I can't even watch anything anymore. It tells me to sign in, but I don't want to sign in. The great YouTube uubiquitous video host of the web appears to be dying.

For Javascript, is that resources or sane dependencies? Can one have two?
It can teach your child but can't tell the time. AI, the ultimate grifter.
I can touch type. But I don't get why it's a skill in itself. I get the physio part, but not te typing 8n itself.

Could you explain beyond using A for B would allow people to use A for B.

Re:Ask HN: Will We Rethink Calendars? on Friday May 16, 2025 @11:51AM (#44006887)
'Day' as a subscription service.

If you don't pay, you will not get the new day.

It'll be crept in through a Total Recall style augmented sleep where a week long holiday seems teally only takes a night's sleep.

When normalised, leisure time will becme a subscription service.

Why is typing educational?

How to sit, adjust a desk and chair for keyboard, touchscreen, stretching and mobility exercises, yes. But why typing?

Victim to Google indeed if I email someone at GMail.

I do not use Apple devices, and I do not use Google services. While certainly not the majority, I don't this is that an unusual position on HN.

> This is like the early days when people didn’t trust buying things over the internet

If you like bad analogies, why not do car analogies? For example, at least this one's accurate:

I wouldn't trust Sam Altman any more than a used car salesman. The only difference is, Sam Altman's persuaded me to pay him to sell me as a the product.

Re:The Internet 1997 – 2021 on Wednesday May 14, 2025 @09:11AM (#43984123)
You weren't available all the time then. It was perfectly natural to assume someone wasn't at their computer and that was perfectly ok. It wasn't necessary to give status updates that you would in fact be on time to meet like you said you'd be, things were a little more planned, and you'd call or SMS if really needed but mainly don't want to intrude.
Re:Dotless Domains on Tuesday May 13, 2025 @10:12AM (#43973201)
10 million requests per month for $5 is about 4 requests per second, correct? Which is about 3 orders of magnitude less than nginx serving static html.

As a comparison, that's akin to a person walking 4 km/day vs. flying 4,000 km/day,

It's still not a great comparison as the $5 VPS is already paid for. But to take it as you suggest, I agree it's up to the website owner whether they prefer to have 4km/day workers who can sometimes clone themselves in different parts of the world but only for a limited time until they costmore, or a 4000/day flying suit.

Still a bit apples to oranges.

Management is more technical fallacied than it's ever been: HR believe they are fine tunng for good.
Re:Dotless Domains on Sunday May 11, 2025 @01:01AM (#43951546)
Wasn't Cloudflare supposed to prevent DDOSing?

It seems only a privacy leak tool now.

1000 requests / min @ 10ms limit / request. That's 16 requests per second. Any reasonable CMS, wiki or blogging tool should be able to do one request in 62.5ms. Add on cacheing for non logged in users and nginx serving anything static, that's less than the power a $5 VPS provides.

At these rates, the case for Cloudflare is a lot less than it was.

Teams.

Chat is not chat. Office Communicator and Skype for Business were chat apps. Teams is not. Not on desktop and doubly not on mobile.

Collaborative sites. SharePoint was a collaborative workspace. Teams' schizophrenic frankenstein of uninteroperable 'apps' from 'Lists' unaware of members of a Team to 3rd party *ware that has regressed in function, collaboration and interoperability from SharePoint so much a two decade old install of Joomla does a better job, is not.

> if you’re involved in something that has poor consequences

Designer of the iPhone admits iPhone use, and presumably smartphone use (?) has negative consequences?

And he's teaming up with Sam Altman to fix it?

Apple's App Store is anticompetitive.

It's bolted on 'security' 'reasons' are all but that. When looking inside Apple's App Store you find fraudulent app after fraudulent app. And I don't think they're incompetent enough to otherwise make an insecure OS.

Yet there's no other way to provide my users with an app for their device should they choose to use Apple. They have the difficult choice to leave behind an ecosystem that's entrapped them.

I have no choice, given I want to provide them a service they expect, from paying Apple's uncompetitive Monopoly Charge.

No one but Apple wins. It hurts consumers. It hurts small businesses. It hurts the American and World economies by stifling innovation and growth. Overall we all lose from the deadweight loss the monopoly charge, essentially a tax, imposes.

Re:VS Code forks are facing a grim future on Friday May 09, 2025 @06:35AM (#43935328)
This time it's different, that phrase uttered by so many every time it is not different.
You could just not used a locked down platform.

Or not use the app and use the website * .

Or protest why you're happyto pay an Apple Tax for your use of your own device.

Or not use Reddit given their hostility to users.

* Unless notifications are that important, and if that's the case I hope you're paid to use Reddit.

There are plenty of solutions. Being a Reddit 'user' and an Apple 'user' seem to have a big overlap. And sadly that seems to be 'users' as people willing to be abused by the companies they entrust with their time and data.

How many Bitcoin can it mine while running my AI startup?

And does it run Linux?

One day, I'm going to credit my entire department, deli and everyone in the park at 2pm as contributors too.
Re:Minimum Viable Blog on Saturday May 03, 2025 @11:02AM (#43879509)
For a similar reason, blog posts should have no words as these can become SOE and the purpose of blogging become intrinsic SEO.

Personally, I blog in my head but am concerned still it could lead to bias in my other activities which are mainly related to sitting under a tree by a lake in the middle of nowhere.

I find your ideas intriguing and would like to subscribe to your newsletter. Do you publish in RSS?
Re:Mark Zuckerberg says ads will soon be handled by AI on Friday May 02, 2025 @04:00AM (#43867282)
That's a relief. While it seems a great waste of resources to have to have AI watch adverts for me, it's worth it the way online has become.
Re:Xiaomi MiMo Reasoning Model on Wednesday April 30, 2025 @10:40AM (#43845936)
The pendulum already turned back. The current generation under 20 grew up with touchscreens. That obseletes input with pinyin; many don't care if the device has no keyboard.
I found Twilio's interpretations of US SMS regulations hostile to startups.

I even had to send a 'business plan' to be 'approved'.

As their perception of the glow of the sun shining out of their behind was clearly different from mine, I gave up and went with Amazon.

Reading less is faster.

A popular protestantism is not a bandwagon the current political circus troupe will fit on.
Does it put the order of others off,i.e. a net loss?
