I used to be a fan, it entirely ruined CBT for me - you can only gaslight yourself so well into ignoring emotional compass and I think I maxed it out before encountering CBT approach.

The fabula of "Dune" was heavily inspired by the historical novel "The Sabres of Paradise" by Lesley Blanch about these events.
Re:Ask HN: What do y'all make of Netflix's 3 Body problem? on Tuesday March 26, 2024 @04:22AM (#39825325)
I felt like there's some base plot that is solid and holding it together, but all the intermediate filling was tasteless. Then I noticed the part: "From creators of the Game of Thrones"
like hobbits drinking ent water

Is that why they sent Scott Kelly for a year up there and then compared him to his twin?
Stormgate looks like it was developed a decade before SC2, not a decade after
On the “suffix” side there was EDB -> rebranded EDB -> EDBErgoGroup -> Evry in several years. Also changed hands following a loss of major customer in 2015 before being merged with Tieto
“Only opposition party” is a fundamentally fascist way of seeing things.
Was the recent change to legislation which made only 3 years of residence enough to apply for citizenship a trigger for this? In most countries it’s 5-10 years
With extra sauce of numerous mergers and rebrandings. So, every 3 to 7 years, this phoenix of shit is reborn

Look at the bright side, prison time can be an investment
Re:Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2024? on Thursday December 28, 2023 @05:04AM (#38791874)
AFAIK there is quite widespread consensus that WW1 and WW2 are the same conflict with a break. To be fair, they took ~100 years of nation-building and conflicts brewing after Napoleonic wars to get to that point.

I think public discourse on social media is close to being ruined by bots. Petitions which require id to authenticate might be a better measure, although has it's flaws for sure.
updated uBlock origin, and it started working

IDK how people feel about him on average, but for me one thing more irritating than Seligman's work is not being able to pinpoint where exactly this irritation comes from.
Re:Sam Altman returns as CEO, OpenAI has a new initial board on Thursday November 30, 2023 @06:43AM (#38472320)
I believe it's not possible to keep such thing a secret, so this reason as a main motivation for board actions sounds kind of weak to me

Re:Ask HN: Best monitor for a MacBook Pro for ~US$700? on Thursday November 23, 2023 @07:58AM (#38392259)
Careful with Dells, their USB-C support for Macs have been historically horrible. I have one, there are sleep/wake issues, as well as USB accessories connectivity problems. Their website is full of complaints, but they don't seem to care.

IMO in terms of achievement and impact Musk is an Einstein-caliber historical figure, and we have to treat what he says and does very carefully. That's why anyone who follows him must always remember that road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Trying to have a balanced view as well, but I have a strong intuition it will get much worse with Elon

I cannot get used to American custom of advertising gross and charging net prices. It's 24.20 and would be nice to discuss it as such
this and capability to launch ICBMs that return the launchers!
That's a weird website
Hating ads in general, it's logical to hate them succeed even more. It's the positive feedback loop that leads to force-fed dystopia IMO. It's a temporary remedy, but I do "bad actor" behavior, once I get shown a good and relevant ad, I am banning the source and interact with the irrelevant ones instead.
2.1 children per woman is the fertility rate for population reproduction. It is scary to me to think how much needs to change in the developed world that the 3-children household becomes the norm.
I kind of agree with the parent comment that it was stupid on my behalf, but I paid _another_ company to give me medical results from 23AndMe data.

And guess what, they got bought by MyHeritage
