Contrarily I wish people used 'Nx times' more often, especially for 10x in place of 'an order of magnitude'. It's more welcoming and less pretentious.
Re:Twilio incident: What Signal users need to know on Monday August 15, 2022 @04:39PM (#32475063)
Unrelated to this current focus on the weakness of using a phone number as a contact reference, I have experienced a different problem. If a user has ever used Signal previously and for whatever reason revert back to SMS, if another user sends them a message via Signal it is lost with no indication. This is a growing problem as people try out Signal and when they get a new phone just forget or don't care to install it again.
Re:Ask HN: Have You Left Kubernetes? on Monday August 01, 2022 @11:13AM (#32307148)
it really comes down to what you're building. many web app startups would be better served paying for PaaS that manage this for them. as an example: Netlify/Vercel. if you need a database add FaunaDB to that. if that sounds risky or expensive, consider the cost of building a DevOps team.

Texan politicians didn't miss a chance to blame wind power for the outages. Unfortunately, those initial lies are still circulating. The primary cause was that the pipes supplying natural gas froze. https://www.texastribune.org/2021/02/16/texas-wind-turbines-...

Anything we can read or watch on the transformation Amsterdam made?
Oliver's most recent ditty did roast Biden remarking 'I can taste it. I think he could've done more to roast previous administration policies.

Wild. The technicality of earning a doctorate to be called a doctor is no more.

Along the same lines of utterly dominant and lesser known, Jahangir Khan in the sport of squash. Most famously for 555 consecutive victories.
Re:Sitting and standing at work (2015) on Monday July 18, 2022 @06:02AM (#32136418)
The greater issue for this use case is latency. Bluetooth + cellular delay is not a kind thing to impose on your teammates.
Re:Sitting and standing at work (2015) on Monday July 18, 2022 @06:00AM (#32136413)
If you do this, please use a cabled headset. Bluetooth headsets inevitably add latency, particularly off WiFi. Latency makes meetings more fatiguing.
Happened to me too starting a few weeks ago. What solved it was to turn off Bluetooth, and prevent from activating on start.
This begs a question: what technologies are inhibited by a looser definition of slavery? What inventions would arise if a global minimum wage was enforced?
It's fair to compare what competitors baseline is here, at the risk of whataboutism. I find it surprising not a peep about the culpability Windows has in the equation.
A merger can eat that soul in the same fashion. Such as Boeing effectively becoming McDonnell Douglas.
Re:It’s time to make that indie C# game in Godot on Thursday July 14, 2022 @03:45PM (#32100653)
Would be popcorn to see Epic make a saucy donation to the Godot project at this time.
Re:Unity merges with IronSource on Wednesday July 13, 2022 @07:43AM (#32081335)
I don't recognize this company anymore. What a gibberish announcement. Their game engine is hardly discussed. Apparently the future is ads on mobile apps.
I really enjoyed this book which covers the subject deeply https://www.amazon.com/Repeat-How-Music-Plays-Mind/dp/019999...

Re:Skyrim together: mod to play online on Sunday July 10, 2022 @04:57AM (#32042954)
While the modding restrictions are bemusing to me as well coming from open source software, the introduction of Wabbajack a couple years ago greatly streamlined things so that you had one curated install that could encompass hundreds of mods. Collections as I understand is Nexus' take on the same idea.

while Mozilla has dropped official support I've had no issues using FirefoxPWA addon for similar functionality
has there been any attempt to pursue this legally?
do you have any sourced examples for this collusion?

Re:LMN 3, an open source DAW in a box [video] on Friday June 24, 2022 @01:19PM (#31866014)
As a hobbyist musician I'm bemused by the stickiness of the concept of a DAW. There are so many all-in-one devices that meet the definition of each letter in the acronym. But DAW is a proxy for something else, vaguely more professional or expensive.

Then you have the idea of DAWless. Oh well, every field has its vestigial jargon.

Re:50th Anniversary of the Mother of All Demos (2018) on Wednesday June 08, 2022 @10:27PM (#31676977)
when did 'demo' begin use as a shorthand for demonstration?
that TFA recommends Zoom above all other options is strange. it has very poor design decisions in my experience and no longer works reliably without being installed.

also as debate from an HN post from a couple days ago covered well, using an external camera instead of webcam is a fool's errand. my how I've tried.

the most important change for reducing fatigue in my experience: turn video off. audio only.

While feelings may be involuntary, this does not mean we are beholden to them. Maybe envy is what happens when a consciousness is discontent and allows these feelings to overpower.
