavior we all share including yourself.

We do as a collective culture! Bigotry is subjective and changes with time. There is never going to be an ironclad list of protected classes that are going to remain fixed in time. That is because discrimination and what society feels counts as discrimination changes over time.

I get that it would be impossible to solve all forms of discrimination everywhere. I think my fundamental question is can you solve the problem of systemic discrimination, by ignoring it? My problem with the blind audition is you are fixing a local problem and in turn ignoring the global problem.

It seems that corporations and governments are trying to solve the global problem (lack of diversity due to discrimination) which then in turn causes local problems (reverse discrimination).

As with all of these types of posts there are those who complain about how women (or insert any protected class) have unfair advantages. They seem to see the world as a zero sum. If anyone class has an advantage, the other class will be disadvantaged.

The proposed solution is usually to do a blind audition. If you don't know anything about the candidate there is no discrimination. However this seems to have a major flaw. How do you account for all of the disadvantages that occurred before or might occur after the blind audition?

Re:Who Americans spend their time with, by age on Friday December 11, 2020 @10:53AM (#25387079)
Yeah I agree, it is funny hearing younger people claim that all of their friends are their best friends and as they get older their relationships dwindle. I suspect that it is crucial for young people to have more relationships in order to socialize them during early development. Once you hit your 40's having too many relationships becomes a burden.

Yeah but the duopoly is at least committed to opensource for most of its components. I can download opensource drivers for the GPUs (provided by Intel and AMD) and network components (Intel) as well as most-if-not all of the components on my current motherboard.
We often talk about the sanctity of "freedom of speech" for people who say harmful things, but what about the people that are suppressed from participating, because of fear of being brigaded, doxxed, or emotionally harmed. These people are being prevented from "freedom of speech" as well. Usually for reasons of being in an out group. Shouldn't the platform be able to censor those who would limit it's growth?
I think laws should have some flexibility, even frameworks (e.g. US Constitution). The cultural leeway given by freedom of speech is being abused at scale even by foreign entities. We can't just say well because the founding fathers wanted something one way it could never change or adapt to new problems. If you allow no censorship at all the platform becomes a cesspool.
Re:‘Tokenized’: Black Workers’ Struggles at Coinbase on Friday November 27, 2020 @07:08PM (#25233791)
Reading through the comments as black person is depressing.

Many of the comments question whether the accusations are even true or collusive attack because of an unfounded accusation that black people tend to be SJWs (stereotyping). Others blame affirmative-action, bad schools, etc. (classic misdirection). Some even venture into the possibility that a black person complaining about being passed over for promotion might just not be good enough for the job and then just blame discrimination rather than facing the truth (pure gaslighting). Others just go on to attack the New York Times (attacking the messenger). I am waiting for the data science guru to synthesize statistics about how everything is just fine!

I am not going to pretend to be the arbiter of truth here, but can we just take a moment to imagine the possibility that racism (specifically against black Americans) is a problem in America in 2020? Is it such a stretch of the imagination? I mean if we can unquestioningly believe that cryptocurrency is viable currency, we can certainly give the benefit of the doubt to the black workers who have abandoned the company.

Re:When science was the best show in America on Sunday November 22, 2020 @12:44PM (#25179331)
Yes!

The promise of prosperity sounds like a long con these days. Science was the gateway for prosperity and hope and now it seems only to deliver bad news.

Here is what the tech and science crowd is projecting these days:

You are no longer the center of the universe, you are infinitesimal and unimportant.

Everything you do is destroying life in someway.

There is no meaning; everything you believe was wrong and misguided.

The world is capricious and your personal security can change at any moment no matter how hard you work. Adapt or die.

Most of humanity is too dumb to understand how great this is!

Who wants to hear that?

The average Joe has lost all faith, so in order to cope they drop all pretense of rational behavior and go with what feels good at the moment.

Agreed.
I appreciate you for being open, vulnerable and expressing your ideas. However I am black and what you are saying does not sound correct to me. I know a lot of black people (including my family) who listen to Dave Ramsey and watch Fox News. Black people are in general pretty religiously conservative in the US. Personally I used to watch financial TV channels growing up like CNBC and listen to Clark Howard and Susie Orman.

I can see the appeal of a straight talker and pull up by your boot straps personality such as Ramsey. He has helped a lot of people. His style does not work for me personally.

I personally think the financial problems (in general) with black people (aside from racism) in the US stems from two related things: the lack of a coherent family structure and lack of intergenerational wealth transfer. The single-mother family poverty angle is pretty clear: Single mothers have low availability and are poor, and poor people tend to make poor financial decisions due to exploitation and desperation. The intergenerational wealth transfer angle is if you have something of value you are going to transfer to the next generation, you are going to spend time teaching them how to care for it. Think transferring a business, property, and other assets. Legacy is a real important thing for most people. This is something rare for black Americans. Unfortunately in a lot of cases the thing that is transferred between generations are debt obligations.

I am not Indian, but I feel like he is talking to me as well. I spend about 5-6 hours online and I am not accomplishing my goals. I don’t even have goals. Ultimately it is not the fault of the internet companies, the blame lies on me.
