Re:Nobody Gets Promoted for Simplicity on Wednesday March 04, 2026 @01:11AM (#47243764)
I’m here to support both of your statements. This is absolutely true from orgs the size of FAANG to startups because I’ve worked at both. Sure smooth talkers get promoted but so do smart people who make things work better by simplifying.
Normally I’d help a bro out but I started and googled and got hundreds of results and realized why does everyone need to be spoon fed. Please go do some work yourself mkay?
Have you noticed half the internet doesn’t work if you use a vpn? Even a good vpn? Even HN wont let you create an account with a vpn. The friction applied to preventing people from deploying privacy tactics is intense. I’m not sure how we can practically resist the privacy enshittification without abandoning the internet and its convenience entirely. I’m ready to go back to paper statements and visiting my bank and writing paper checks, but I don’t think GenZ is.
Yes. Numpy will accelerate if it detects hardware that it supports.
Agreed. Now is our chance to start pushing back on this. Don’t patronize this. Just glad author admitted it. Next time they won’t tho.
Re:Welcome (Back) to Macintosh on Monday March 02, 2026 @05:24PM (#47225046)
This is what worries me. I’ve used Time Machine for almost 20 years and it has provided seamless transitions to new MacBooks. But how do I know if it is currently borked?
Re:Apple introduces the new iPad Air, powered by M4 on Monday March 02, 2026 @02:15PM (#47222670)
In the 1990s we referred to this dilemma as needing a “killer app” to drive an upgrade. Fortunately everything needed more mips, but unless you’re a niche gamer, consumers hit the wall in maybe 2010. Which is why every oem is pushing Ai. Sell moar !! Fill the landfills !!!
Re:Jolla phone – a full-stack European alternative on Monday March 02, 2026 @06:55AM (#47216857)
This is the third phone on the HN main page. I’m happy to see this flurry of work at real competition in the market, but I hope the companies can survive and respond to CSVEs.
It’s the trump admin. They don’t care about the decorum you’ve described. They would have no qualms about looking racist. Have you not seen what ICE has been doing? Racism is a badge of honor, and so is flipping off the courts and public opinion. No I believe this is simply paranoia and racism driven by Miller and his cronies.
Welcome to reality. HN likes to pretend politics is something you can just look away from and ignore. That’s a mighty big privilege, which makes sense since HN skews cis-white-het-male. That’s not a lie. It is easy to ignore this when it doesn’t touch them. But now it DOES touch them, and you’ve just discovered what every oppressed group in history has to live with: politics doesn’t just go away if you ignore it.
Cancel culture and derangement syndrome. This admin is garbage.
Re:80386 Protection on Friday February 27, 2026 @02:36AM (#47177685)
It used segmented 32-bit mode. Flat mode doesn’t support virtual addressing which was accomplished with the descriptor tables (and the ES register) if I recall correctly. lol it’s been 33 years since I wrote windows drivers. Had to use masm to compile the 16-bit segments to thunk to the kernel
I think it was “you lie” under Obama. But my history knowledge awful. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a duel at a pre civil war sotu.
I’ve been called bad things on HN for suggesting there’s even a whiff of corruption in this administration. That alone scares me. Deeply.
Even if they can rewrite the MAC and force a new one via ping, which are usually already disabled, they still can’t eavesdrop on the TLS key exchange. I fail to see how this is a risk to HTTPS traffic? It’s a mitm sure but it is watching encrypted traffic.

You just labeled me as a bad person. Lol. Try again.
Re:What are the best coping mechanisms for AI Fatalism? on Wednesday February 25, 2026 @09:45AM (#47152202)
Ah yes. Whattaboutism. Awesome. Tell me again the political leanings of the billionaire class? Tell me again who is fighting them? Facts speak for themselves but go ahead and make shit up to defend the right wing.
Re:What are the best coping mechanisms for AI Fatalism? on Wednesday February 25, 2026 @09:36AM (#47152076)
Up is down. Black is white. Dogs are cats. Sound logic, troll.
Re:What are the best coping mechanisms for AI Fatalism? on Wednesday February 25, 2026 @09:35AM (#47152058)
Don’t ban it. Regulate the shit out of it and keep it in academia and prevent it from toppling our economy by sucking up all investment. It’s worse than private equity right now.
Re:What are the best coping mechanisms for AI Fatalism? on Wednesday February 25, 2026 @09:33AM (#47152024)
Nobody is forcing AI on us? How can you be on HN and even make that claim? It’s literally everywhere.
Re:What are the best coping mechanisms for AI Fatalism? on Wednesday February 25, 2026 @09:29AM (#47151958)
Vote for progressive democrats. All of this AI is a choice. We don’t have to let it be forced on us by the parasite billionaire class.

If you’ve never heard it, his duet of the song Common People is pretty awesome:

You are 100% correct. I find the attitude that everything should be free a bit tedious. But then again, why does the truth have to be paywalled while lies are free. I believe it is a detriment to society that we cannot publicly find reporting. Yes I know now come the cynics who will argue bias. But that’s just a failure of reading comprehension, not fair reporting doctrine.

So yes. I’m with you 100%.
