Re:The SEC Should Block Anthropic's IPO to Protect the Public on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:38PM (#50345792)
Yes. There are too many people entire retirements on the line to hide behind the usual song and dance people do around this. What's the alternative. Let them proceed, the bubble burst, tank the market, then have the poorest and least equipped people to manage a recession just suffer? This is exactly what a government for the people could do. Or we could just keep letting rich assholes destroy everything with no consequences.
It's not public. It's private. Let's be super annoying about it and argue semantics. Really helps the discussion.
No. They are a private enterprise that does ages checks. It is totally fine for consenting adults to go in a room and watch porn together.
Under no circumstances is it ok to show porn in a public setting. I say this as someone who very much enjoys porn.
Incorrect. There is no person a diet and exercise won't work for. You can not run a caloric deficit and gain weight. The laws of physics apply here.
If you are in a place where you truly can't control your habits then of course GLP-1s are an amazing tool. However, if you don't adjust your life-style you will relapse when you get off, so the real solution is to adjust your life style. Also, there are benefits to exercise that aren't connected to losing weight. In my experience, 100% of the people I know on GLP-1 drugs are not exercising. I'm sure I'll get 1000 responses of people who do, but in my experience they don't. So you put yourself in a position where you're not addressing the actual problem, you are on a drug for life, and you aren't being healthy in other capacities. Are there times where these drugs make sense? Yes. Of course. Spare me the lecture. Everyone I know on these drugs are middle class people who absolutely could be healthy but don't want to put in any work.
I've never ever heard anyone say diet and exercise don't work. Is this something a real person has said to you in real life? Not on the internet?
Very rare to see such visual beauty in math like this. Well done.
Does something like sun lamps or vitamin D supplements help?
Re:Upcoming Critical PHP Security Release on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @07:45AM (#50179296)
We just turned off uploads like they suggested to do. Our decision isn't "to let random hackers all over [our] server".
Two things can be true. Deepseek is a great model doing great things for democratizing AI and the federal government should never use a Chinese model for anything serious or sensitive, China will have access to literally everything. And before anyone gets upset over that, China would be crazy to use American models for anything sensitive because you have to assume the US government could access it. It goes both ways.
Re:Facebook now charging to post more than 2 links a month on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @11:57AM (#50168338)
Society basically says money = good. God forbid we treat a sex worker with respect but if you're precious little Johnny works at Facebook finding new and exciting ways to get teenagers even more addicted to their phones it's all good because he makes a lot of money and money = good.
No, it is not obvious, especially to anyone who lives in a rural area. There is a type of smooth-brained reactionary person who will buy the biggest gas-guzzling truck he can find just because you told him not to.
Woah woah woah, lets not bring molly into this. The greatest drug on the planet has nothing to do with new-age nonsense. Nitrous on the other hand...
I literally picked up Cat's Cradle for first time in decades this weekend. Funny how these things line up.
Re:Show HN: Gemini 4 Argon plays StarCraft on Friday October 16, 2026 @11:44AM (#50119838)
There is currently an AI bot playing on the ladder in Korea and essentially it will nearly always win because it can micro every unit individually across the entire map. If a normal human can max out at hundreds of actions per minute, the bot can do thousands. Broodwar is so insanely difficult mechanically that there is no way for humans to compete. I imagine in a few months, maybe a year, it will be completely unbeatable.
Was no technology created before capitalism? I once heard someone say it's easier for some people to imagine the end of the world before imagining the end of capitalism.
Re:How the Military Will Hack the Election on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @03:36PM (#50093761)
You're scenario 1 is wrong. He has literally said every election he's been in has been rigged, even the ones he won.
Re:Breaking Bad star RJ Mitte dies aged 34 on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:04PM (#50064786)
Fuck that other person. I'm sorry you have to deal with idiots like that here.

I can't imagine what you're going through but just know that you matter and that the world is a better place with you in it. I hope you are doing better and you get the help you need.

Of course. But we might have found out the sun is the center of the solar system much sooner. Who knows!

I feel like there's a lot of "humans are special" in this thread. There's a good chance we're not.

Do we even need one?
Re:The US state replacing power plants with home batteries on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @07:35PM (#49915848)
I don't understand. You asked for a source and I provided one. Arguing in bad faith and moving the goal posts. This conversation is over.
Re:The US state replacing power plants with home batteries on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @02:30PM (#49912575)
It's in the article. Give it a read.
Re:The US state replacing power plants with home batteries on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @07:47AM (#49907539)
I don't understand comments like this. This isn't theoretical. This already exists in reality. It is reducing demand at peak times. It is preventing outages in rural areas during/after storms. It is so successful they are closing down power plants. I'm guessing you don't like solar/batteries for some reason? I don't know. This comment confuses me.
We can't address concerns if they aren't based in reality.

"the unhoused man in a fit of rage yelling at passers-by is never filed with the police"

Good. That's not a crime.

Good news! They aren't filled with used heroin needles today as well!
Let us also acknowledged that we're living in the safest time in history and modern American cities are extremely safe, despite the unhinged propaganda from the right.
It's also the economy. Everything is expensive. Young people are less successful than ever before (at no fault of their own). When it costs $10 a beer with tax and tip, most young people simply can't afford to do that with any regularity.

It's also also competition. In 1970, your option was to stay home and watch one of three TV channels and that's it. Now, your options are literally to watch any movie ever made, watch any TV show ever made, or play any game ever made... all connected with your friends online.

It is a part of it, but it's not just weed. I would argue the economy is the most impactful factor here.

Re:Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah on Monday September 28, 2026 @07:35PM (#49885946)
If you had to guess, what do you think they might do? I feel like questions like this are in bad faith. Think about it for a minute, and try to come up with some things that they might do.
How can you compare the economics of it if you just have the bandwidth and not the cost?
