Re:Ask HN: Starting over after business failure on Monday March 16, 2020 @03:56PM (#22596889)
What worked for me was through word of mouth/utilizing the relationships I'd built up while trying to build a business.

This was me a few years ago. My end goal was to build up savings in the 3-5 year time frame.

My off-ramp was to:

1) Take on consulting clients

This allowed for a shift in day to day/finding an alternate source of income asap. Depending on opportunities available, you might want to skip this step.

2) Identify interesting startups in the area + get a software dev job.

This allowed me to hone up my rustier coding skills and make good money without needing to worry about clients/big picture deliverables.

3) After 1 year, move to FANG.

I needed a year to get back into the IC mindset and skillset at a level where I could be hired as a senior/principle level at FANG.

Re:Why every cyclist needs a pool noodle on Friday May 17, 2019 @10:38PM (#19945256)
Side note: I commute to work on a bike occasionally. My commute isn't long (~3miles) and I try to be considerate and move to the side when possible, stop at stop signs, not run lights, not sneak up while waiting at stop lights, and stay off the sidewalk. You know: behave like a considerate driver sharing the road.

The reason I do this is because all the bikes I see when I drive are flagrantly disregarding traffic laws and acting like they own the road. These pool noodlers seem like they are doing more of the same.

I wish they got pulled over by cops more often because all they are doing is endangering everyone else who is actually sharing the road.

Cyclists are why I have a dashcam.

I hate to crush this romanticism in the crib, but this comment is overemphasizing the impact a lone engineer working on a government project will have, which will just disillusion and frustrate applicants once they start the job.

The parent's concerns about quality of life with pay topping out at 160k is real and shouldn't be waved away with "it's worth it". Doubly so if you have kids. Take a look at this recent living wage page: http://livingwage.mit.edu/. Can you make it work? Sure. But going into this with eyes wide open is better than looking at this with rose-tinted glasses.

Re:Meet Q, a Genderless Voice on Wednesday March 27, 2019 @10:15PM (#19508537)
The key word there is defined. Defined by gender means boxed in by the expectations that being a male or female thrusts on us.

Ergo, that sentence sounds like someone is asking not to be boxed in by their gender.

Why is that not something you can support?

Just because there are kids starving in Africa doesn't make me any less hungrier.

Just as a counter-point: I took off 3 years to stay home with kids.

I recently started a new position after very little time looking with a >80k raise.

I've felt the same pressure to stay current. But, turns out it's all about how you can frame what you bring to the table vs what you can't.

Can amazon reconsider the Crystal City site too?
