Re:Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office on Monday October 26, 2026 @06:17PM (#50251901)
Um, all of the companies mentioned in this comment thread (with the exception of the original company mentioned, NeXT) received VC investment.

MBAs don't roll into startups to help get them off the ground. One of the good things about what YC has done to startup culture is remove the notion that engineers can't just run the company and do sales.

Re:Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model on Monday October 26, 2026 @06:11PM (#50251832)
This is basically the same as hiring a new person and giving them normal network access to get their job done. Did they upload a file to Beijing? Who knows?
You know, I searched this article for "China" and "India" (each of whom have over 60 Gigawatts of coal-fired power plants completing construction over the next 24 months) and found nothing.

The world needs to either decide that we will confront the developing world and tell them they cannot build power plants like we did (unlikely), or start figuring out how to ameliorate the effects of the warming.

It is fundamentally unserious for smaller-population rich countries to think they can cut their own emissions enough to make a dent, unless they plan to return their populations to the pre-electric age.

Re:Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France on Thursday October 22, 2026 @08:11PM (#50202867)
This is a Swiss company offering services to French users. Although Switzerland is not an EU member, it is a party to the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) and through this, the Swiss government would likely be required to help enforce French rulings against their companies.
Re:Jev Meets the Trolley Problem on Friday October 16, 2026 @06:17PM (#50125506)
I think the flaw of this is that it goes beyond the traditional Trolley Problem and adds in a self-preservation angle that isn't normally present. It would be like telling the human making the choice that the 1 person on the side track is their child.
Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:37PM (#50076496)
There's an argument to be made that progress on desktop personal computers has been faster because hackers (in the good sense) can hack around and invent new stuff in ways you really cannot on mobile/tablet locked-down hardware and software.

The commenter may have sounded unhinged but the thesis is sound.

Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:34PM (#50076437)
The average age for first phone in the US at least is now around 8.5yrs. The kids who are capable of independently deciding to call a friend or grandma already likely have a phone.

This device screams "we came up with use cases in a conference room committee meeting" not "we're solving one problem everyone has in a new way".

Re:Passkeys are a trap. Do not use them on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:13PM (#50061387)
Maybe I've had too much coffee and I'm impatient, but this kind of article bugs me. It has a tremendous amount of valuable detail but you don't learn why Passkeys are a trap until you've read like 2/3rds of it, and it's impenetrable to anyone who isn't a CS professional of some sort.

Add a TL;DR at the top perhaps.

Re:Why people don't want to have children any more on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:46PM (#50008199)
The Ancient Egyptians had condoms.
Re:Why people don't want to have children any more on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:45PM (#50008183)
There's also an interesting correlation between the advent of car seat / booster seat laws and the drop in number of kids per family.

You must be joking. Democratic Socialism is just Socialism with a prettier name. Socialism does not work, full stop, unless you're in the group at the top controlling the strings. Don't point at the nordic countries, they have far less progressive taxation policies that the US when you factor VAT in.
Re:Slack Code on Thursday August 20, 2026 @07:44PM (#49381827)
I like writing code too. What I don't like doing is debugging code that just isn't doing what I want. Debugging CSS layout issues in Safari vs Chrome vs Firefox? Screw that...agent do it. Debugging layout issues in a React Native mobile app on Android on that one weird screen layout phone? Screw that....agent do it.
Re:Grok 4.6 on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @03:03PM (#49277096)
Not unless you're here illegally. And it has nothing to do with skin color. Just the basic fact that a country not in control of its borders ceases to be a country.
Kalshi is a Delaware corporation.
Re:Mitchellh starts a new company: Superlogical on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @01:51PM (#49100727)
Easy to say this when the original commenter incorrectly described Tobias' comments. He suggested that those who pay more in taxes should have a greater say in how the government is spending the money. This is not a crazy idea on its face; you could say that taken to the limit it would not be a good system to live in (the highest taxpayer dictating what gov't does).

But it does make sense that those who are footing the bill for everything might be consulted a little on the plans to spend.

I kinda love that you misspelled 'gramma' when saying this model respects it a lot.

Maybe worth mentioning that the founding fathers in the US believed only property owners should vote.
Re:Apple Defeats Liability for Not Scanning iCloud for CSAM on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @01:45PM (#49010606)
This is simply untrue, there are no full auto handguns legally sold to the public. Semiautomatic yes. And yes, some guns are way too easy to convert to full auto.
I love that you wrote 6 paragraphs and linked to a medium post all without actually answering the question posed by the comment you replied to.
Re:The Humbling of the Once Almighty Dollar on Monday June 29, 2026 @02:49PM (#48723444)
Someone needs to make an inverse Krugman index like the one they did for Jim Cramer.

You could make an argument that the Yuan could be an alternative to USD as a mechanism of international payments, but you ignore the danger of working in a currency controlled by a country with no rule of law.

Krugman is so blinded by Trump hatred that he can't be objective. You dont have to be a MAGA person to see this post is terribly stilted.

Re:Older tech workers are tapping out early on Thursday June 25, 2026 @05:21PM (#48679367)
You assume they won't be able to find anyone to come in at junior, midcareer, or senior levels in a few years (when you say the field is going to "implode violently").

Hint: they will still be able to hire people if they need them.

Re:GLM-5.2 is the step change for open agents on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @07:53PM (#48666975)
Just don't ask it to tell you the events of June 4, 1989.
The 4th amendment doesn't apply to property of your employer. They can do pretty much whatever they want in terms of configuration, tracking, and auto-loading software on it.
And all of Apple's products are much more expensive in the EU. In Austria, a MacBook Air starts at EUR1199, and the same device starts at USD1099. At today's exchange rate, that European device costs USD1360, or nearly 20% more.

We can argue about the consumer friendliness of the regulations in the EU but they also add demonstrably to the cost of tech products (and likely other categories).

I would posit that many EU citizens are still living with the idea of their historic economic outperformance even though it has not been true for many years.
I dont get this at all...how does the administration or people within it get a "money pump" from headlines?
What bribery are you talking about?
You mean like when the Obama administration wasn't petty and didn't jail a journalist for not revealing sources on a story with no real importance and merit?

Every administration is made of people. People are petty. This is why the government should be as big as necessary and no bigger.

This does not restrict messaging platforms like iMessage, which are the first "social media" most kids really use, and on which they can be bullied, groomed, etc. Parents still need to involved.
Re:The 2-Year Apartment Rule on Thursday June 18, 2026 @02:07PM (#48589163)
I'm going to get flamed for this, but I think this is one less-focused-on benefit of buying a single family home. You're responsible for the maintenance but if you want to or have to do a retrofit or big appliance replacement (hvac, kitchen appliances) you get to keep them for as long as you want.

Yeah, it sucks that I had to replace my furnace months after buying my home, but I got to pick the replacement. Yes, I chose to replace single-pane glass windows from the early 1900s in my home with newer double-pane and pay for it. But it was my choice and totally under my control to make the house the way I wanted it.

Commence flames about how not everyone can afford to do this, but my point is that SFH living can be superior since it's all in your control.
