If I recall, this is similar to how the US agreed to let China into the WTO back in ‘99.

Basically, China agreed to license CDMA from Qualcomm, despite already deploying GSM. Once China started paying, the US dropped its objections.

So I think it’s quite normal for politicians to advocate for their nation’s companies.
