10 years ago I totally get that but these days there's plugins built into every IDE that can smooth over the annoyances of testing an API via curl without having to invoke paying for Postman and dealing with all of its nonsense.
Of course now that I said that today I'd probably just have Claude hit the API for me, or build a dashboard to test it, I really don't know how Postman continues to exist.

Some Californians seem to think snow is fatal, but yes to all of these. I will acknowledge that SF has a pretty wonderful mix of city and nature but if I made a living out there I'd probably head to Spain/Portugal for a truly walkable city.
Re:The AI cost of JavaScript frameworks
on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:18AM (#50337150)
No, Next is a framework, React is a library. You could write React components in a web framework on a completely different stack if you wanted to, same with most JavaScript rendering libraries, which was my original issue with OPs comment, the bulk of JavaScript libraries noted in the article don't limit you at all.
Re:The AI cost of JavaScript frameworks
on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:51PM (#50329733)
It feels like you've invented some definition of a "framework" that no one else is using. Or why not go deeper and argue against libraries and APIs because they limit your design decisions.

This trend was started in health care by private equity with no inspiration from Uber. Check your local dentists, eye doctors, veterinarians, urgent cares, maybe even hospitals. You'll find very few that are not owned by some large private equity firm these days, who run everything at the highest margins possible. And once you eliminate any higher quality / higher paying positions in an area, moving to pricing on demand and getting rid of full time positions entirely comes next.

Internally written software does suck? NIH syndrome is always referenced as a warning not as an aspirational thing, even smaller companies need to focus on their business model not JavaScript frameworks.
That said, almost every JS framework degrades to... a browser, do whatever you want, I find it hard to believe any have actually limited your ability to accomplish something unless it was truly beyond the ability of a web browser.

I still think OpenAI holds on as a Google competitor and Anthropic does fine as a business tool. Do they match their outsized spending with future growth? Well, that I'm not very confident about. A lot of this really comes down to what is the business model of integrating AI with 3rd party systems and I don't see that anyone has truly cracked that yet.

Previously it was every company that made a device, before that any company with a text-heavy app like a Word Processor. I think if you stare at fonts long enough and have a design team you eventually make your own.

Sure, but EVs also often have cooling loops that need service, your same cabin air filters, and more frequent tire and brake service due to heavier weights.

Innovation is rare among the broad consumer car market but modify to fit new bodies and motor layouts, yes, for sure. For most mainstream cars however you'll often find that a few models per generation for any given manufacturer either share parts or are interchangeable.

While I've occasionally had an engine part fail most of the major repairs I've needed to do to cars over the years has been suspension related, it's consistently abused and closest to the road / debris.
That said... many of the different EVs sit on the same base, so maybe it won't actually be as hard to get parts as it seems.

Once upon a time I did root cause analysis professionally, and a trainer told us if you attributed the root cause to people without finding malice you were just being lazy. At the very least I doubt anyone to blame here was actually involved in the accident, but someone who decided it was not in the budget to put an automated system in place faster.

Re:Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible
on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:13AM (#50259716)
Yes, absolutely. I don't recall Winamp ever crashing on me (maybe after they introduced frame-breaking skins), meanwhile Apple Music needs to be restarted at least once a day. At the same time my local music server has been up for months without an issue. It's not really an issue of quality it's an issue of inconsistency with network state, which a lot of apps seems to want to make even worse by now passing their networked state to another AI process.

View them as a successful SAAS company deeply embedded in tech company processes like Atlassian. I don't see Anthropic or SpaceX actually having a market on all the software in the universe but I don't know that the market won't buy them like they do.
Re:OLED iPad Mini
on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:47AM (#50244690)
It's still very strange how much work goes into the materials for the case and the ergonomics and weight of holding the devices without a case just to assume everyone will put it in a case. I'm with you on iPads, they get too heavy/thick for their primary uses once in a case. The phones I sort of get but I still think it ruins a lot of the aesthetic choices they make about the case design.

It's not really devil's advocate, it's the way Capitalism should be structured. If we had government covered health care I'd expect private markets of vanity surgery or uncovered procedures to still exist. If we had government run utilities you'd still have private installments for demanding needs, generators, off-grid construction, etc, etc.

Pre-internet there was no way to hear about things "all the time". If someone released a product and a competitor came about it would be months, if not years, before the product existed and the marketing cycle made it to trade magazines.
Now every day there are 200 links to 200 new AI tools. The internet already made the signal:noise ratio tough, with AI it's getting cranked to wondering if there even is a signal among the infinite noise.

Glad to see we can keep the "every developer eventually builds a CMS" joke running for another two decades. I still think it's a bad idea to build your own, and I wouldn't put Drupal or Wordpress near the top of the pile for good ones anyway, but I'd still put them above any bespoke CMS I've ever seen.

Well, yes and no. Consider the upcoming Grand Theft Auto, it will require a Rockstar login and have some amount of online only multiplayer content, so sure AI could likely get around the login and reverse engineer the multiplayer servers, maybe, but for the majority of games that's not going to happen.

I would bet most PlayStation owners play online games and subscribe to PlayStation+ so I don't think you're describing a future state here so much as the current one.

Fashion is a weird analogy because I can get stuff even from well known designers from places like Uniqlo with no logos on them. A better example is cars, where people are often happy to show off their status symbol logos, and will buy other things that go along with their car.
Re:Amazon blocks Meta’s new Muse AI agent from shopping on amazon.com
on Monday September 21, 2026 @02:12PM (#49791064)
This is already solved by the existence of hundreds of other stores that actually do some level of filtering and curation of products. I don't know why we want to play some cat and mouse game of getting an LLM to find the best toilet paper on Amazon versus just finding a reliable source of toilet paper to begin with.
