Milder winters could be good. Snow is nice but gets old very fast. No more plowing, smaller heating bills...
Interesting, this was 2014, perhaps clerk did it to save me money for device registration.

Now I just use my EU data plan, it has enough data for short stays.

Of course they will take your passport. First time I bought sim in store, it was illegal to use foreign phones, and shop owner had to fake his IMEI. Airports never had this restrictions or asked for IMEI.
Well, I am going to Turkey for couple of months this spring.
You have to buy sim at airport, there is an exception from this registration, it is easy.
First you buy a house and get established, then you start family. In Asian culture it is not even possible to get married without that.
I think that can be disabled, or encryption key exported for backup.

Anyway, it is stupid argument. It is like saying car does not need spare tire, because wheels are welded to save 10 ounces on bolts.

》The primary argument against soldering the SSD, or really any other part, down like this tends to be that "Oh, now you can't just save money by upgrading it yourself|replacing it when it breaks

Are you trolling? The primary argument is data recovery. Anything on laptop can die: charging port, motherboard... With soldered ssd your data are gone! You need to resolder SSD into exact same machine type, it may take 5 weeks if you are lucky!

It takes 5 minutes to swap normal SSD into new machine and reboot! Maybe 1 hour if you have to go into shop!

Most countries have real safety concerns and their weapons are VERY effective.

Java has only single dominant JVM, but in several flavours. It is doing fine.
Re:Ask HN: Can Firefox be revived? on Friday October 22, 2021 @04:02AM (#28954698)
Mozilla may pivot to VPN and network privacy stuff. But that won't save Firefox. I would rather have independent party on Chromium source, to balance large corporations, than half baked alternative engine.

Re:Don't give up on having kids because of climate change on Monday October 11, 2021 @09:12AM (#28827934)
Please.

Weather is a big issue. It is impossible to put kid into buggy/trolley in rain without it getting wet. 1 year old with pneumonia is a horrible thing. Add shopping in rain etc...

Bikes have horrible safety record on their own, even in "safe" bicycle infrastructure. Crashing into pole on bike and in car is a big difference. Common bike-buggies have zero protection for kids.

Re:Don't give up on having kids because of climate change on Monday October 11, 2021 @08:49AM (#28827741)
I think mother of 3 years old and 1 year old may have different opinion :)
Re:Don't give up on having kids because of climate change on Monday October 11, 2021 @08:42AM (#28827675)
I think it is more about rhetoric, fear mongering and climate "fight". My government wants to ban cars. Transporting kids on bike in rain, wind and 40 degree F is somehow good thing.
Re:An ex-FBI agent's guide to winning people over on Wednesday October 06, 2021 @03:03PM (#28776933)
You assume all people are well socialised and already understand non-verbal communication. Some people do not recognise different faces, let alone facial expressions. This sort of checklists are very helpfull.
WiFi on phone sends periodic pings to discover new access points. MAC is unique...
Or electricity price raises so much people will stop using it. There is already CO2 tax, polution tax. My country even collects TV license fee from electricity.

Rebuilding grid for solar and EVs requires major overhaul. That is not happening. In EU prices are already up by 50% and grid is becoming more unstable. When Germany switches off its remaining nuclear and coal power plants, it will sky rockets.

People will build off-grid solars to avoid fees, and government will make off-grid illegal or tax it severely.

Re:10 Year Smartphone on Friday September 24, 2021 @02:14PM (#28645937)
5G will still be here in 10 maybe even 20 years.
You can completely remove Google packages with ADB. There are tools for that.

I would be more concerned about vendor packages. For example stock weather widget uses GPS and pinks servers, even when not in use...

Re:Italy seeks to shield supercars from combustion engine ban on Saturday September 04, 2021 @04:37PM (#28418885)
This is crazy. Lightweight low emission cars are banned for strict limits, but supercars get exception?
In France it is illegal to have DNA paternity test, even in foreign country. I expect GoDaddy to take the same actions there and in other countries!
Re:The Complex Truth About ‘Junk DNA’ on Wednesday September 01, 2021 @03:05PM (#28384248)
It is not square area, but cubic area (mass).
Re:The Complex Truth About ‘Junk DNA’ on Wednesday September 01, 2021 @03:03PM (#28384224)
At uni we were told junk DNA is repository of new/old genes for evolution. Old unused proteins may get activated by mutation, and reporpused for new function.
Re:The Complex Truth About ‘Junk DNA’ on Wednesday September 01, 2021 @02:29PM (#28383802)
Not really. Smaller DNA means smaller surface, and less total accidents.
Re:I Have Decided to Stop Supporting My Family's Non-Linux Devices on Wednesday September 01, 2021 @07:58AM (#28378696)
But he DOES support them, but answer is usually "I will install linux".

Not everyone is Windows or MacOS expert. I do programming for 30 years. Las time I used Windows was 15 years ago. I never used Mac (maybe like 3 hours total).

My friend lost 1M in Cypriot bank. There are many stories about frozen assets.

If you have decent money, using single account/country is not just lazy, but stupid.

No!

Computers should have normal auditable log files, board schemes and spare parts. If it works right, it should be invisible. If it stops working, I call plumber who will fix it very cheaply.

This "computers are magic" is just BS. I refuse to "interact" with my thermostat. Soon this 6th sense will feed ads into my subconsciousness.

Re:Who Would Kidnap a Space Telescope? on Friday August 27, 2021 @07:45AM (#28326583)
USA has a navy, just send small destroyer for protection...

US navy started against pirates in 1820...

Asking for 30% or else, is kind of assholish. But quite reasonable for new job.
