News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Some active bugs on my github repo are 9 years old. Pretty common with long lived OS projects.
Re:Ukraine Conflict Live Map on Tuesday February 22, 2022 @12:55PM (#30431050)
Not really. Maidan would never happen if Ukraine had nukes.
Re:I have no capslock and I must scream on Monday February 21, 2022 @06:03PM (#30421905)
I use it for drop down terminal, pretty useful.
Yes, but if US ever finds out, it could get pretty nasty. US entry ban is pretty limiting career move for programmer.
Seems fair. I am EU citizen, can go to US visa free, but ESTA is required. It should be the same from the other side.

And US limits countries I can visit. Iran is great holiday destination, but after visit I would need US visa.

Re:Why Vladimir Putin and his entourage want war on Sunday February 20, 2022 @10:12AM (#30406294)
I read crazy theory conspiracy this is about destabilising EU and our energy policy. US can not put sanctions on closest allies directly (NS2), so there has to be war. Just crazy conspiracy theory though...
Or just install opensource ROM without this stuff.
Re:Why are young people having so little sex? (2018) on Friday February 18, 2022 @09:42AM (#30386268)
To enjoy sex, or to even have a sex drive, you have to be fit. Maybe it is obesity.
Well, bitcoin mining is not going to be here forever. It could be time limited thing.

And knowing Montana, it is difficult to get electricity connection there.

They recycled old power plant. That is a huge CO2 offset, building new plant would had huge emmisions.
》I was the only Hispanic faculty at my department, had 13k+ citations, 2 books, & papers in Nature, Science, & PNAS

Author complains about merit, but list his race BEFORE his credentials.

How exactly this is clever? Maybe on some toy, not on workstation!
Re:Cryptocurrencies – An Assessment by Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday February 16, 2022 @09:11AM (#30360139)
Blockchain does not make banking obsolete. We can already do business by moving raw currency around, but hardly anyone does that. There is a whole crypt banking sector that provides exchanges, custody, lending...

And if you take inflation overhead, consumed by miners and other services to keep BTC or ETH running (5% to 10% annually), there is not much advantage over existing banking.

Re:LibreOffice running natively in the browser via WebAssembly on Wednesday February 16, 2022 @01:06AM (#30356851)
Not from OS, it uses opensource library.
Re:Why introverts excelled at working from home on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @01:46PM (#30350873)
Person does not get the attention it needs, so it must mean other person is angry...
Re:Why introverts excelled at working from home on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @01:45PM (#30350849)
Is there something wrong about being small and insecure?

Extroverts are not uber or lesser, they are not even different, they are just people. My social obligation to my work colleagues ends at remembering their names! I do not even care if they are intro or extroverts.

Re:Ask HN: Should we own the free stuff we pay for? on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @07:37AM (#30345643)
And as always it will backfire on users!

Now it is impossible to find unlimited rentals, every contract has yearly extensions! In some countries landlords even rotate tenants every two years, else they would get extra rights from long stay.

Re:Why introverts excelled at working from home on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @07:31AM (#30345588)
Excelled? Maybe we are not miserable people who need constant support from others. We really do not care about your family situation or hobbies. It is easy to do productive work, when you do not have to be unpaid therapist for your work colleagues!
Re:Don't contribute anything relevant in web forums (2020) on Monday February 14, 2022 @04:15AM (#30329930)
I gave up on Web long time ago, too much shallow garbage. Books are much better.
NFT are really just used for tax evasion and money laundering, similar to physical art scene. There is not real NFT market!
I can use virtual server for many things (backup, vpn, webservices...) not just port forwarding.

Cost of my time for reading contract and learning new proprietary tool is not worth it for several years.

Cloudflare is arguably better from big tech. But cost of deployment some binary package on confidential server, keeping up with their marketing bs, etc is simply not worth it.

You can get virtual server for $4/month. Installing proprietary software and registering to some service, that may "upgrade" to premium tier anytime, is pretty off-putting.
Re:Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of Covid-19 on Monday February 07, 2022 @05:11PM (#30252075)
Bad genetics, not bad choices, it runs in family. I had gym, buddies and trainer to manage it.
Re:Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of Covid-19 on Monday February 07, 2022 @04:41PM (#30251681)
Mask is needed for the smog, that is why I want to run indoors at gym on threadmill. It also shields me from aggressive drivers and traffic.

Masks do not restrict oxygen flow, there are several studies to prove it! It is perfectly safe to wear double mask for entire day at work or at school!

I also like to do tough workouts inside, at gym! I do not have gear or space at home.

Re:Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of Covid-19 on Monday February 07, 2022 @04:20PM (#30251352)
Not everyone want to run with mask around dirty city block.

It is really interesting to see this mental gymnastics, if someone is fat, gets virus and dies, it is "the plague". But here we have dozen people talking about "personal responsibility".

Re:Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of Covid-19 on Monday February 07, 2022 @03:56PM (#30250998)
My own choice? I followed legally mandated lockdown. But I ensure you I learned my lesson!
Re:Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of Covid-19 on Monday February 07, 2022 @03:44PM (#30250808)
I got high cholesterol, and I am in risk of hearth attack. Never had covid, just poor health due to prolonged lockdowns and closed gyms.
Re:Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes on Saturday February 05, 2022 @08:26AM (#30220753)
Spotify paid N millions for Joe Rogan, they just deleted him. He can still do podcasting under his brand. Seems like win for him.
Re:Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes on Saturday February 05, 2022 @08:02AM (#30220577)
Monolithic platforms are dead. More and more creators will take lesson and put their content under their own brand. Youtbe will be just "dump host" embedded from other domain!
Re:The Biggest Mistake I See Engineers Make on Saturday February 05, 2022 @03:06AM (#30218897)
It is management failure, not engineering failure!
