Are we still doing this thing where we attribute success in one area to completely different fields? You may as well elect Opus 5.5, seen as it is already superhuman at certain tasks.
Google is catching up, not leading.
Yes, being surrounded by smart and motivated people is a huge bonus. But if your classmate doesn't even know fractions, it looks like you won't be getting that either.
There was nothing you couldn't have already learned from a book. Many professors were never even great at teaching and are employed for research.
Attending college as a student was always partly about status and once the standards of an institution drops so does the signal that comes from holding a degree. It is only natural that people will see college as less worthy of an investment.
We had an increasing cadence of releases for frontier models but got nothing in October. Opus 5.5 was released over a month ago and Fable has had no updates in a while, just sneak peeks of what they are achieving internally.
"Pacing the frontier" into a great depression. The safety maxxers will be the death of the field.
Don't get me wrong, I think we still need seniors who have engineering experience pre-AI and those with domain expertise. But the topic was entry level workers.
> If software students also take the time to master agentic development, the career opportunities opening up in large-scale orchestration of enterprise software creation will soon be immense, and carry the same high-salary dreams traditional software carried prior to a few months ago.
This is just based on nothing and is potentially really bad advice for young people.
>It has always struck me as absurd that America is so accessible to Chinese nationals.
This is what I was responding to. I'm trying to figure out how it is nonsense because India has a large population.
India already makes up like 70% of H1Bs.
Maybe monogamy is not natural for men?
China is high IQ. It is one of the top countries you will want to brain drain from.
There seems to be a direct correlation with how likely your game is to fail and how much virtue signalling is included.
Stepping outside and travelling really gives you a perspective on how much of a bubble online forums are.
Cultural stagnation can exist without technology but technology can also contribute to it.
If we had the exact same technology in the 80s would we have had all the classics we do now or just a remix of things previously created?
Hmmm so when CEOs use this excuse to fire devs it is bad but not for cutting out artists?
Protest - A protest is a public expression, statement, or act of strong objection, disapproval, or dissent against a policy, law, action, or idea.
Peaceful - Peaceful is an adjective meaning free from war, violence, conflict, or disturbance, as well as quiet, calm, and untroubled
Very few protests are truly "peaceful". There will always be a grey area with protests that make them controversial and difficult to manage while "peaceful protest" is usually used as a thought terminating term. Though riots are different and probably are made up of opportunists.
At the moment some people are in the bargaining phase trying to figure out how to stay employed and what their value is with AI and some people are in denialism phase which is becoming increasingly delusional. Others have already left software development for other corporate roles because they already accepted what is coming but I feel this is the minority voice online because they don't want to shake the beehive or want to get ahead of the curve themselves because it won't be nice when everyone tries to transition together.
The Overton window shifted on Israel, probably won't return to what you want it to anytime soon.
The job market is filled with fake jobs, 10 round interviews, AI screening and even AI interviewers. The degree has lost its signal, jobs get >100 applicants, hiring is broken and many are not interested in underemployment. Articles like this is why I am not surprised anti-establishment is on the rise. Blame literally anything apart from the problem.
Everyone is acutely aware these are performative gestures but there is still a sucker that ends up being taken advantage of.
Nice source. Transhumanism and believing in AI consciousness does not mix well. We are already being told how we should and shouldn't treat AI. Someone who wants to use AI to boost the abilities of people, puts people first and treats AI as a tool.
Recursive self-improvement, which is underway will crush anything that is verifiable. The only place people have for now is non-verifiable work which is harder to find in maths than other domains.
It is a largely romanticised idea that pops up here now and then. Meanwhile Anthropic just put up a post saying they are getting closer to replacing people in their own company. That's the objective.
I wonder how many mathematicians even truly understand any of the latest research which is only going to increase in output. It will be impossible to keep up unless you slow AI down (not happening).

> I'm ~50% percentile on strengthlevel.com
That's not the population. It is the average among other weightlifters which is where you would expect to be. Most of the population can't do a pull up.
>Some children are innately motivated to learn. Some are motivated so strongly you could give them a smartphone and watch them learn all they need to learn in life. But those children aren't the norm - they're the freaky 1 in 1000 outliers. And education has to work with everyone.
I worked as a teacher for a year. Children are innately motivated and curious (this is not just a cliche). If there was any laziness it usually stemmed from fear of not being good enough but they definitely all tried, even students that didn't know their 5 times table by age 10. Some students have greater self-perseverance than others though, some can't handle being wrong and fear being seen as less-then their peers. Others like to challenge themselves without such fear.
