Re:Show HN: I built a memory-safe web server in Rust on Sunday March 02, 2025 @03:04AM (#43228389)
It sounds like this is a general purpose web server rather than a web framework like axum and actix-web. It's in the category of nginx, apache or caddy.
Re:LA wildfires force thousands to evacuate, NASA JPL closed on Thursday January 09, 2025 @01:54AM (#42642351)
Ok, I understand some of the criticism now. 1.) She cut funding to the fire department budget by millions of dollars. 2.) There is a video floating around where she is totally unresponsive to questions.
Re:LA wildfires force thousands to evacuate, NASA JPL closed on Thursday January 09, 2025 @01:45AM (#42642296)
I keep seeing questions about the location of Karen Bass and I don't understand the outrage. Did she fly to Ghana when the fires erupted? Is she not allowed to take vacations? Was she expected to magically reappear in California when things got out of hand? Has her responsiveness been extremely latent.
Re:NCSI Probing Needs to Die on Tuesday December 03, 2024 @06:31AM (#42305068)
The repo contains a script that fingerprints a browser and sends the results to a server. What does that have to do with the death of NCSI?
I suspect that the remote driver will not have unilateral control of the car. It'll probably be something along the line of giving hints when the car asks for them.
Re:Show HN: Free-friendly serverless support for AWS and GCP on Wednesday August 14, 2024 @12:25AM (#41242535)
Who is the target audience for this? Terraform can deploy serverless apps to AWS Lambda and GCP Cloud run too. Why would I use this instead?
I'm genuinely missing your point. It sou d like you're insinuating that the lack of a "normal" name is a good reason to disqualify someone from a job opportunity. That possibly implies that the resume screen uses someone's name as a discriminating factor and I don't think that it should be.
Re:Twilio CEO announces 11% of employees will be laid off on Monday September 19, 2022 @12:14AM (#32894213)
Hate that people or losing their jobs. However, the frankness of this message was refreshing. Hopefully everyone lands in equal or better situation.

I was spared in the last recession/downturn and all I can do is hope for the same and keep myself prepared in the event that I need to look for something new.

Not that fast food is a hallmark of quality but I've also noticed that fast food quality has gotten worse. I may have you matured away from the flavor but I used to enjoy a good Carl Jr/Hardy's burger, a Chipotle burrito and some Mc Donald's menu item. Now it taste like the oils is never cleaned or cleaned with some chemical that leaves an after taste.

This is a good thing because now I gotten pretty good at cooking some of the dishes at home.

Totally. If that became a revenue driver for Google I could see their Algorithm optimizing for the case in some contrived form :).
Re:I'm a security engineer and I still almost got scammed on Friday April 22, 2022 @02:08AM (#31118729)
Unfortunately the bar for what's considered a Security Engineer isn't as high as it used to be.
Re:I Lost $150K in a Day on Sunday April 03, 2022 @04:19AM (#30895357)
Don't realized gains followed by realized losses within the same tax period offset each other?
Re:YouTube cancelled my Nextcloud installation how-to on Saturday April 02, 2022 @07:15AM (#30887329)
Just an idea that pop into my head. With the scale that Google has a manual review process wouldn't scale well. I think that they could offload the evaluation to a jury of randomly selected, opt-ed in users. Where a quorum or super majority gets content unblocked.
Re:It takes $420k per year to run Lichess on Sunday January 16, 2022 @09:50AM (#29956394)
I don't know how much time he dedicates to running the service at this point but the salary seems light if it's full time work.
How is this legal? Do Pluto and Tubitv have some contract with providers that allows this?

I remember a company named Aereo being sued out of existence because they were offering OTA TV to their subscribers by allocating an micro antenna to each user. The excuse did fly in court.

BTW, thanks for sharing!

My first thought is that the reason is to take the incentive away from "dislike" trolls. I reasoned that trolls got some pleasure out of seeing that ratio being skewed and it would encourage them to continue disliking videos.
Re:Thank you, GitHub on Thursday November 04, 2021 @04:02AM (#29104503)
In the grand scheme of things it does make sense to focus on one or the other. However, they better execute this with precision because they risk interrupting big business in both products
Re:Twitter previews Ticketed Spaces on Saturday May 22, 2021 @11:42AM (#27247572)
Whether developers acknowledge or not, when they build their apps for the App Store they're forfeiting 30% off their revenues.

Of course they can build PWA's to try to keep more of the money but Apple will eventually find a way to capture that money. Apple controls the only browser engine on IOS and I don't expect them to investing in features that threaten the Apple tax.

If PWAs become popular enough then Apple will add a browser feature redirects/proxies payments through Apple and they'll take their 30% cut.

Re:Twitter previews Ticketed Spaces on Saturday May 22, 2021 @12:25AM (#27243449)
I assure you that Apple has no incentive to keep Safari up to date with the latest webspecs that enable solid PWA. Further, If developers started leveraging PWA enough that it made a dent in revenues Apple would find a way to discourage PWAs. Tax avoidance is illegal in the Apple ecosystem.
absolutely this, asdf saw the true problem with version management and provided an elegant solution.
Re:Apple Is Holding Back the Creator Economy on Saturday May 15, 2021 @06:46PM (#27169671)
For example, ACME Developer could post ads that lead to a web-based signup flow (optionally collect payment info), then provide an App store link.

Until the user provides payment info (via in App or payment site), use an semi-aggressive email drip campaign to steer users to the payment website.

Some percentage of user will find (and use) the App Stores payment process. The hope is that those that due use the website make the campaign payoff in the long term.

Re:Apple Is Holding Back the Creator Economy on Saturday May 15, 2021 @03:05AM (#27163088)
I don't develop apps for the App Store so I don't know what it's like to go up against the beast. But Apples logic makes sense to me. If developers want their 30% back then they should develop a marketing pipeline that funnel users to their preferred payment method. If the 30% is at all worth it then it make sense to devise a way to capture as much of it as possible.

On the flip side, it's not a free lunch. Developers will have to spend money to get users on boarded outside of the App store.

With that said, I agree that 30% is too much and makes Apple look greedy.

Re:Bitcoin plunges to $52,000 in one hour on Sunday April 18, 2021 @01:39AM (#26850069)
From 58000 to 55000 seems typical of bitcoin, no?
Re:Codecov Bash Uploader compromised on Thursday April 15, 2021 @03:18PM (#26824961)
Looks like a PR [1] was started 4 hours ago but for such a simple task not much progress has been made.

Security breaches happen. If it hasn't happened yet consider it luck. I'm disappointed by the lack of urgency in the response and failure to take nominal steps in improving their posture.

I hope this is a wake up call for them and other Saas companies.

Considering the data at risk, the delay in notifying users was too long. That's 15 days in which the hacker was made aware to hastily make use of their stolen data.
How does this work? Do all of the pre-SPAC shareholders agree to sell their shares to the SPAC? Or do they swap shares and become a part of the SPAC?
I have uBlock disable all javascript and make permanent and temporary exceptions when I need to. It's really made browsing the web cumbersome. The more I'm aware of new 0-days the more I appreciate the tar I've laid before myself.

Thanks for the info about 'delete WebAssembly'

Re:LG is getting out of the mobile phone business on Monday April 05, 2021 @12:24AM (#26695340)
Why are google brands[0] featured so prominently on Microsoft's phone. Is it a requirement for phone Android phone vendors to keep google on the homescreen?

I believe Hauwei is being forced to develop their own OS due to the threat of US sanctions. However, I think it'd be a losing battle to try to steal enough market share of IOS/Android. They'd simply copy (or one up) your competitive advantage leaving you little room to compete.
