Re:Chromium Has Merged JpegXL on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @01:26PM (#46605416)
It's been 3 years, I might have people mixed up, but that was the justification at the time.
Re:Chromium Has Merged JpegXL on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @09:58AM (#46601829)
If you look at the issue tracker, the creator of Webp killed it because of untrue claims there was no interest or advantages over existing formats.

Concerns about the implementation only came up after years of pushback forced google ton reconsider.

Re:Django: What's new in 6.0 – Adam Johnson on Wednesday December 10, 2025 @12:30AM (#46214414)
With that logic, the Django orm should only support one database.
Re:Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros on Friday December 05, 2025 @11:55AM (#46163895)
HBO owns Westworld and stopped streaming it to avoid paying residuals.
Gracefully handling hardware faults is a software problem. The Air France Flight 447 crash was the result of bad software and bad hardware.
Re:Bring Bathroom Doors Back to Hotels on Wednesday November 26, 2025 @11:45PM (#46065753)
I'm very surprised that you find this surprising. Do you mostly stay at Airbnb? I expect this at any traditional hotel in the US.
How is this relevant to just Mac users?
That project is a pipe dream. They don't have what it takes to continue X11 alive once X.Org pulls the plug.
Why go through the trouble of exploring such a bug, when you have the ability to just replace the binary with something with a backdoor?

AI Slop.
Re:Ask HN: Sites that don't zoom – why? how? workarounds? on Saturday October 18, 2025 @12:32AM (#45624915)
It would be easier to ask google than post here. It's the first google result for "blocking website scaling"

Changing your user agent won't help. No half decent web developer has cared about since the 2000s.

Re:How I bypassed Amazon's Kindle web DRM on Thursday October 16, 2025 @06:53PM (#45611658)
Most Kobo books have DRM. There are a few publishers (TOR) and authors that are DRM free, but most of books I've wanted have it.

This is why I have a Boox Android eInk tablet, although I only use it with burner accounts. They run Ancient versions of Android.

Re:TiVo Stops Selling DVRs on Wednesday October 15, 2025 @12:50PM (#45595335)
Did I just wake up from a time loop?
Launching under AGPL was the kiss of death. They eventually went MIT, but the developers it steered away, probably never gave it a second chance
Re:OpenZL: An Open Source Format-Aware Compression Framework on Tuesday October 07, 2025 @12:15AM (#45499333)
Wasm can be sandboxed. Its a safe as visiting a website with javascript.
Re:AVIF updates: performance notes and when it wins on Saturday September 27, 2025 @12:43AM (#45393255)
Google blocking jpegxl from Chrome is tragic.

AVIF is only better when quality is less important than saving bandwidth. AVIF is also significantly less capable.

What's the legitimate use case for a 1U rack with 32 cell modems (Assuming 1 modem for every antenna in the photos)?
Re:WASM 3.0 Completed on Wednesday September 17, 2025 @03:42PM (#45280515)
Wasm is one of the best solutions for running untrusted code. Alternative are more complicated or have limited language choices.
Re:Is OOXML Artifically Complex? on Monday September 08, 2025 @09:10PM (#45176209)
It's as complex as it needs to be to losslessly convert old binary office files.

A better format would have made us geeks a lot happier, but the average user just wants things to work the way they always have.

I've had both and am much happier with Ecobee.
Re:Bear is now source-available on Monday September 01, 2025 @01:38PM (#45094832)
MIT & BSD don't include a patent grant, that's a good reason to go with the Apache license.
Unfortunately some cultures value quantity over quality and they drove medium into the ground long before LLMs were a thing.
Re:Kitten TTS: 25MB CPU-Only, Open-Source Voice Model on Wednesday August 06, 2025 @01:25PM (#44814947)
I've seen people use IPC to workaround the GPL, but I've also seen the FSF interpretations claiming that is still a derived work.

I don't know if this has ever been tested in court.

This means nothing without information on the group requesting the exemption.
We need to eliminate overtime exceptions.
Have is a nice language, but it doesn't live up to it's promises.

It's really cool that it can compile itself to a bunch of different languages, but the API isn't consistent enough for complex applications to work with all of its backends.

Direct Rendering Manager doesn't predate the concept of digital rights management, but it might predate the widespread usage of the acronym.

From I remember, back int the 90's, "copy protection", was the common term in use.

Re:How fast are Linux pipes anyway? on Sunday June 22, 2025 @09:55PM (#44351861)
What are Doors, it's too common a word to Google.
Re:Lossless video compression using Bloom filters on Tuesday May 27, 2025 @03:10PM (#44109843)
Losssy compression is standard on high end cinema cameras.

In most cases the compression ratio will be low enough that the video will be perceptually lossless.
