throwmeback

There's something utterly amusing about posting Steve Jobs quotes under M$ critique and vice versa.

losing all nuance by virtue of getting dopamine quicker? count me in!

by community do you mean all the people who make an account just to ask a question on the project's discord, only ever open it to check if someone answered and then never use discord again?

Somehow as I was reading this post, a mugshot of Ted Kaczynski appeared in the background.

Wouldn't be here today without it.

Ehh, time to uninstall. Too bad, it worked great for me.

Whoa there Satan
I'm afraid life (at least mine) is way more complicated than that.

I'm sorry for the quality of this comment, but boo hoo.
Re:The $300B Google-Meta advertising duopoly is under attack on Monday September 19, 2022 @12:41PM (#32900673)
Oh no. Poor Google-Meta advertising duopoly!
I'm honestly baffled someone could be "losing confidence in Amazon" in 2022. Sorry for the expression but like, where the f** have you been? I thought everybody already knows how horrible Amazon is in its absolute, demonic entirety.

This company always felt wrong. Like a shitty bootleg toy shop. Like a shady back-alley dealer. Like a cheap Chinese (sorry, it's a popular pejorative here) scam site. Strewn with knock-offs, bootlegs, mass fake reviews, terrible customer service. Oh and the site always felt really, really off in UI and UX, it's still like that. Later in life I (unfortunately) became more aware of the world around me, became a programmer and so on. But my sentiment starts way earlier than AWS.

Here in Poland (born&living) it's Allegro that was always our Amazon & eBay. Was (and still is) above and beyond the Bezos-ian quality of service. I'm almost sure people still almost never use Amazon here. For the longest time we'd have to use amazon.de for buying stuff if you want it shipped to Poland. I think that's not the case anymore but yeah... uncanny.

BTW I wouldn't be surprised if AWS was the most popular of all services offered by Bezos Co. in Poland.

Re:Reversing hearing loss with regenerative therapy on Wednesday April 20, 2022 @09:48AM (#31096915)
I'm the same. I'm literally cathartic that someone had this same experience. I never, ever heard complete silence - there was always this whirr. I'm a musician so it's easy for everybody to dismiss my problems, but I remember exactly the same things. I always knew if someone turned the TV on. I always heard the TV noise even when it was off. There's also some certain upper-mid frequencies which completely destroy my sanity - bad PA systems and wall reflections are particular banes of my existence.

I've always asked myself - how could I get this if I always had good hearing? Is this even anyone's fault? How could a child have tinnitus when it had no real chance to get it? This entire post+comments has me almost in tears - my tinnitus gets unbearable e.g. when I'm stressed, panicking or overstimulated. It helps to know someone shares my pain, even if this treatment won't become available in my lifetime. I'm used to having stuff playing in the background anyway, it's just the times when I can't drown it out when it's the worst.

PS: BTW, something interesting happened to me recently: I recently visited a retro game museum while on vacation. Being obviously filled with old TVs, the noise was nigh-insufferable for me, but I pushed through because retro games is my thing. We spent ~1hr there and after we left, I felt like my own TV noise was somehow better for the day. Weird.

So many sites have that. I can't really express how frustrating this is - if you don't want me to click anything in your footer, why bother making a footer?

Re:Work Somewhere Dysfunctional on Monday January 17, 2022 @01:02PM (#29969432)
This article kinda feels like an elaborate excuse for not leaving your current employer, partner etc.

I mean seriously - why take shit when there's a 90% chance you're working on another elaborate CMS/CRUD-looking system? There's millions of them out there, you don't need to subject yourself to terrible experiences. Just go someplace else.

Re:Hello Mac OS X Tiger on Monday January 17, 2022 @09:18AM (#29966755)
Same, this feels absolutely dreadful! "Where do I start? Why is there so much stuff screaming at me? What's my first move here? Oh shoot it, I don't want to do this anymore."
Re:Hello Mac OS X Tiger on Monday January 17, 2022 @09:13AM (#29966713)
I... don't get the nostalgia.

Just for context, I'm 26, from a post-commie country, have been around computers since birth thanks to my dad. He wasn't technical, he just liked the new tech.

What stinks to me: - I very much prefer 16:9/16:10 ratios (4:3 begone)

- Skeuomorphism was always very "uncanny valley" for me; I much prefer the Win95/OS 7/etc. designs than skeuomorphic ones, the current flat designs are better but way too saturated and I tend to lose my focus quickly

- I vividly remember how lost and frustrated I was when those old IDEs would launch with multitudes of windows by default - most of them were never used by anyone and everyone would just click through to the main window; being a small child I didn't know what to do or where to start and nobody around me could help - this memory kept me disinterested with programming until I literally went to a programming bootcamp after my finals.

- I really mean it! IMHO user friendliness is over the roof compared to those supposedly golden times.

Re:My career of treating patients has ended on Tuesday December 21, 2021 @07:29AM (#29636735)
Not getting into the food/politics part, but about heart surgeries - you're so wrong you made me comment. Bravo.
I had an opposite experience with Xamarin.Forms - I loved my time with it. A deployed commercial app I made is in the stores for a year now.

No idea about Flutter though.

Re:Santa hat removed from VS Code after complaint on Thursday December 19, 2019 @06:47AM (#21834041)
I had the biggest hate-laugh of the year when I noticed this trying to determine if this guy is a troll or not.
Re:Ask HN: Best Noise Canceling Headphones on Monday November 18, 2019 @01:35PM (#21566838)
Edifier W860NB. I never wore anything more comfortable on my head. It's half as cheap as the popular mentions here (bose and sony), but the sound quality is miles better.
Re:Ask HN: Do you have experience with school bullying? on Tuesday November 05, 2019 @05:07PM (#21457274)
So you never ever witnessed bullying while growing up? I doubt it. I also grew up in a post-Iron Curtain country and have a vastly different experience than yours. I was bullied since kindergarten right to the end of my education. I've seen people bullied both in a small city and a bigger one. Both verbally and physically. Most times it were the poorer kids who did it.
Re:Ask HN: Do you have experience with school bullying? on Tuesday November 05, 2019 @04:59PM (#21457190)
I have seen and experienced bullying in both small and large cities in Poland. It gets worse every year, especially nowadays with social media.
Do watch The Expanse though. The show is amazing, and I hope the books are even better.
Re:Stop Using Internet Explorer on Wednesday September 25, 2019 @07:10AM (#21069561)
I recently worked on a project with a big finance/insurance company. Their IT still uses W7 and IE. "Well it just works for us"

Let's just say I was baffled - I really thought it's all a meme until I saw it with my own eyes.

Re:An Exercise Program for the Fat Web on Thursday May 30, 2019 @09:33AM (#20050929)
I did for some months, but the synchronisation isn't working yet for iOS. I'll gladly switch to it once they have it working.
Re:An Exercise Program for the Fat Web on Thursday May 30, 2019 @09:31AM (#20050914)
Add-on context menus display only when launching them through overflow menu, it doesn't work when I put the icon next to the navbar.

I have a smaller DPI non-retina MBP2012 and I always set the default page size to 80% in Chrome. I used two extensions for the same functionality in Firefox (Fixed Zoom and a second one that worked a bit better) but I always had issues with the sites being bigger than the viewport and having to scroll around them to see the content. Images were the biggest victim to this behaviour.

You are right - there are issues in Chrome, but I don't feel them as much in my day to day life and it counts for me.
