The price of borrowing has never been lower. Stable governments can borrow at negative real rates. When prices drop it means there is more supply than demand.

Long term too. The bottom 50% of Americans lost all their wealth and went into debt to live since then.
I had a great-grandmother from rural Moldova. She spoke Vlach, Bulgarian and Russian.

Speaking three languages is not a big deal when you live in a village where everyone else speaks them.

Re:“We already store data. In a database. It works well” on Tuesday February 11, 2020 @08:28AM (#22298264)
A lot of places can't do more than 10k a day. So you either try and sell at the peak and eat the risk of them going under, or you sell continuously and leave a lot of money on the table because price fluctuates week to week.

These people are too poor to be a viable market. There is a lot more money in getting more of them in prison than getting them out.
The same people who benefit from encryption if govts are to be believed. If cash keeps being as unwieldy as it has become, a $100 note today is worth about what a $10 note was worth in 1920, people will just stop using govt back cash and use gold or art instead. Monero looks like it's the first large scale crypto to get inflation and anonymity at least partly right.
The bottom 50% of US citizens have -0.2 trillion in wealth. That's right, they are in debt.

Never in the history of the world have the poor had less than nothing.

The bottom 50% of the US are poorer than they were in 1968 in both real and absolute terms.

To quote Feynman: explaining how something happens makes the why irrelevant.
Stop the always on web. There is no reason why latency for Twitter or facebook should be any faster than 1h.
You can easily run a workload with 20tb/day on a single thread ripper.

My last contract we wrote a c tool that did dsp on 10tb/day data with a latency of 50 microseconds. We are using less than 10% of the CPU on that.

Imagine if 70% of roads were privately owned by one company. That company, call it roadle, opened a restaurant chain. There is free parking in front of all roadle restaurants. There are always roadworks around all non roadle restaurants.

This is what search is like today.

Re:Miscarriage can lead to 'long-term post-traumatic stress' on Tuesday January 21, 2020 @12:07AM (#22104440)
And no one will stop her. Just how today some women elect to give birth without anesthetics. And others do it at home.
Re:The Internet of Beefs on Monday January 20, 2020 @11:11PM (#22104251)
It's an odd world where 4chan back in its worst days had a better community than fb, Twitter or reddit do today. And that's with the gore and other unmentionables.

Working on an artificial womb because my wife went through the same. Pregnancy is barbaric the sooner we stop forcing half the world to do it the better for everyone.
Earth shine is a thing.
Re:Tradition Is Smarter (2018) on Tuesday January 14, 2020 @12:04AM (#22042007)
As it should be. Doing things as have they always been done means we haven't killed everyone yet. That is quite an achievement when you consider just how hostile to life nature is.
Re:Working for a startup makes less sense on Wednesday December 25, 2019 @03:24AM (#21877574)
Were talking about $5k of hardware to meet your needs 20 times over with the new threadrippers.

Is your aws bill really under $500 a month?

Re:Working for a startup makes less sense on Tuesday December 24, 2019 @03:30AM (#21870724)
That's 10tb = 10000gb = 10000/24/60/60 = .11gb/s. My 2015 desktop could handle that.

Where do you work? I'd like to pitch my radical idea of edge consolidated cloud computing.

Here's one in the US: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Company

The 90% death rate in the first two years is really impressive.

Ok give me your address. I'll call a developer and well start a 120 story highrise where you live. You'll end up living in a much worse place when it's all said and done but anything else would be immoral.
I've been called a tech bro, late 20 something 1m in net assets. Me and my group of friends are absolutely the geeks of yore. Ffs my last pitch had a wh40k reference in it and the guy financing it spend more time talking about warhammer lore than about the actual startup.

Ironic that all journalists got the Iraq war wrong without the need for fake news.

We don't need real journalists, we need a way to pay for news that makes accurate reporting profitable.

Partisanship is a hell of a drug.
I have written interpreters in python and god help me lex and yacc. The point is that writing one in scheme is so easy you almost think that the language was designed with that in mind, it was in case the sarcasm doesn't get through the text.
Yes. That's the point, you will write the dsl to do that in scheme. Then use that to solve the original problem. Abstractions on top of abstractions.
The cpp 2020 is 2000 pages. There comes a point when a language is a valid target of complaints.
Simple question: do you know enough lisp to write a self hosting interpreter in it?

People talk up their language until they learn lisp then this happens: https://www.draketo.de/proj/py2guile/

I hope you enjoy being uninsurable for Parkinson's in the future.
