Re:More German than many Germans on Monday August 03, 2026 @08:48AM (#49155070)
There’s something I find very distasteful about the idea of abandoning a country that provided you opportunity exclusively in the name of your own happiness. I think it’s the kind of attitude from immigrants that is greatly increasing anti immigrant sentiment. Become part of an old world people takes generations. Even in America, the branches of my family came here four generations ago and I view myself as American and would be accepted as such, but I still hold a high amount of gratitude for the original founders of the country.

https://docs.docker.com/ai/sandboxes/ Any idea on how that compares to this docker feature in development?
I work in the research space so it's mostly prototype code. I have unlimited access to codex 5.x-xhigh. I rarely directly alter the code codex generates at this point. My productivity has significantly increased.
Why? When I think of boulder I do not think of “people that resonate with the American public”
Re:The bachelor tax – what it costs in taxes to be single on Tuesday January 27, 2026 @03:43PM (#46786321)
What's going to get worse? Currently parents get absolutely shafted by the tax system as the tax credits are next to nothing relative to the amount of time, effort, and capital it takes to raise a child.

Currently the cost of raising children is privatized while the benefits are socialized.

I perform software engineering at a research oriented institution and there are some projects I can now prototype without writing a line of code. The productivity benefits are massive

> I'm here to pay taxes and get the bare minimum back

I find this point of view to be profoundly sad and I hope it’s not shared by the majority of immigrants to germany

It's a shame that there's not the option of providing parents with the choice of free child care or some kind of cash subsidy.

A bit tangential, but the overall problem is that cost of having children is privatized while the benefit is socialized. I'd love to see age and number of children progressively factored into the income tax bracket people pay. Something like a 60-80% tax rate for all income >150k for those >40 without children so those that benefit the most from future generations being born are helping to shoulder the cost

Re:Has the Decline of Knowledge Work Begun? on Thursday March 27, 2025 @04:26AM (#43491431)
As a first step I'd prefer to see both of them dramatically more means tested. There's no reason that someone with millions of dollars of assets should be receiving thousands of dollars a month from the state. I think this position is politically tenable with the looming cuts that will happen automatically over the next decade
Re:Has the Decline of Knowledge Work Begun? on Wednesday March 26, 2025 @08:37PM (#43489176)
The result of boomer cultural and capital domination. Millenials need to grow up and yank power from them, first starting with massive government handouts given to olds

Our daughter is the same. Pizza girls and tickle crab are two of her favorite

love to hear it! In that case, branching out to other peoples' children can bring great satisfaction. For example, volunteering to teach a class at a local high school

Do you have children? If not, it's a great use of time, especially without financial pressure
Re:Should More of Us Be Moving to Live Near Friends? on Saturday December 28, 2024 @12:41PM (#42532733)
likewise. We have a signal group chat that we've slowly been adding new friends to. It's a fantastic way to stay in touch
Re:Should More of Us Be Moving to Live Near Friends? on Saturday December 28, 2024 @12:39PM (#42532714)
>Another thing that’s really weird and related is another recurring theme in the American ethos: the cultural shame that comes with living “at home” or staying in the same small town for your whole life. Somehow they made it so living close to your family and friends for your 20s-30s and maybe forever means you’re a “loser”.

The older I get, the more I regret moving away from my family and friends in New Jersey. I'm only 3 hours away so still see them about once a month, but I'm very envious of my friends that stayed in our home town and get to see each other every weekend and their children get to spend daily time with their grandparents.

Whenever we consider moving back though, housing prices are always one of the biggest deterrents.

Congratulations and thank you for breaking the cycle.
to those unaware: 11 is the laughing taunt in aoe2 and is used in the community like lol. the poster above was describing how you hunt a boar in aoe2 which is a vital source of food in early game. it is risky to use your towncenter to weaken a boar because if you kill it with the towncenter you can not harvest the food
I made the transition a few years ago by going back to school for my MS. This allowed me to re-enter the internship pipeline
for a few reasons:children allow you to fulfill a whole new role in life, its a duty to pass on the gift of life, and family is important. people have lived through much worse

yes. passing on the gift of life is one of the fundamental duties of society. luckily this is a self correcting problem
Re:The Great American Rail-Trail on Thursday April 04, 2024 @06:39PM (#39936677)
ive done the gap ride 4 times now and its always been a blast. we go from pittsburgh to cumberland so the last day is always such a blast with the big tunnel and 20+ miles downhill
the dramatic difference compared to what?
Ukraine's troops are uniformed and fighting along a front, not trying to blend in with civilians in an urban area
> but the problem is that the value proposition for having kids is not terribly high. They're expensive, and time consuming

Yes but you get to pass the gift of life off to another person which I think is the greatest thing one person can do for another. It's a sacrifice so someone else will get to experience their first spring, their first love, the great works of art of humans past, etc.

>I don't think I'd be a terribly good parent, and I would prefer to avoid screwing up another human.

You sound like you'd be a great father. From a stranger who had their first 2 years ago with a second on the way, please reconsider your vasectomy. I can't stress the absolute joy and love it has brought my wife and I.

We just had our first child at 33 and I wish we had done it at 24 or 25, although it's hard to predict if we'd be as happy as we spent those years changing jobs, going back to graduate school, and traveling
